Us Presidential Elections 2020
www.gradeup.co 1 www.gradeup.co US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2020 • Joe Biden, Presidential nominee of Democratic Party has emerged as the winner of 59th presidential election of United States against his opponent former President of US, Donald Trump of Republican Party. • Forty-eight years to the day after he was first elected a senator from Delaware, Joseph R. Biden Jr. addressed the nation for the first time as president-elect on Saturday night. In his victory speech, he emphasised on a message of unity and said the time has now come to “heal and restore the soul of America.” “I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but to unify. For all those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand the disappointment tonight. Now let’s give each other a chance. It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again. Let this grim era of demonization in America begin to end — here and now,” he said. • Kamala Harris, the first Black woman and first South Asian American woman to become vice president-elect, began her victory speech by quoting the late congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, who said, “Democracy is not a state, it’s not an act.” She also remembered her late mother and said, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.” “When our very democracy was on the ballot in this election and the very soul of America was at stake and the world watching, you ushered in a new day for America,” she added. -

This year, the 2021 New Year’s Eve ball drop occurred virtually as the world continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. Event organizers stated that this year’s ball drop happened “visually, virtual, and safely”. The countdown to midnight last year was very different from the previous years in response to the changes and challenges that 2020 faced. Last year was the first time that crowds were not able to fill the sidewalks and streets in Time Square. The ball drop had been a tradition every year since 1907. Despite the years 1942 and 1943 when the celebration had been suspended due to World War II, crowds still gathered in Times Square to celebrate the new year. More than one million people showed up at Time Square in 2019 to watch the New Year’s Eve ball drop while it was broadcasted to billions. -
