5 Potters Bar Community News Working in the Community – A Guider With the Girl Guide movement celebrating its centenary in 2010, it seemed appropriate to speak to a Potters Bar Guider who has been involved with Brownies, Rainbows and Girl Guides for 53 years. Mary Willatt joined the 3rd Potters Bar Brownies at 7 years of age, then became a Girl Guide. At 17 she obtained her warrant which gave Mary the qualification required for leadership. For six years she has led Rainbows and four units of Guides and Brownies, and for seven years was District Commissioner. During this time Mary formed the Trefoil Guild, a group of retired Guiders and Scouters who meet socially once a month. She has also been County Commissioner, a Trainer and Camp Adviser for the Guide Association, and currently runs the 1st Little Heath and 3rd Potters Bar Brownies, and the 3rd Guides. In 1987 Mary was awarded the Silver Fish, the highest award in Guiding, for her training and development work overseas. Many changes have occurred in the movement since its inception, and not least in the uniforms. Modern Brownies and Guides have choices in skirts, shorts and trousers, with T-shirts, gilets and sweatshirts. Brownie badges are more colourful than earlier ones, and reflect the interests and activities of 7 to 10 year-olds, with the aim of developing life skills. Guides earn their badges through projects that involve their patrols, and have more input into what they will do at their weekly meetings, at camps, and at other adventurous activities. In her earning life Mary is the head teacher of a primary school. For leisure, she enjoys gardening and music, including playing piano, `cello, flute and clarinet, and teaching recorder and guitar. Asked which areas of her life she most enjoys, Mary said they are all interesting because of the variety, but Guiding is particularly special as she learnt so much about relationships, skills development, and gaining confidence. As a result, she likes to use her experiences to benefit the community, and is pleased when a shy 10 year-old girl becomes a confident 14 or 15 year-old who is able to lead, make decisions and take responsibility. In her role as Guider, Mary stresses that she has a lot of help, not only from the other leaders but also from parents who give their assistance so willingly. It is this kind of helpfulness that makes the Potters Bar community so interesting, where communication is good, and newcomers are welcomed. Joy Stovell For more information about Guiding, contact Sue on 01707 850147. Also, visit the museum at Wyllyotts between January and June where much local Guiding memorabilia will be on display.

The Rotary Foundation, to which our club subscribes, is the largest charity in the world. The purpose of a Rotary club is service in the community and internationally whilst having fun. The Rotary motto is ‘Service above self’ How it all began tremendous success achieved to date. We trust the following pages will encourage others to join us in our work. It all began early in 1958 when Eric Tingey, a member of the Rotary Club of Hatfield, invited Harold Walden, Hedley Charities supported over 50 years Morgan and Henry Gerber to form a Rotary club in Potters Bar. Sightsavers Our first involvement with Sightsavers was in 1981. It was then called ‘Eye Camps for India’ part of the ‘Royal Commonwealth for the Blind’ which had been adopted by RIBI. The cost of sponsoring an Eyecamp was £130.00, where it cost just £3.00 for a sight restoring cataract operation. Eyecamps for India was changed to Sightsavers in 1993 and included projects in Africa. In 2003 we supported The River Blindness Project. In 1995 our club was linked with the Rotary Club of Yamunager, India. Since 1981 our club has made regular contributions. Our support has been acknowledged by Russell Richards of Sightsavers who wrote:- ‘The Rotary Club of Potters Bar has been supporting Sightsavers since 1981, during that time they have been one of the most constant and loyal Rotary clubs that support Sightsavers.
