Stejně jako v předchozích svazcích řady Musicologica se zde setkáváme se širokým spektrem témat, jež se vztahují k hlavním oblastem odborného zaměření jednotlivých členů katedry. Božena Felgrová, absolventka dokto- randského studia na naší katedře, píše o uvádění opery Don Giovanni v českých zemích na konci 18. a začátku 19. století (Don Giovanni in Prague and Versions of the Opera in the Czech Lands at the Turn of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries). Ve sborníku se rovněž objeví příspěvky muzikologů z Bratislavy. Naďa Hrčková se zamýšlí nad politickým pozadím opery Das Festmahl od Juraje Beneše (Oper und Tota- lität: Politik, Musik und Theater in der Oper von Juraj Beneš Das Festmahl 1980) a Elena Letňanová se zabývá skladatelskými pokusy Friedricha Nietzscheho (Thus Composed the Philosopher: On the Occasion of the 160th Anniversary of the Birth of Friedrich Nietzsche). Při editování sborníkových prací se více než jinde osvědčuje tvrzení: „Více hlav, více rozumu“. Rád bych proto poděkoval Janu Vičarovi a Ivanu Poledňákovi za cenné připo- mínky. Marku Keprtovi vděčím za pečlivé korektury příspěvků v němčině.     Université de Montréal GABRIEL FAURÉ ET PORTISHEAD : L’ART DE L’ÉQUIVOQUE Cadre d’analyse théorique de l’équivoque mélodique et harmonique comme principe de transversalité par Christian Turcotte Université de Montréal Faculté de Musique Mémoire présenté à la Faculté de Musique en vue de l’obtention du grade de maîtrise en musicologie 12 janvier 2016 © Christian Turcotte, 2016 Résumé Ce travail de recherche propose une description du style mélodique et harmonique du groupe britannique Portishead et s’appuie sur l’analyse du répertoire complet, soit 33 chansons réparties sur trois albums (11 chansons par albums). Étant donné que le corpus étudié est restreint, il est possible de procéder à une analyse statistique qui permet de dégager une grammaire mélodico-harmonique. L’hypothèse de ce travail de recherche repose sur l’idée que l’évolution du langage musical de Portishead s’articule autour de procédés mélodiques et harmoniques favorisant un élargissement d’un cadre tonal équivoque. Pour ce faire, Portishead a recours à plusieurs procédés mélodiques et harmoniques qui entretiennent l’équivoque tonale. Or, ces procédés sont similaires, sans toutefois être identiques, aux six procédés répertoriés par Sylvain Caron (Caron 2002) au sujet de la grammaire de Gabriel Fauré. Par la mise en œuvre de plusieurs outils d’analyses, nous procédons à une étude comparée et contextualisée de certains mécanismes mélodique et harmonique qui font émerger l’équivoque, tant chez Fauré que chez Portishead. Ces outils d’analyse, comme l’analyse des vecteurs de ruptures mélodico-harmoniques, l’analyse paradigmatique ou l’analyse néo-riemannienne, ont été bonifiés afin de rendre compte de certaines particularités liées au corpus étudié.

    MODALITY AS A TOPOS OF MUSICAL NARRATIVITY MODALITA JAKO TOPOS HUDEBNÍ NARATIVITY PhDr. David Kozel, Ph.D.1 1 Department of Music Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ostrava, Czech Republic ABSTRACT Phenomenological richness of various modality types in music creates a semantic (symbolic) tensions that can lead us to interpret dimensions of musical culture. These assumptions implicate different semantic fields of meaning in the sense of folk music, sacred music and various renaissance of modal thinking at the 20th and 21th centuries (“new modality”). We can say that modality is an important element of musical narrativity, where the term topos is used to describe processes of semiosis. Key words: modality, topos, narrativity, semiosis, paradigm ABSTRAKT Jevová bohatost rozmanitých druhů modality vytváří sémantické (symbolické) napětí, které nás může přivést k interpretacím dimenzí hudební kultury. Tyto předpoklady ústí do existence různých sémantických polí významu ve smyslu lidové hudby, sakrální hudby a rozmanitých renezancí modálního myšlení 20. a 21. století („nová modalita“). Lze říci, že modalita je důležitý prvek hudební narativity, kde je termín topos použitý k popisu procesů semiózy. Klíčová slova: modalita, topos, narativita, semióza, paradigma INTRODUCTION In my essay, I perceive modality as the structural and semantic quality of music. The fundamental question is whether modality can be interpreted as a topos in the theory of musical narratology; whether modality semantically reflects not only the musical structure but also to the broad cultural, historical and social realities. My text will concern the following: the musical topoi, definition of the modality, relation of modality as a paradigm to the historical awareness of music as well as connection of modality and the topoi in the narrativity in music.

    MUSICOLOGICA BRUNENSIA 49, 2014, 2 DOI: 10.5817/MB2014-2-4 LUBOMÍR SPURNÝ CZECH MUSIC SEMIOLOGY To say “music semiology” already means a certain classification. With its help, it’s possible to interpret the syntax of music and the process of structuring a mu- sical work; semiology thus becomes part of music theory. Semiology (at least as a music-oriented pragmatic system) can be an inspiration to music sociology, historiography, ethnomusicology. Not even the emancipatory tendencies of the last few decades have deprived semiology of its links to aesthetics. It is still true that questions of signs and meanings in music is one of the key problems of music aesthetics. Its study offers three possible approaches with, of course, a range of varieties and cross-currents. The most radical approach denies that music carries any sign, or even a communicative status. A second approach, let’s call it “non- semiotic formalism”, connects the meaning of a work with the way it is structured and modelled at all levels. The third approach acknowledges that music is a sign structure of its own kind and that musical signs have specific meanings. Speaking about signs and meanings doesn’t necessarily make us music semi- ologists. The whole intricate issue can be usefully described from a view outside the actual music-semiotic discourse, as has been done so for instance by Carl Dahlhaus, Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht or Peter Faltin. On the other hand there were authors like Zofia Lissa, Vladimír Karbusický, Christian Kaden or Jiří Fukač, who essentially recognized the need of musical semiology (or specifically the semantics of music), who were aware of the fact that the results of semiotic interpretation don’t always sound convincing enough.

By examining Janáček’s musical background, specifically: (1) musical studies and early influences, (2) the influence of Herbartian philosophy on his musical theoretics, and (3) the influence of his ethnographic studies on his musical theoretics, I will provide important context in understanding the development of his innovative and distinctive compositional style. As a composer and theorist, Janáček sought a purer and more modern means of expression than that of his contemporaries with the artistic aim of relating all compositional elements to real human emotion and psychological phenomena. On an Overgrown Path is one of his first of his works to reflect this cultivated technique. Each piece in the cycle’s first series will be explored by analyzing the features that can be linked to his philosophical and cultural influences and by discussing the resulting emotional affects.
