PLEASE PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE FOLLOWING

BACKGROUND INFORMATION/PROJECT HISTORY: Kru (“Teacher”) Sangwal is a kindergarten teacher at Khun Tan Kindergarten School, which is one of the elementary schools of Pa Taan subdistrict in . She is well-known and capable in regards to child development, has developed several textbooks and manuals for child development, and teaches Early Childhood Development cirriculum at Rajabhat University in Chiang Rai.

In addition to organizing and administrating the local kindergarten, she is also a key actor in the community for several reasons. First, she created a pilot program for an interactive youth library at the school which is used as a training opportunity for teachers throughout the entire province. As a provincial advisor for kindergarten teachers, groups from 4 different districts come on a weekly basis to receive trainings from her. Also, she collaborates with the local daycares and shares equipment and educational media with them, thus affecting children in all 14 villages of Pa Taan.

This project would help her improve her library program/training center. Currently she has all of the materials and resources necessary for a library room and teacher training center, but lacks a location for them. Right now the library is located in one of the kindergarten classrooms which is where the trainings take place. However, there is one vacant room on the school premises which Kru Sangwal is planning to renovate and use as: 1) the interactive youth library; 2) a conference room for the aforementioned teacher trainings; and 3) a community meeting area that can be used by occupational groups, village headmen, and local NGOs.

She is currently on queue for funding from the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) to acquire the funding for the renovation of the room, as well as bookshelves, computers, and early childhood development software. However, she is still in need of a large conference table and chairs, and a projector. When the PCV asked her which of these were of higher priority for her, she replied that the table and chairs were more important.

We are therefore requesting FoT funding to purchase a large conference table and 15 chairs for this project. Kru Sangwal is well-educated, very highly motivated, and is a great example of rural self-development. Providing her with this tangible equipment would assist the community, as well as the four surrounding districts in benefiting from her work.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS: Objective 1: By January 2010, Anuban Khun Tan school will have a functional skills training center for local and provincial teachers. As a result, Kru Sangwal will increase teacher trainings by 20% from year 2009 to year 2010.

Objective 2: By January 2010, students of Anuban Khun Tan school will have an interactive youth library room. As a result, students can access educational materials in a more supportive atmosphere.

Objective 3: By January 2010, community members of Villages 1,2,5, and 11 of Pa Taan subdistrict will have an open forum meeting room located at Anuban Khun Tan School. As a result, community/occupational group meetings will increase by 30% from year 2009 to year 2010.

Benefits: • Will foster a learning atmosphere for the kindergarten students of the Anuban Khun Tan School by creating a supportative location and materials necessary for students to learn. • Will improve the quality of teacher trainings for faculty visiting from 4 other districts by creating a formal business setting for the trainings • Will provide a suitable meeting area for community meetings, occupational group trainings, and cultural activities for the surrounding community members.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Existing assets for the center include a library of 150 children’s storybooks, resources and manuals on early childhood development that Kru Sangwal acquired with World Vision (a Christian NGO) and Thai government funding, and support from the daycare teachers who work adjacent to the kindergarten classrooms.

Additional funding for room renovation and equipment will be arriving from AMCHAM in early 2010.

SUSTAINABILITY: Since Kru Sangwal is a key actor with her already-existing library, and is an excellent human resource to utilize, purchasing this equipment will ease the process of providing early childhood development training to both local and provincial teachers in Khun Tan District, Chiang Rai Province. Also, when using the room as a child learning center, this equipment will assist the youth with educational development activities.
