The Stags continue their climb to the top of the MAAC under the fifth year head coach John Sagnelli Head Coach – Fifth Season

he 2011 season marks John Sagnelli's fifth as head coach of the Tmen's and women's cross country programs. The Stags have continued to show improvement under Sagnelli's tutelage. The men's team jumped up five spots at the MAAC Championships in the last two seasons, finishing 2010 in fourth place. The women's team improved by four spots in the last two seasons, finishing 2010 in fifth place at the event.

Sagnelli joined the Stags in 2007 after 12 successful seasons at the University of New Haven. Sagnelli was the men's cross country head coach for 11 seasons and spent the last four as the women's head coach. He was also the head coach of the track and field programs.

During his time at New Haven, Sagnelli helped produce 14 Division II All- Americans, a national cross country qualifier, numerous All-New England and NCAA All-Region performers, 11 conference champions, 10 New England champions, and more than 80 All-Conference selections.

In 2006, New Haven's men's cross country team achieved their eighth straight NCAA Regional ranking, placed eighth at the NCAA Regional, and had three all-conference performers. In each of his last five years, the men captured two conference championships and finished as the runner-up twice in the team competition.

One the women's side, Sagnelli guided two NCAA All-Region performers and the ECC Runner and Rookie of the Year in 2006. The women's team fin- ished third at the league championships and posted its second individual conference champion in the last four seasons. New Haven also placed one student-athlete on the Division II National All-Academic Team.

2 2011 Stags Volleyball Q & A With Coach Sagnelli

What is your coaching philosophy? I have been a coach for a lot of years and the most important thing I have learned is patience. Sometimes we get caught up in having imme- diate success. I believe that success will come but it needs to be developed first. As long as you are patient with the student-athletes and work with them to become great runners and great students, the success will come.

What type of student-aathlete do you recruit? I like to bring in student-athletes that are smart, aggressive young people. I want student-athletes that are the whole package -- they excel in the classroom and on the course. But I also want student-athletes that have a great passion for competition and want to win.

What do you ask of your student-aathletes? I ask from all of my student-athletes that they are 100 percent committed to running cross country at Fairfield. We have specific goals that we want to reach as a team and if the student-athletes aren’t committed, it’s hard to achieve those goals. That’s not to say that cross coun- try should be the only part of their college experience. I want my athletes to be well-rounded and get a full experience. I just ask that when they are at practice or at a meet, they are focused and giving 100 percent.

What is the best part about Fairfield? I’d have to say the total atmosphere of the University. Fairfield is a wonderful place. We have an excellent academic reputation, great pro- grams that engage our students, a solid athletic program, and a beautiful campus in a great location. Being so close to and the beach really attracts a lot of people with different interests. I think there is something for everyone here.

Benjamin Heslin Assistant Coach – First Season

fter spending four seasons as one of the top harriers at Fairfield University, Benjamin Heslin joins the Stags Acoaching staff for the 2011 campaign. Heslin, native of Berlin, Conn., was a three-year team captain for the Stags. He had a strong senior campaign, running the fastest-time ever by a Stag at (26:10.95) during the Iona Meet of Champions, and helping the Stags to a fourth-place finish at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships.

Heslin, who graduated last May with a degree in accounting, was named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic Team as a sophomore, junior, and senior. He also achieved a spot on the Fairfield University Dean’s List all four years. Heslin served as the Co-President for Fairfield’s Student- Athlete Advisory Committee and was also a resident advisor.

In May 2011, Heslin was presented with the Fairfield University Athletics Department William Wallin Award in 2011, which is bestowed upon the student-athlete who best demonstrates the highest levels of sportsmanship, character, and leadership on and off the field. In addi- tion to his performance and captaincy on the cross country team, Heslin was a resident advisor and active on campus. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference

airfield is committed to a strong academic support program for its student-athletes. In 1995, the Athletic Department implemented a new support service designed to meet the unique needs of the college student-athlete. This office and its full-time staff were established to enhance the University through the pro- Fmotion of the student-athlete’s wholesome self concept. Year-round programs encompass daily academic development as well as career goals and personal growth. The programs provide an academic support system that integrates the use of study halls, tutorials, basic study skills workshops, and personal advising. The support services are tailored to meet the specific needs of each student-athlete. The Academic Center, located in the Walsh Athletic Center, is reserved for the exclusive use of student-athletes. The room encompasses individual and group study areas, a dozen desktop computers with internet access for research and desktop publishing. In 2006, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised funds to have the center set up with full wireless internet capacity, so student-athletes can use personal laptops.

The Skills to Achieve Growth and Success (S.T.A.G.S.) program is specially designed to assist student-athletes in their overall development. The S.T.A.G.S. program encompasses an ongoing approach to impart and reinforce the skills necessary to meet the academic rigors of Fairfield University.

he Strength and Conditioning Center is a 4,700-square foot facility located in the Walsh Athletic Center for exclusive use by student-athletes. The facility, one of the best in the TMetro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), is designed to meet the changing needs of today's student-athletes and is staffed with a full-time strength and conditioning coach. A quality strength and conditioning program is an integral part of Fairfield's athletic programs and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Mark Spellman is responsible for supervising, developing, and implementing workouts for all varsity athletes. Coach Spellman's programs reach team and individual performance goals. Coach Spellman, a nationally certified condi- tioning specialist, supervises the University's varsity weight room. His goal is to decrease the potential for injuries while developing athletes who are stronger, faster, more powerful, flex- ible, and metabolically efficient. Each year, teams are placed on sport-specific, periodical training programs and Spellman works closely with the Sports Medicine Department to pro- vide individualized attention to athletes who have specific needs or require injury rehabilita- tion. Sports Medicine

he Sports Medicine Department at Fairfield University is a vital part of the student-ath- lete experience. The sports medicine facility is located in the Walsh Athletic Center, with Ta staff comprised of five Nationally Certified Athletic Trainers, including three full-time and two graduate assistant trainers. Director of Sports Medicine, Mark Ayotte, supervises the day-to-day activities for more than 500 student-athletes in 20 intercollegiate athletic programs. Under his guidance, the sports medicine staff works with student-athletes by providing information and techniques for proper conditioning and nutrition. The staff also supervises and conducts any physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols that a student-athlete may have to follow to safely return to competition. Additionally, the department has an extensive support staff consisting of a variety of first- rate medical and health professionals. Members of this support staff include: a group of orthopedic physicians, dentists, a plastic surgeon, neurologists, a dermatologist, cardiolo- gists, an ophthalmologist, a sports psychologist, a sports nutritionist and physical thera- pists. The Walsh Athletic Center is the hub for coaches, staff, and student-aathletes alike Thomas J. Walsh Athletic Center Fairfield University's commitment to athletics is best illustrated by the completion of the Thomas J. Walsh, Jr. Athletic Center, a 51,000 square-foot structure that caters to the aca- demic and athletic needs of its student-athletes. Perhaps the building's most significant feature is a high-tech academic study center that is reserved for student-athlete use. The center includes individual and group study areas, computer terminals, hardwire and wireless internet access, a portal to educational systems, and a complete reference library. The build- ing also serves the athlete as well, offering a practice gymnasium for men's and women's basketball as well as volleyball.
