Lookouts one win from title Staff Report | Times Free Press | September 9, 2017

The Chattanooga Lookouts are coming home in need of one more win — with two chances to get it — to earn a share of the Southern League title.

T.J. White homered and Felix Jorge allowed just three hits in six innings as the Lookouts beat the Montgomery Biscuits 2-0 Friday night at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium in the North Division championship series.

Chattanooga leads the best-of-five series 2-1 entering tonight's game at AT&T Field, where the first pitch is set for 7:15. If necessary, a decisive fifth game would be played at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, also at AT&T.

Jorge got the better end of a duel with Montgomery starter Genesis Cabrera, who scattered five hits in as many innings but gave up a two- run homer to White in the fourth. Jonathan Rodriguez singled with one out, and White followed with his drive to left field.

Chattanooga had runners on first and second in the third, but Cabrera got a pair of flyouts to end that threat. The Lookouts had two on with two outs in the fifth, but Cabrera escaped with a strikeout.

Jorge struck out four and walked one before yielding to Todd Van Steensel, who struck out three and was perfect in two innings. Gabriel Moya hit a batter with one out but then got a popout and strikeout to earn his second save of the series.

The Southern League announced Wednesday that the league championship series would not be played next week because of the threat of Hurricane Irma, and that the division series winners would be crowned co-champions.

The South Division series involves two Florida teams, and Pensacola finished a sweep of Jacksonville with a 5-4 win in 12 innings Friday night.

Chattanooga Lookouts Shutout Montgomery Biscuits Friday, 2-0 The Chattanoogan | September 9, 2017

Felix Jorge allowed just three hits over six innings, leading the Chattanooga Lookouts over the Montgomery Biscuits in a 2-0 win on Friday.

Felix Jorge returned to the Lookouts and he worked six scoreless innings. He gave up just three hits, walked one and struck out four to earn the win. Todd Van Steensel threw two scoreless innings, striking out three batters.

The only score of the game came in the fourth inning when T.J. White hit a two-run home run.

Genesis Cabrera (5-5) went five innings, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out four in the Southern League game.

The Biscuits were held off the scoreboard for the fifth time this season, while the Lookouts' staff recorded their 16th shutout of the year.

Gabriel Moya struck Nick Ciuffo out with a runner on first to end the game for his 26th save of the season.

Chattanooga improved to 22-6 against Montgomery this season.

The Lookouts hope to bring the 2017 season to a joyful ending on Saturday night at AT&T Field with a championship-clinching victory.

E-Twins win Appy League-record 11th title Kelsie Heneghan | MILB.com | September 9, 2017

Drenched in ice water in what felt like 40-degree weather, Ray Smith was admittedly freezing. On the inside, however, he was burning up.

The veteran manager guided Elizabethton to an 8-7 win over Pulaski, a sweep of the best-of-3 Finals and the Twins' 11th Appalachian League championship on Friday at Calfee Park.

"It doesn't matter if you're playing in a rec league softball game or playing in the World Series, hopefully you got that [drive] within you that allows you to have some butterflies," he said. "And I want that. It gives you an edge. So yeah, I'm fired up."

Twins left fielder Mark Contreras picked up where he left off in the series opener as he homered in his second straight game. The ninth-round pick in this year's Draft went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

"Mark came alive," Smith said. "We got a couple guys on and Mark hit -- it was very well-directed. … He hit it 261 [feet], so it was just enough to go out and it did give us the momentum. And we were able to maintain the momentum."

Including Contreras, Smith was pleased with how the bottom of the lineup contributed, especially with big bats Andrew Bechtold and Colton Waltner on the disabled list. No. 8 hitter Carson Crites knocked an RBI double and T.J. Dixon registered two hits and an RBI out of the ninth spot.

"The bottom of the order, they did some damage for us, so without their offensive help and their defensive ability, we would have no chance," the manager said. "So they played both sides of the ball very well for us and we're very fortunate to have these guys in our organization."

Although Elizabethton had the lead from the second inning on, Pulaski made it close with a four-run seventh as Jesus Bastidas and Eric Wagaman hit back-to-back homers that prompted Smith to bring in his closer early.

Jovani Moran retired all seven batters he faced, striking out four, to notch his second postseason save.

"He's been pretty good for us. I had to go to him just a little bit early, but that's all we have," Smith said, referring to more injured players. "If we have a lead in the eighth, Moran is going to get the ball."

The Twins hoisted the trophy for the league-record 11th time. It's Elizabethton's first championship since 2012 and the eighth during Smith's 31-year tenure.

Twins take Appy League title with 8-7 win over Pulaski Yankees Staff | The Roanoke Times | September 9, 2017

The Elizabethton Twins had an unusually long division series in the Appalachian League playoffs.

The championship round didn’t take nearly as long.

The Twins scored three runs in both the second and third innings, then added two more in the fourth.

That was enough to claim the league championship, as they held on to top the Pulaski Yankees 8-7 on Friday at Calfee Park to sweep the best- of-three series.

The Twins did their damage with extra-base hits. In the second inning, the runs came with the help of a Carson Crites double and Akil Baddoo triple.

In the third, Mark Contreras hit a three-run home run.

Baddoo added another double in the fourth.

The Yankees, who lost the first series game 12-1, made a contest of it when both Jesus Bastidas and Eric Wagaman hit back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh inning with one out. That was followed by a Ricky Surum double. In all, the Yankees scored four times to make it 8- 7.

But in the last two innings, Pulaski went six up, six down.

Moises Gomez got the win for Elizabethton. He went five innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out six.

Jovani Moran got the last seven outs and the save for the Twins.

Losing pitcher Luis Medina was dinged for all eight Elizabethton runs. Six of those were earned. Five other Yankees pitchers managed to keep their team in the game, allowing just one hit over the last six innings.

Evan Alexander had three hits for the Yankees.

Pulaski drew a crowd of 1,164 fans for what turned out to be the final game of the season.
