Fishing

Loch Awe is the most famous lake in all of Great Britain for pike fishing. Loch Awe is the longest loch in Scotland; measuring over 40km in length and about 1km in width. As well as pike, the loch contains healthy populations of wild arctic char, perch, brown trout and salmon.

There are also numbers of escapee rainbow trout. Water quality is high and the fish population thrives in this rich, natural feeding area. The many bays vary in size and depth and each has its own particular attraction – shallow, sandy, rocky, reedy. The current record pike weighed over 16kg. The best areas for pike are around Ford and . Your guide will provide advice on the most suitable tactics and areas to fish.

Fishing is equally good from the bank or from a boat, but having a boat enables you to move around the loch with ease to find the best areas. Both spinning techniques or float fishing with dead baits are effective. The use of live baits is prohibited. In June 2011 on Loch Awe, three Italian guests caught 9 pike in one afternoon; the smallest was approximately 5kg and the largest was 11kg. During a total of 12 days of fishing in May 2012, River & Green guests caught 24 pike from Loch Awe (average weight 7kg).

The River Orchy is a 12 mile stretch of one of the most scenic salmon fishing rivers in Scotland. It flows south from Loch Tulla, turning south west at the , then onwards through , and Strath of Orchy before turning west and finishing at Loch Awe. The salmon fishing season on the River Orchy, Scotland runs from February 11th to October 15th. Fly fishing, spinning and worm are permitted. However, this season salmon fishing is catch and release only, using barbless hooks to preserve and help increase fish stocks. From the Southern tip of Loch Tulla the river flows through seven beats (Auch, Loch Tulla, Inveroran, Upper Craig, , Craig Lodge, Lower Craig beats).

You will be fishing on the Dalmally beat. You will be accompanied by an experienced River & Green guide and you will be provided with all necessary equipment.

A magnificent baronial-style mansion, Ardanaiseig Hotel offers 240 acres of wooded grounds, a multi-award winning restaurant and elegant rooms. The hotel is situated in Kilchrenan, on the banks of Loch Awe.

The listed building offers original Victorian features and log fires throughout. The drawing room has a grand piano, whilst the library bar stocks fine whiskies. Guests can also play snooker in the games room.

This proposal is based on the provision of the Cruachan Master bedroom with loch view, with full Scottish breakfast and three course evening meal included.

Activities

Isle of Mull

Mull is the largest of the islands of and the third largest in Scotland. It has a rich cultural heritage, some stunning land and seascapes and impressive wildlife. The island's main town, Tobermory, is famed for the cheerful colours of its waterfront buildings and the yachts bobbing in the natural harbor.

Beautiful beaches and bays abound, from Calgary and Kilninian in the north to Loch Buie and Carsaig in the south. There are guided wildlife tours - the island is one of the best places to see rare sea eagles - and boat trips to the surrounding islands, including enchanting Staffa, where the motion of the waves crashing into Fingal's Cave - formed from giant basalt columns - inspired Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture.

Oban Malt Whisky Distillery

The Oban distillery sits in the town of the same name and overlooks the harbour and the sea at Scotland’s western coast. The Oban distillery was founded in 1793 by Hugh and John Stevenson on the site of an old brewery. The distillery dominates the town, despite being rather small and its aesthetics are rather imperial. The pair of stills has a capacity of just 670,000 litres per annum and almost all of this is matured and bottled as single malt Scotch whisky.

Loch Ness

With depths reaching 700 feet and a length of more than 20 miles, Loch Ness provides plenty of hiding places for its legendary monster. Should you tire of searching for Nessie, this scenic section of the also has charming villages like Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus, open-air Shakespearean productions, multiple golf courses and medieval Urquhart Castle. Wildlife of the non-mythological variety and ancient Caledonian pine forests can be found in the Glen Affric nature reserve.

Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye (an t-Eilean Sgiathanach in Gaelic) takes its name from the old Norse sky-a, meaning ‘cloud island’, a Viking reference to the often mist-enshrouded Cuillin Hills. A 50-mile-long smorgasbord of velvet moors, jagged mountains, sparkling lochs and towering sea cliffs. The stunning scenery is the main attraction, but when the mist closes in there are plenty of castles, crofting museums and cosy pubs and restaurants to retire to.
