Wicklow Mountains Path Survey Farbreaga Start to Finish: T 052 858 to T 03427 87809 Altitude (lowest – highest): 220m – 435m Weather: Sunny Access: Aghavannagh – Rathdangan road Surveyed by: John Monaghan 10 / 10 / 03 Reproduced from Ordnance Survey Ireland Copyright Permit No. MP 006403 Abbreviations used: pw = path width tape = measuring tape set to 0.5m or 1m in a photograph for scale NSEW = North, South, East, West pic = photograph avg = average No Pos Comments / Photographs Irish Grid T 1 052 Start at entrance track to single farmhouse on Aghavannagh road 858 2 route follows the track and turns left through a gate before the farmhouse; it then follows a green grassy track uphill to a second gate; pic10 looking back shows the grassy track; Croaghanmoira Mountain and Carrickashane top left in background 3 04313 second gate 87011 4 (on a detour to the left, a single file path was found at 04248 87016 which petered out further on; there seemed to be more than one path in this area, all vague and shortlived – may be just sheep tracks; back to the main path……) 5 same veering right at the gate (No. 3 above), the muddy farm track leads gently uphill – this must have been an old bog road, leading to turf cuttings further up 6 04200 87298 pic1 shows the bog track; grass and rushes either side; the path showing signs of water damage (see loose stones, the smaller gravel washed away); Aghavannagh Mountain ahead, South Prison of Lugnacoille top right; tape 1m 7 same pic2 looking back, shows the path, tape and gps in same place 8 04115 87406 pic3 looking ahead, shows a minor single file path going uphill to the left, tape 1m and gps on it; the main path goes straight on 9 same pic4 looking back shows the path; tape 1m and gps in same place; Croaghanmoira Mountain top left in background 10 pic5 shows the path veering towards the top (NE) area of the forest; the corner of the forest above lies on the south slope of Aghavannagh Mountain 11 the path peters out at old turf banks closer to the forest edge; the area here is wet as seen in pic6; there are some indistinct paths in the area, but none seeming to lead up to Lybagh / Slievemaan… 12 03427 this survey, finished at the forest - for the moment for lack of 87809 paths! …… END .

Wicklow County Development Plan 2016‐2022 CHAPTER 10 - HERITAGE 10.1 Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to set out strategies and objectives with regard to the heritage of the County. The chapter is divided into the two main areas of built heritage and natural heritage (including landscape). The maps and schedules associated with this chapter are presented at the end of the chapter. 10.2 Built Heritage The built heritage of Wicklow refers to all man-made features, buildings or structures in the environment. This includes a rich and varied archaeological and architectural heritage to be found throughout the countryside and within the historic towns and villages of the county. Archaeological sites, features and objects both above and below ground, or underwater are evidence of human settlement from our earliest ancestors down to more recent centuries and provide information on how people in the area lived, worked and died. The architectural heritage relates to visible structures or buildings above ground of special value locally, regionally, nationally or even internationally. It covers many different building types, such as domestic houses, churches and shop premises but also includes other built elements such as bridges, piers, roads, engine houses, railways, holy wells, boundary walls to large estates, millraces, sluices and street furniture. The architectural and archaeological heritage of a town, village or place contributes greatly to the distinctive character of each local area. The Council is committed to safeguarding this heritage so that future generations may also enjoy this inheritance. This can be achieved by sensitively managing changes that occur to this heritage and by ensuring that significant elements, features or sites are retained.

PROPOSED VARIATION TO THE WICKLOW COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2010-2016 PROPOSED LARAGH-GLENDALOUGH SETTLEMENT AND TOURISM PLAN APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENT (AA) SCREENING Section 1 Introduction and Background to Appropriate Assessment 1.1 Introduction This is the Appropriate Assessment (AA) screening report of the Proposed Laragh- Glendalough Settlement and Tourism Plan (STP). This report is being carried out in line with the requirements of Article 6(3) of the EU Habitats Directive (Directive 92/43/EEC). The purpose of this report is to assess the likely effects of the proposed Laragh-Glendalough STP either alone or in combination with other projects or plans, on any Natura 2000 site and to consider whether these impacts are likely to be significant and thus require an appropriate assessment. The report has taken into consideration the European Commissions publication- Assessment of plans and projects significantly affecting Natura 2000 sites - Methodological guidance on the provisions of Articles 6 (3) and (4) of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC , Circular Letter SEA 1/08 & NPWS 1/08 from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Appropriate Assessment of Plans and Project in Ireland – Guidance for Planning Authorities (December 2009) from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. 1.2 The Laragh-Glendalough Settlement and Tourism Plan (STP) The Laragh-Glendalough STP sets out an overall strategy for the proper planning and sustainable development of the Laragh and Glendalough area up to 2022, and includes a written statement and a plan indicating development objectives for the settlement. The plan will form part of the Wicklow County Development Plan 2010-2016 and will be adopted under Section 13 of the Planning and Development Act, as a variation of the Wicklow County Development Plan 2010-2016.
