LIVE in Los Angeles. This first ceremony of the 66th Emmy Awards honored guest performers on television dramas and comedy series, as well as the many talented artists and craftspeople behind the scenes to create television excellence. Produced for the 20th year by Spike Jones, Jr., this year’s Creative Arts Awards featured an array of notable presenters, among them Jane Lynch, Tony Hale, Amy Schumer, Allison Janney, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Morgan Freeman, Tony Goldwyn, Aisha Tyler, Joe Manganiello and Carrie Preston. Highlights included Jon Voight’s moving posthumous presentation of the Academy’s prestigious Governors Award to casting icon, Marion Dougherty. Voight was one of Dougherty’s discoveries. Según la visión heredada del Romanticismo, imaginamos que esta experiencia alcanza al oyente en actitud receptiva y meditativa, a veces extasiada. Pero resulta mucho menos común convenir que una programación también es el resultado del diálogo, explícito o implícito, entre la institución organizadora, los intérpretes participantes y el público potencial. Este proceso, en el caso de la programación de la Fundación Juan March, está guiado por cuatro principios. En primer lugar, la selección de los compositores y de las obras de cada programa deriva del concepto o de la perspectiva preestablecida que explora cada proyecto. De modo que, como es habitual en esta institución, la temporada no se conforma por conciertos sino por ciclos de conciertos. En segundo lugar, el contenido explora la variedad y el contraste llegando a alcanzar los extremos: de la música medieval a la contemporánea, de los repertorios clásicos a los folclóricos, de las obras escritas a las improvisadas, de los instrumentos convencionales a las rarezas. En tercer lugar, se acompaña de un cierto espíritu didáctico a través de los programas de mano y de las presentaciones antes y durante algunos conciertos, un rasgo que se potencia esta temporada. Y, por último, el formato de concierto habitual se diluye en determinados casos para escrutar otros modos de percibir la música que combinen la interpretación en vivo con la literatura, la pintura o la luz. -

Calling themselves the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence in Exile, or SETI-X, the group claimed to have received an alien transmission of rearranged sound from the Voyager Golden Record, a phonograph album famously sent into outer space in 1977 on each of NASA’s two Voyager spacecraft (Figure 1). The Golden Record had been put together in the mid-1970s by a panel convened by astronomer Carl Sagan, and it held a program of sounds and music of Earth, representing to imagined aliens our planet’s soundscapes, voices, and musical traditions. [2] 1 Because the scientists of SETI-X wished to remain anonymous, Seeland sought a public voice or commentator from other quarters. Because the label had in 2003 released a CD I had created, Xerophonics: Copying Machine Music, a science- and-technology themed mix of sounds of indefinite ownership (Helmreich 2003), and because I had also written about scientific notions of extraterrestrial life (Helmreich 2006), Seeland reasoned that I might be appropriately positioned to offer thoughts on the SETI-X document. A visionary and a committed defender of rational scientific thinking, he transcended the usual categories of academia to become one of the world’s best-known scientists and a true celebrity. Pach This dissertation examines how 1980s antinuclear activists utilized popular culture to criticize the Reagan administration’s arms buildup. The 1970s and the era of détente marked a decade-long nadir for American antinuclear activism. Ronald Reagan’s rise to the presidency in 1981 helped to usher in the “Second Cold War,” a period of reignited Cold War animosities that rekindled atomic anxiety. As the arms race escalated, antinuclear activism surged. Alongside grassroots movements, such as the nuclear freeze campaign, a unique group of antinuclear activists—including publishers, authors, directors, musicians, scientists, and celebrities—challenged Reagan’s military buildup in American mass media and popular culture. These activists included Fate of the Earth author Jonathan Schell, Day After director Nicholas Meyer, and “nuclear winter” scientific-spokesperson Carl Sagan.
