Business meetings are held quarterly as published in calendar. Northern social meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month; time and location as published in the calendar. Southern social meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month; time and location as published in the calendar. Dues are as stated on the membership form published frequently in this newsletter.

Mogazine advertising rates in U.S. dollars: Business card size: $5.00/issue or 3 for $12.50 Quarter page: $10.00/issue or 3 for $25.00 or 12 for $100.00 Half page: $20.00/issue or 3 for $50.00 or 12 for $200.00 What a great turnout for the emergency potluck/Jack Tinnea surprise birthday party! The April 18 gathering was a swell affair, as written up elsewhere in the newsletter. Thanks to all who turned out and/or sent best wishes to my spousal unit. It was special to have Ken and Pat McClinton up north again for a get-together. Thanks, Dices, for hosting us. Based on results, north and south, we should have birthday celebrations or potlucks every month.

The next northern grand event will be another potluck, at the Wellingtons', the third Thursday of May. That is the eve of the All-Brit at Van Dusen, for those who include Friday in the event. There is a rumor that the Hauges and the Stromquists will be present representing the Southerners. Does that mean they have to drawl their speech? Join us with your special dish (do put food in it) and find out.

Leaping into the future, Mike Powley has two finalists in the site competition for the December holiday party. One is available Saturday, December 7th and the other Saturday, December 14th. I will look the spaces over when I am in Vancouver for the All-Brit, and we will select one. The costs are reasonable, both offer views of the city; and Mike has done an excellent search. He has also reserved a block of 15 rooms at the Broadway Holiday Inn. If any of you have a preference for date, please let me know. We will keep you posted.

Plans progress toward a spectacular Portland All-Brit with the Morgan the featured marque. Jim Dietz (welcome back!) is designing a special T-shirt for participants. Stay tuned for the latest developments and film at eleven.

The All-Brit in Vancouver, B.C. will be in bloom before we can say roadydendron. It is the prettiest setting of the NW All-Brits, the potluck at Powleys is always a hoot; and if all goes well, our Moggie will be sporting new headers. We look forward to seeing you there.

4-16-91 The social meeting was held under threatening sks with the usual turnout of 13 folks and two Morgans. Dwight Smith brought a 3-Wheeler model kit he ordered from Military Corner in Portland. The kit is not the Brumin model but rather made in Korea. Various discussions ensued on the history of what lube oil is appropriate for use in 3-wheelers. Julian has kindly offered an awning (tent peg style) to the club as well as use of a free standing model (thank you Julian). Planners for the BC and Seattle field meets should contact him to coordinate access if they are needed. Be prepared for short notice day trips. SPRING TOUR 1991 It all started about 6 months before the date of the tour. The easy part was reserving 20 rooms in LaConner. Than we needed to find a restaurant to serve 20 to 40 people, as we didn't know how many we would have for dinner. As the months went by we found a restaurant on the channel who will reserve a room for us, it will hold 30 maybe. The couple running the Channel Landing rest- aurant are Bob & Shelia are orginally from England. Bob tells me he will close the restaurant if I can get 40 plus people. Kay Jones & Glenn Jewett want to do a rally, so we work out a schedule to have a rally and tour combination. Ten days before the tour I have 32 people for dinner and have committed us for the whole restaurant. I need 8 more people so I get on the phone, some of you can atest to this as i called. By Thursday before the Sat. tour I had 42 people committed (whew). Sat. AM those that were going on the rally and tour met at the Mukilteo Ferry. We ferryed across the bay to Langley where we just browsed around for a while then we toured over to the Whidbey Isl. Winery home of the famous Whidbeys LoganberryLiqueur. After many samples we all headed back to Langley for lunch and our Rally count down. Kay Jones was the starting Master, and Glenn Jewett was out there some where making sure we all did it right. I think we were suppose to find him some- where. We never did, maybe thats why we came in last. As we were on the last part of the Rally I was getting anxious to get to LaConner as 2 couples that I figured would be there hadn't showed up, and I wanted to be sure every- thing was allright at the restaurant where we were going to park the Morgans and Lotus. If I haven't mentioned, we had a Super 7 and a Lotus Sprit, powered by a Chev V 8 on tour with us. We freshened up in our rooms and gathered at the restaurant for cocktails befor dinner. The day was beautiful & sunny, almost warm. The first for a Spring Tour, (no rain). As we gathered for Noggin Natter we could watch the boats on the channel. Then I noticed people who I didn't know were comming, remember I committed to 40 minimum for dinner. As the restaurant filled up more members came in that I hadn't heard from, and I gave a sigh of relief as the count reached 50. Lee Harmon gave us a slide presentation of his flight from England to Australia. Lees 1948 planethat he describes as a low & slow flyer, this ment many landings in foreign places, as Saudi Arabia etc. Lees slides were a great windup to our day. Jim Dietz won 1st place in the Rally and one of the Lotus took 2nd place. Loretta and I want to thank every one that took part in the week-end., also Kay & Glenn for a rally that really added fun to our trip, also to Bob and Shelia & their crew from the Channel Landing for opening up their restaurant to us for the night, making this one of our best Spring Tours. Oh & a thanks to Mother Nature for a Sunny Day. Bob & Loretta MAP FOR THE ALL BRITISH FIELD MEET IN VANCOUVER, B . C.

