    2020 News and Updates from Cork County Council Heritage, Commemorations and Creative Ireland Offices *Added on 08/01/20* Cork County Council Community Fund Scheme 2020 Cork County Council is committed to supporting local communities with financial assistance available through the Municipal District Community Fund Scheme which is administered by the County Council's 8 Municipal Districts. Guidelines are available here. The scheme is open for applications on Monday January 6th 2020 on YourCouncil. Applications will close at 4pm, Friday 14th February. Applications are open to the following schemes through this initiative: 1. Capital Fund Scheme - for community groups, sporting and local organisations in County Cork who wish to undertake infrastructural projects costing over €20,000 that will improve the range or quality of community-based facilities within their area e.g. community halls, sporting facilities, etc. 2. Community Contract - for Tidy Towns groups who work with Cork County Council on local works and projects, agreed with the Municipal District Officer and local Area Engineer that enhance the area in which the group is active. For the Community Contract it is strongly recommended that you contact your Area Engineer and Municipal District Officer to discuss your proposals before you apply. 3. Amenity Fund Scheme - for community groups, sporting and local organisations in County Cork who wish to undertake projects or purchase equipment that directly benefits communities and meets particular needs.     Tribute to Seamus Creagh on World Fiddle Day, 20 May 2017, Scartaglin, County Kerry. "Jackie Daly and Seamus Creagh" Originally released in 1977 by Gael-Linn, CEF 057. Re-released in 2005 and now repackaged and released again, CEFCD057. Transcriptions and text by Paul de Grae for World Fiddle Day, Scartaglin, Co. Kerry, 20 May 2017. The featured recording for World Fiddle Day 2017 is "Jackie Daly & Seamus Creagh", issued by Gael-Linn in 1977. A marvellous recording by any standards, it was highly influential at the time, making many new converts to Sliabh Luachra music far beyond the semi-imaginary boundaries of the region. 1977 was a watershed year for Sliabh Luachra music. Though many of the important musical figures were still active, and set dancing was flourishing, the music had been largely ignored outside its own area. Precious recordings made in the late 1940s and 1950s for Raidió Éireann and the BBC remained inaccessible in the archives of those institutions. With the exception of Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford's outstanding album "The Star Above the Garter", released by Ceirníní Claddagh in 1968, and one or two tracks on hard-to-find compilation albums of Irish music, no recordings of authentic Sliabh Luachra music existed. Then suddenly in 1977 a flood of material, of the highest quality, became available. The English company, Topic Records, produced a set of six albums under the title "Music from Sliabh Luachra", starting with Seamus Ennis's 1952 BBC recordings of Pádraig O'Keeffe, Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford. File No. S.350. STATEMENT OF DR. PATRICK 0'SULLIVAN, AGHADA, CO. CORK. PERIOD: 1914 to MAY, 1916. UNIT: KILNAMARTYRA C0MPANY, I.V. There were a few members of the old I.R.B. organisation in the Kilnamartyra district in 1914, of whom my uncle, Daniel Harrington, and Henry A. Brown were two. There were other members but I do not remember their names, and I do not know if they had an active organisation at that time. There was an old tradition of Fenianism in the Harrington family. One elder brother had served a sentence of eleven months in Limerick Jail for drilling in the 80's and had to go to America afterwards. They used to go drilling to Bandon and someone informed on them. Dan Harrington had joined the I.R.B. when young, and at the time the Volunteers started it was his influence that encouraged many of the young men locally to join the movement. The original Company, which was started early in 1914, had a membership of 60 to 70. Most of the men who subsequently were members of the Irish Volunteer Company were members of the original Company, though few of them were supporters of Redmond. Politically, public feeling in the parish was about equally divided between the Redmondite and O'Brienite parties.

The main aim of the project is to highlight the importance and heritage significance of the Múscraí Gaeltacht and to devise a number of heritage objectives and actions to ensure that the area is appropriately conserved, managed and maintained into the future. The word ‘Gaeltacht’ is used for areas where the Irish language is, or was until the recent past, the main spoken language. Gaeltacht areas are defined by Government order. One of them is Múscraí. 1.2 Site Identification and Profile Lying along the Cork / Kerry border, the Múscraí Gaeltacht is located 48kms to the west of Cork City (fig 1). Its population of 3,895 (CSO, 2011), represents 4% of the total number of Gaeltacht inhabitants. The Cork Gaeltacht encompasses a geographical area of 262km2. This amounts to 6% of the total Gaeltacht area. The largest settlements are the villages of Baile Mhic Íre/Baile Bhuirne and Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh. Other significant settlements include Cúil Aodha, Réidh na nDoirí, and Cill na Martra. The landscape is dominated by numerous high craggy hills and the Derrynasaggart Mountains.
