** Through the inclusion of the pieces from the 2018–2020 syllabus, the Grade 8 piece Prelude no. 12 (‘Minstrels’) by Debussy is again available for candidates to play in exams during 2021–2023. Debussy’s music is infused with influences from musical cultures across the world. At the time this piece was written, a popular form of European entertainment was that of the minstrel show, which often involved white performers with blackened faces. Rather than a musical style or genre, the minstrel shows were often based upon a characterisation of black musicians and the music they played — one that is unacceptable by today’s standards. Debussy is thought to have encountered such performances in Europe in the early 1900s; he composed Prelude no. 12 (‘Minstrels’) shortly afterwards, in 1909–1910. Rather than removing this piece from our syllabus this year, we decided to take this opportunity to highlight the problematic contexts in which some established works in the classical music canon were created. = Pieces in Trinity’s graded exam books † Young Composers’ Competition winner: Grade 8 — see trinitycollege.com/YCC for more information 73 Piano: Grade 8