This a great chance to get to experience a good cross section of classic boats. Just about every classic design layout is represented as are most of the major manufacturers of the era. From an early 30's Dodge Watercar to a 1966 Century Resorter, this promises to be an inter- esting group. So join in if you can. We'll be waterskiing, "touring" and fixing stuff all week long. Except for the waterskiing part, this should feel real normal to MOG NW members. The restoration-travel bug is something we all have in Common. Perhaps we'll get a chance to trade secrets, war stories, and maybe create a few new ones during this trip. Remove wheels and brake drums.

Pull hub from axle shaft. If frozen on (tapered fit), remove four nuts on backplate bolts, and pull axle shaft with backplate as one unit using a slide hammer puller. The outer race of axle shaft bearing will separate from bearing as the axle shaft is pulled. You may have to cut the axle bearing off before you can get the backplate, shims, and steel plates off of axle shaft. Best take it to a machine shop. They sometimes have to put some heat to the hub as it is being pressed off of axle shaft. When pulling axle shaft out of axle housing, adjust the jaws of the slide hammer puller over axle nut and behind the large washer. Make sure you put the axle shaft nut on far enough so that the nut has a good grip and the threads won't get damaged.

Pull the seals out of the ends of the axle housing. To do so, reverse the jaws of your (rental shop) slide hammer puller, and pull the seals.

Remove axle shaft bearing from axle shaft with drift punch and hammer (if hub wasn't frozen on and you didn't have to cut the bearing off).

Check to see if bearing has been spinning on axle shaft. It should be a tight, press fit. If it has been spinning (like mine was on one axle shaft), you'll have to visit your favorite machinist and have him build up the surface of the axle shaft where the bearing fits, and turn it down to proper diameter.

Clean inside of axle housing where seal and bearing race fit. Clean out little hole where excess grease squirts out when you grease rear axle bearings (you do this don't you?). Lacquer thinner makes a good cleaner. No residue.

Tap new seals in axle housing. Install with lip Inward. I put a very small bead of Permatex Aviation Form-A--Gasket around seal before tapping into place. Old seal Is "Retainers 3HA - 027 0 , Replace with BAP GEON seal: uN 15 - 39304. Cost is about $4.50 each. Readily available.

Tap new tapered roller bearing on axle shaft with drift punch. Make sure it's up firmly against shoulder on axle shaft. This two-part bearing (bearing and outer race) is Timken 14276 and Timken 14130. Readily available.

Now you're ready to install axle shafts and set up proper end clearance (float) between axle shafts.

Place axle shaft through seal into housing and into splined gear of differential assembly, being careful not to damage seal.

Tap outer bearing race in place over bearing with drift punch, leaving more than thickness of shims protruding beyond surface of end flange of 2

axle housing.

Put steel shims over the four bolts on each side, and both steel plates with thinner steel plate that has the smaller inside diameter on the inside next to the shims (leave the brake back plates off for now). Tighten four nuts evenly and tap the steel plates firmly with a hammer as you progressively tighten the nuts. This will "press home' the outer bearing race. The steel shims will give the clearance or end float between the axle shafts. With both axle shafts installed as described above and with the nuts screwed on the end of the axle shafts, use a hardwood block, and rap the end of each axle shaft with a hammer to ensure the bearing races are up against the steel plates.

With a dial indicator, check end float of axle shafts. You need to check one side only of course. End foat shoud be .001-005 inch. If you have too much, you'll have to remove a shim(s). Not enough, and you'll have to add shims. Chances are you'll be real close with the number and size of shims which you took off the car.

Once end float is accomplished, remove the four nuts, and steel plates. Reassemble on each side in this order: shims, thin steel plate, paper gasket, backplate, paper gasket, thick steel plate, paper gasket, seal retainer plate with new hub seal (lip of seal turns in). Old seal is Retainers HA-032-3. Replace with CR Industries 18657. Readily Jalable. Torque all four nuts to cbout 35 foot pounds. Head of bolts outside. Before going any further, grease the axle bearing with your trusty grease gun until you can see grease filling around the bearings.

Put antisieze compound on tapered portion of axle shaft. If you have to remove the hub again some years down the road, it won't be frozen on the axle. Put key in keyway (groove) in axle shaft making sure taper is down and mated to taper in keyway. Line up key with groove in hub and push hub on axle shaft. Put axle shaft washer on and screw axle nut as tight as possible. With trusty grease gun, finish greasing axle shaft bearing until grease comes out of small hole in axle housing. Keep pumping until you get an inch of grease oozed out of hole. This will tell you that the bearing is completely greased and the space around the bearing Is filled with grease. When car is off of jack stands, tighten to 125 foot pounds using shims to align castelated nut with the hole in axle shaft. Install cotter pin.

Morgan worked on was a 1958 +4 with Salisbury 3HA rear axle. Flat Rad Morgans might have different axle shaft bearings. The process should be the same for all plus fours.

Your Moggie now loves you even more than before, you've learned a few things about how she's put together, and in the process saved yourself a bundle of money in parts and labor costs. Now get out there and DRIVE that little beauty! Remember Adair's motto: "Beautify America's Highways - Drive a Morgan!" LII DO 1 12
