    Arkaroola: A prime Australian site for Mars analogue field research Mars-Oz at Arkaroola: A Prime Australian Site for Mars Analogue Field Research Jonathan D. A. Clarke ([email protected]) and David Willson ([email protected]) Mars Society Australia Mars Society Australia has selected the Arkaroola region in South Australia as its prime area for Mars analogue research. The region is accessible by road and air from Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Much of the central part of the region is held under private leasehold as a wilderness sanctuary. The lessees are highly supportive of scientific and technological research. The region and its hinterland have a diversity of geological and astrobiological features of interest for Mars research and Mars exploration. These include: GEOLOGY • Modern and ancient (Neoproterozoic, Carboniferous) hydrothermal systems; • Gravel outwash plains of the present desert environment; • Late Proterozoic Wooltana Basalt with localised quartz-haematite breccia veins; • Neoproterozoic evaporitic non-clastic and minor carbonate sediments Of the Callanna and Burra Groups; • Pre-Cretaceous weathering surfaces; • Cretaceous marine shoreline deposits; • Playa lakes • Artesian springs; • Dune fields; • Iron, silica, carbonate and sulphate duricrusts; • Pleistocene high level gravels of fans and pediments, and • Holocene creek gravels. Waddikee - A town, 32 km South-West of Kimba, proclaimed on 14 July 1927, took its name from the adjacent well and rock called wadiki where J.C. Darke was killed by Aborigines on 24 October 1844. Waddikee School opened in 1942 and closed in 1945. Aboriginal for ‘wattle’. Wadjalawi - A tea tree swamp in the Hundred of Coonarie, west of Point Davenport; an Aboriginal word meaning ‘bull ant water’. Wadmore - G.W. Goyder named Wadmore Hill, near Lyndhurst, after George Wadmore, a survey employee who was born in Plymouth, England, arrived in the John Woodall in 1849 and died at Woodside on 7 August 1918. W.R. Wadmore, Mayor of Campbelltown, was honoured in 1972 when his name was given to Wadmore Park in Maryvale Road, Campbelltown.

Dean Miller rolled into town on Sunday 29 September, just in time to attend a Concerned Resident Group meeting at the Greek Hall, addressing council accountability. While many may expect such a meeting to be a culture shock for an incoming CEO, Dean said that he has worked in country councils before. Dean is an experienced leader having been the CEO at Hindmarsh Shire Council and Swan Hill Rural City Council, both in Victoria. He has had an extensive career spanning 30 years predominantly in local government. His leadership and people skills are his main attributes, along with very strong financial management and strategic planning experience. Dean is a Certified Practising Accountant and grew up in Geelong. When asked his age, he responded with, “46, plus GST”. “The challenges of the role and the opportunity to help place the Council and community on a more sustainable footing were key factors in my decision to accept the role”, Mr Miller said. He added, “My focus for the first 100 days will be to engage with as many people as possible to understand their aspirations and priorities for the future.
