MESSAGE FROM THE OSA CHAIR

Dear Alumni Shaun Edmeston, 1998

Well we seem to be seeing the back of winter and that means it is now the stretch to the end of the year. That also means the OSA Dinner (see Pg 3) and OSA Golf Day (see Pg 4) are nearly with us and space is running out so get your tables and 4 balls booked so you don’t miss out.

Another great thing happening as we move towards better weather, is the second edition of the OSA Lottery which holds some great prizes for the new year, possibly something in Hong Kong for those of you who enjoy the number 7.

If you have been to Higher Ground Restaurant recently, you would have noticed we have added a Dinner in the Sky (see pg 4) which will be available for your year-end functions and all through summer. It is an awesome experience and I would advise you to book now for an amazing meal with an even better view than before.

We continue to grow the names around the crown of our bar with the Make your Mark program (see Pg 14), an opportunity to have your name permanently placed in the One & All Club, commemorating your time at the school. For only R350, you will “Make your Mark” at the school.

We have finally found a solution for the membership cards, which has been a long time in the pipeline and will be implementing the system over the rest of the year, a system aimed at promoting the use of the facility and putting cash back in your pocket at the same time. It will take us some time to implement the system as we change over from our existing platform, but it will be worth it in the long run. Please keep your eyes open for the details on the discounts and cash back options.

With so much happening and year end functions on the way, don’t forget to book your function at the Higher Ground Restaurant, and remember Life Members don’t pay venue hire fees on their bookings of functions. Just be sure to mention it in your booking.

So enjoy the good weather and I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Regards

Shaun Edmeston Chair Old Stithian Association and Old Stithian Trust [email protected]

10 USA Reunion After discussions with Shaun Edmeston, Chair of the Old Saints Association, we have agreed to try and make things happen in the USA for Old Stithians this year. There are so many of you dotted around the States and most have expressed good wishes to get involved and get to meet some of the people you knew in the old country.

To do this, we would like to identify an event, maybe a weekend, when it would be attractive for all to come together . So I have 2 requests :

1. Please send your updated contact details to [email protected] in order for me to put together an USA database, firstly for this reunion, and secondly so that I can sent it back to the Old Stithian Association for their records. (If you are not comfortable with this, just reply back to Susannah [email protected] and let her know, and we will work around this. I assure you all direction communication is confidential).

2. Please let me have your thoughts as to what type of event, when and for how long. Also, if you would prefer with or without family, so that we can get some ideas together.

I look forward to hearing from a lot of you, and please pass this e-mail around as much as possible, so we can build a USA OSA that is healthy, robust and assistant to all Saints in the USA.

16 Crusaders Sport

Crusaders Football Club was founded in 2005, and been going on ever since. The club aims to develop talented young players within the South African community, with one of its main objectives being to provide players with access to top quality training and playing facilities, as well as specialist coaching where possible. This year (2016) the club has manged to get the services of an ex-football professional coach that is certified with the highest SAFA accredited youth coach badge in Rene Richards (Rene is now the director of coaching at Crusaders). The club emphasis is placed on the development of players in the key ages between 6 to 17 years, as well as to creating a channel for these players to follow through to the varies senior levels (i.e being both amateur and/or professional). The club’s Committee is currently constituted by the original four Club founding members, being Bruno Fernandes, Craig Sumption, Robin Goodman, and Anthony Hinds.

Membership grows every year, and the club goes from strength to strength. 30% of the Club’s younger players are from other schools in the surrounding geographical area, with St Stithians College at this stage still forming the main ‘’feeder’’ of players to the Club in this regard. (One of the Club’s aims is to continue attracting increasing numbers of young players from other schools in the surrounding areas.) Both male and female players train regularly with the Club, with a minimum two practice sessions a week, normally scheduled per age group, then a match on the weekend. The club furthermore distinguishes itself from other football clubs by focussing on developing female players as well, as the numbers in women’s football is definitely on the increase in South Africa. Again this year we are able to field a junior girls/ladies side that competes in the Rand Central Development League.
