TV1+1 Se proposant de nous faire connaître cette discipline de qualité, Janine Charrat a invité trois compagnies parmi q w F les plus représentatives dans ce pays CD - BATSHEVA DANCE COMPANY (du 3 au II décembre), b dont Robert Cohan assure la direction artistique, ainsi o que celle du London Contem_norary Dance Theatre . a - MIRALI SHARON DANCE COMPANY (du 12 au 15 décembre), dont ce sera la première venue en France . O r- - KIBBUTZ DANCE COMPANY (du 17 au 21 décembre) qui a la particularité d'être composée exclusivement de membres du kibbutzim et qui présentera les 17 et 20 décembre à 14 h .30 un spectacle destiné aux enfants. Les oeuvres présentées seront pour la plupart de chorégra- phes israéliens, mais la Batsheva Dance Company pro posera également une chorégraphie de John Cranko (Ebony Concerto) et les " Collectionneurs" de Janine Charrat. A ce programme de ballets inédits en France s'ajoutera une série de répétitions publiques gratuites, destinées à favo- riser une approche plus sensible de la danse. D'autre part, une exposition à base de diapositives, vidéos, maquettes, affiches, etc . retraçant l'histoire de la danse en Israël depuis 1920, sera mise en place au Petit Foyer du Centre dès le 26 novembre 1980. Fruit tout d'abord d'une collaboration très proche avec Martha Graham, elle a accueilli par la suite de nombreux chorégraphes (Jérôme Robbins, José Limon, Kurt Joos, etc . .) avant de don - ner leur chance à des artistes israéliens (Rena Gluck, Moshe Efrati, Rina Schenfeld, Mirali Sharon, etc . .). Depuis cinq ans, la Compagnie est devenue une institution pu- blique et favorise entre autre la formation de groupes expé- rimentaux où travaillent jeunes chorégraphes, compositeurs et scénographes. Elle a collaboré avec les théâtres les plus importants de ce pays et a été amenée à chorégraphier de nom- breux spectacles à l'occasion d'évènements nationaux. Elle a séjourné sept ans aux Etats-Unis, travaillant avec Aiwin Nikolais et Murray Louis, et a voyagé avec sa propre compagnie à travers les Etats-Unis et le Canada. Depuis son retour en Israël, elle a constamment travaillé avec les compagnies Batsheva et Bat-Dor, pour lesquelles elle a créé de nombreuses oeuvres. Programme 1°). L'éducation du kibbutz accordant une grande importance à l'ex- pression artistique, il y existe de nombreux studios de danse d'où ont été recrutés les membres de la Kibbutz Dance Company. Fondée en 1970, elle a son port d'attache au Kibbutz Gaaton dans l'ouest de la Galilée. De style moderne, elle se distingue des autres troupes par son approche et sa technique de travail . Elle s'est produite dans différents kibbutzim, mais aussi dans les régions urbaines d'Israël et en Europe Occidentale (Hollande, Belgique, France, Italie et Angleterre). Célébre à cause des guerres et du terrorisme qui sévissent dans notre région, et font les gros titres de la presse mondiale, Israel s'est aussi fait connaitre par ses danseurs, appréciés dans de nombreux pays . Les troupes Israéliennes sont invitées convoquées à des tournées en Europe, en Amérique du Nord et du Sud, et arrivent jusqu'en Australie et en Extrême-Orient . Le développement prodigieux de la danse moderne en Israel ces vingt dernières années, fait pendant à ce que l'on appelle "l'explosion de la danse" aux Etats-Unis, et se fait remarquer aussi dans tous les pays d'Europe Occidentale et particulièrement en France. Cependant les débuts de la danse artistique contemporaine en Eretz Israel se situent bien avant la constitution de l'Etat indépendant d'Israel en 1948, conformément à la résolution de l'O .N .U .. Dès le début des années vingts, arrive en Israel, de Russie, le danseur Barukh Agadati, créateur de ballets dont les personnages sont caractéristiques des communautés juives Est-Européennes. Cependant il élargit rapidement son répertoire, y intégrant des personnages de l'Eretz Israel de l'époque . Pionniers, arabes rencontrés à Jaffa et juifs du Yémen enrichissent son imagination et sa création artistique . En cela il précédera une des plus importantes personnalités créatrices de la danse Israélienne, Sara Levi-Tanaï, fondatrice du Théatre de la danse Inbal dont les premiéres activités remontent à 1949 sitôt après la guerre de l'Indépendance . Agadati crée des personnages dans le style impressioniste, proche du cubisme des années 20. Il donne des récitals dans les villes d'Eretz Israel et fait des tournées en Europe Occidentale. En 1925 la ballerine Rina Nikova, ancienne élève de la célébre école de Léningrad, fonde à Jérusalem Le Ballet Biblique . Son groupe est composé de jeunes filles d'origine yéménite à qui elle enseigne la danse d'ecole . En même temps elle fait connaissance avec les chants et danses de la riche tradition yéménite juife et s'inspire des rythmes orientaux. Ses thèmes bibliques sont un mélange très particulier du style classique selon la vieille tradition de l'école Russe, et du goût oriental-juive des juifs du Yémen . Ses ballets se distinguent par leur lyrisme . Rina Schenfeld (photo : Acon Avant le déclenchement de la 2ème guerre mondiale le ballet biblique est invité à Paris par le Baron de Rothschild . La troupe part en tournée dans d'autres pays, mais celle-ci est brusquement interrompue par la guerre . C'est le retour précipité en Eretz-Israel. Au début des années 30 une danseuse de Vienne, Gertrud Kraus, déjà célébre en Europe, donne ses premiéres représentations en Eretz Israel (Tel-Aviv, Jérusalem, Haifa, kiboutzim de la vallée d'Izréel) et devient du jour au lendemain une des personnalités centrales du monde de la danse israélienne. Après la montée des Nazis au pouvoir en Allemagne et l'aggravation de la situation des juifs plusieurs danseuses célèbres, immigrent en Eretz Israel parmi lesquelles, Tilla Roessler et les soeurs Orenstein . Gertrud Kraus immigre définitivement en 1935 et crée le premier groupe de danse moderne à Tel-Aviv . Kraus est la représentante par excellence du style expressioniste dans le domaine de la danse, appelé à l'époque "German dance" et qui évolue en Amérique en "Modern dance" sous l'influence de Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey et leurs contemporains. Plusieurs des principaux créateurs de la danse modern israélienne furent dans leur jeunesse des élèves de Gertrud Kraus, décédée il y a 4 ans. Au début des années 50 arrivent en Israel un certain nombre d'artistes de la danse, originaires des Etats-Unis, parmi lesquels Rena Gluck et Rina Shaham . Quelques jeunes israéliens doués, partent étudier à New-York, capitale du monde de la danse moderne . A leur retour ils se joignent aux danseuses de Gertrud Kraus dans le but de créer une troupe de danse professionnelle. La création du Théatre de la danse Inbal par Sara Levi-Tanai dans les années 50, marque le début d'une grande évolution dans la danse moderne originale israélienne . C'est, avec les récentes immigrations du Yémen, la redécouverte des richesses ethniques de la communauté juive-yéménite.

