FARM AID ARTISTS Since 1985, Farm Aid concerts have brought together the greatest artists in American music. Of all the concerts for a cause that began in the mid- 80s, Farm Aid remains the only one that has the unique and unwavering commitment of its original founders. Nearly 500 artists have played on the Farm Aid stage to keep family farmers on the land and inspire people to choose family farm food. Texas songwriters such as Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Nanci Griffith have written songs on their own terms rather than shape their art to fit the demands of Nashville, New York, or Los Angeles. Outside the mainstream of country or popular music, this unique community of artists is a wellspring of originality and creativity. This course allows you not only to study that group, but also to join it as songwriters yourselves. The course will follow two primary tracks. The first will involve analysis and study of songs by Texas songwriters. The second track will work like a creative writing workshop with students writing songs and critiquing each other's songs. The objectives of the class are to • analyze and do close readings of songs; • find and use credible sources for academic research; • learn the tools that songwriters use to craft songs; and • write and revise two original songs. Researchers must receive prior written permission from the Mayor Family for any reproductions of use. Center staff are able to assist with copyright questions for this material. Provenance and Acquisition Information: This collection was donated by Alan Mayor’s sister, Theresa Mayor Smith, in October 2017. The Center’s Director and Archivist picked up a portion of the collection on October 6, 2017 from Mrs. Smith’s storage unit in Cadiz, Kentucky. The second, and largest, portion was picked up by the Center’s Archivist and Assistant Archivist on October 13, 2017 from Cadiz, Kentucky. The third batch of remanding binders of negatives was dropped off at the Center by Mrs. Smith on November 9, 2017. It was a frantic last couple of weeks and it was great to see so many special friends and supporters during that period. Fear not though, we will be continuing and expanding our mail order business. It will mean greater coverage and greater frequency of newsletters, which I can appreciate, is the only means many have of finding out about the wonderful music we carry. You can reach us 7 days a week. If I am out there is an answering machine and I will get back to you with the greatest of speed. This newsletter is largely devoted to sale items. Regular postage is 1 cd $2/ 2cds $3/ 3-4 cds $6 1 dvd $2/ 2-3 dvds $6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fayssoux – “Early” $28 Emmylou Harris fans, and there are one or two, may recognise the name as when she was married to prominent bluegrass/country man John Starling she was featured on several Emmylou Harris albums, most notably “Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town” where she even sang a duet with Emmy on “Green Rolling Hills”. She dropped out of the music biz as her marriage to Starling broke up and was rediscovered by accident by Nashville Writer and fellow Red Beet Records artis, Peter Cooper, who also does a fine job as producer.

Repository: Southwestern Writers Collection, Special Collections, Alkek Library, Texas State University-San Marcos Biographical Sketch Jody Fischer was born December 21, 1949. During the 1970’s she lived in New York City, and was active with the music scene. She was a bit of a musician and writer herself. According to a 1991 Texas Monthly article, she started following Willie Nelson in the early 1970’s helping wherever she could. When he purchased the Pedernales Country Club in 1979, she was hired on as his personal secretary. Her job was to schedule studio time for Willie and his musician friends, assist Lana Nelson with charitable work, and generally assist in managing the property. She also had a small part in his movie, Red-Headed Stranger, which was filmed on the property. When Willie Nelson began the Farm Aid movement, Jody took calls coming in from famers and their families, and is often quoted as being a compassionate listener. She was very close to the extended Nelson family, as well as involved in diverse causes such as Farm Aid and Native American civil rights.

They only ever had one album and it is a gem. You will pick up a copy in our $10 bin. It tells of the dad who used to drive his wife to church. At first he would wait in the car drinking his “Jim Beam from a sack” (what Americans call a brown paper bag). Then he would sit up the back, ostensibly to keep out of the cold outside.

The collection contains 877 recordings, including LPs, 45 rpms, audio cassettes, compact discs, VHS cassettes, and DVDs. Included in the collection are recordings under Nelson’s leadership as well as recordings on which he is a guest musician, producer, or songwriter. Highlights from the collection include Nelson’s first 45 rpm record released under his name, “No Place For Me” b/w “Lumberjack” (pictured above), numerous live recordings, studio demos, and deluxe-edition CDs with rare and previously unreleased material. Some of Nelson’s earliest recordings as a guest musician and songwriter are featured in the collection that represents the bulk of Nelson’s official discography. The collection is arranged chronologically by publication date. Not every recording is dated, and some are listed with an approximate date of release. Some recordings are listed by their original release date, not the date of production of that particular disc, cassette, etc. For example, The Troublemaker was originally released on LP in 1976.
