NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION (June 15, 2013) Contact: Judy Willson ([email protected] or 719-488-4052) NCBWA First Vice President/Associate Director of Communications, Mountain West UCLA’S BERG NAMED 2013 NCBWA STOPPER OF THE YEAR OMAHA, Neb. (NCBWA) --- UCLA relief pitcher David Berg is the 2013 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Saturday prior ot the beginning of the College World Series. Berg, the 2013 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, has posted a record of 7-0 with 21 saves while currently leading the nation in ERA with a 0.88 mark. Berg's 21 saves are also a new UCLA single-season record and rank tied for second in all of Division I baseball, two shy of tying the single-season NCAA Division I record. In addition, he is second in the country in WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) with a mark of 0.80 and has allowed the second-lowest opposing batting average (.194) in the conference. The sophomore from Covina, Calif., has also given up fewest runs (7) and walks (8) in the Pac-12, while appearing in the most games in the conference (46). At one point this season, the first team All-American did not allow a run in 37 consecutive innings, which was the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the nation this season. In the postseason this year, Berg has recorded three saves while finishing all five of UCLA's NCAA postseason games. The right-hander has helped UCLA post a current 44-17 overall record and a 21-9 record in the Pac-12 Conference.

Savage’s seventh recruiting class at UCLA features five pitchers, four infielders, one catcher and one outfielder. “These incoming players are fantastic additions to our program, and we are really looking forward to seeing what they can do at the collegiate level,” Savage said. “We have brought in a balanced recruiting class, from a pitcher and position player perspective. Our coaching staff believes that these guys will be able to contribute from the start.” Two of the 11 incoming players, Kevin Kramer and Jake Ehret, were selected in the MLB Draft last June. Kramer, a freshman infielder from Turlock, Calif., was selected in the 25th round of the MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians. Ehret, a freshman right-hander from San Dimas, Calif., was chosen in the 37th round by the Florida Marlins. Outfielder Eric Filia-Snyder, a four-year varsity standout at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., twice earned Sunset League MVP acclaim in addition to securing first-team All-CIF accolades as a senior. In addition to Ehret, the group features right-handed pitchers David Berg (Bishop Amat HS), Michael Kerman (Long Beach City College) Zack Ortiz (Cypress HS) and left-hander Grant Watson (Bakersfield Centennial HS).

The group features numerous standouts from powers such as defending College World Series champion Vanderbilt, runner‐up Virginia and 17 Division I conferences nationwide. Interestingly, there were no returning position players from the first team of the 18th annual 2014 NCAA postseason All‐ America selections, but returning No. 1 crew starting pitchers Blake Fox (12‐0 record, 1.46 ERA) of Rice and Casey Bloomquist (12‐2, 1.56 ERA) of Cal Poly highlight a solid group of mound standouts returning for 2015 from the All‐ America ranks. They are joined by post‐2014 second‐team stalwarts outfielder DJ Stewart (.351, 7 homers, 50 RBIs) of Florida State and starting pitchers Kyle Funkhouser (13‐3, 1.94 ERA) of Louisville, Atlantic Coast Conference 2014 Pitcher of the Year Nathan Kirby (9‐3, 2.06) of Virginia and 2014 Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year Preston Morrison (9‐4, 1.32 ERA) of TCU on the first unit of the 2015 NCBWA elite squadron. UNI BASEBALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF WINNING Dating back to 1893, no University of Northern Iowa athletic team has won more games than the Panther baseball program. This season, UNI baseball opens its lOOth season with 952 wins all-time. (No baseball team was fielded in 1903-04, 1909-10 and 1943-45.) Originally begun when the school was known as Iowa State Normal School, the baseball team has represented the school when it was also known as Iowa State Teachers College and the State College of Iowa before assuming its present title in 1967. Starting in the years with Captain Avery as coach of the first two squads, the Panthers have built a program that thrives on hard working young men dedicated to being the best they can be on the diamond and in the classroom. Last year was no exception, as five Panthers; Ryan McGuire, Kevin Briggeman, Greg Woodin, Scott Sobkowiak and Aaron Houdeshell were named academic all-MVC by the sports information directors of the league.