American, German or Israeli Views of Dance" By Judith Brin Ingber The crux of dance writing, history, criticism, research, teaching and performance of course is the dance itself. Unwittingly I became involved in all of these many facetsof dance when I came from the US forfive months and stayed in Israel forfive years (1972-77). None of these facetswere clear cut and the diamond I thought I treasured and knew how to look at and teach had far more complexity, influences with boundaries blending differently than I had thought. Besides, what I had been taught as to how modem dance developed or what were differencesbetween types of dance had different bearings in this new country. My essay will synthesize dance informationand personal experiences including comments on Jewish identity while reporting on the ascension of modem dance and folkdance in Israel. It was only later as I began researching and writing about theatre dance and its development in Israel, that I came to realize as important were the living dance traditions in Jewish eydot (communities) and the relatively recent history of the creation of new Israeli folkdances. I came to see dance styles and personalities interacting in a much more profoundand influential way than I had ever expected. I was a studio trained ballet dancer, my teachers Ballets Russes alums Anna Adrianova and Lorand Andahazy; added to that, I studied modem dance at SarahLawrence College in New York.

    Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world.

School for Classical & Contemporary Dance iii ABSTRACT Since Israel became an independent state in 1948, the country needed to foster a cultural identity and establish a greater scope of allies with countries outside of the Middle East. Using the United States as a model for dance as cultural diplomacy, the Israeli government has sponsored dance companies to travel abroad to foster more positive international relations. Dance provides an abstract but powerful force in disseminating cultural ideals to the rest of the world, so Israel identified and supported the Batsheva Dance Company on many international tours. However, the Batsheva dance company denies that any of its work carries political attributes. Using an embodied, multi-modal research approach, I explore whether or not the Batsheva Dance Company’s dancing, Gaga Movement Language, can carry cultural and political influence. Dance is a cultural phenomenon, and thus the findings of this research point to the inherent politics and culture of movement within a dance style. Because of this Batsheva and Gaga Movement Language is not immune to the politics of the country, and is therefore a powerful force in both creating relationships abroad and disseminating true Israeli culture.
