I haven’t found any truly outstanding contributions in the attenuated in the last half of careers. MEDIA CLIPS – July 18, 2017 Rox seek 3rd straight win in Senzatela's return By Max Gelman / MLB.com | 9:36 AM ET Antonio Senzatela's demotion to Triple-A Albuquerque was short-lived, as the young right-hander will make his return for the Rockies on Tuesday to start against the Padres and Dinelson Lamet. Colorado has won back-to-back games for the first time since a six-game streak from June 14-20. Senzatela will be making his first MLB start since June 22 when he gave up nine runs in five innings to the D-backs. He made two relief appearances following that outing and was then optioned to Albuquerque for a start. He threw 3 1/3 innings for the Isotopes on July 13 and gave up one run on four hits. While in the bullpen, Senzatela's fastball velocity jumped. His fastball averaged 94 mph in June, but in relief, it averaged 95.3 mph. "I got to see the game from a different view," Senzatela said of his relief outings. "It taught me to go in, be more aggressive and finish the hitter real quick. I worked quick, and I felt good. I looked to get out there hitter in two or three pitches -- dominate." For the Padres, Lamet will make his first career start against the Rockies. The young righty has a 5.93 ERA in 41 innings. 1 It's been all or nothing for Lamet through his first eight big league starts. The rookie has a legit three-pitch mix, and all three project as Major League-caliber out pitches.

San Diego is still looking for a replacement for hitting coach Alan Zinter, who was let go in September. Meanwhile, infielders coach Ramon Vazquez will not return either, leaving one further vacancy on manager Andy Green's staff. The news means bench coach Mark McGwire, pitching coach Darren Balsley, third-base coach Glenn Hoffman and first-base coach Johnny Washington are all expected to return next season, though the club has not formally announced as much. Vazquez, who played three seasons for the Padres as an infielder from 2002-04, spent one season on Green's staff. Meanwhile, the Padres' search for a hitting coach continues. The club already has interviewed five candidates -- including Red Sox hitting coach Chili Davis on Wednesday. How Baseball’s Arm Whisperer Fixes Broken Pitchers Ivan Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pittsburgh Pirates under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage. By: Jared Diamond- The Wall Street Journal Pittsburgh In today’s data-driven, power-centric version of baseball, starting pitchers tend to follow a similar formula: They throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, racking up strikeouts until they reach the 100-pitch mark, usually around the sixth inning or so. The days of one man owning the mound for 27 outs ended long ago. But it seems Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova never received that message. Upon arriving here in a trade with the New York Yankees last August, he has emerged as the ultimate throwback, dominating opposing lineups in a manner hardly seen for decades. In his first 15 outings for Pittsburgh, Nova completed four, more than anyone else during that span. Even more improbable, in 91 2/3 innings of work, he has issued just four total walks. That means when Nova pitches, he is equally likely to go the distance as he is to miss the strike zone four times to a given batter. “A lot of guys like to strike out everybody,” said Nova, who is scheduled to start Saturday night in Miami. “I like seeing all those ground balls and quick outs. It makes me more happy than getting 10 strikeouts.” Nova’s unexpected resurgence marks yet another successful reclamation project for the Pirates, who, under the tutelage of pitching coach Ray Searage, have reached the playoffs in three of the past four years.
