    [Type text] Forward Starting Hockey is a very fast game with many changes of directions. A game can be won or lost in fractions of a second. Players must master the ability to stop and start in order to adjust to the flow of the game. If a player cannot start out quickly, he /she will be behind the play and will not have success racing to loose pucks. During a game, a player will be confronted with the situation of having to start from a stationary position. This situation may happen during a face off alignment, confrontation in front of the net or getting up off the ice after receiving a good body check etc. To be effective a player does not require great speed but instead great quickness. This skating ability requires a player to reach top speed in only three or four strides. Players such as Paul Kariya, Joe Sakic and Pavel Bure have a great gift of being able to perform lighting quick starts. They are in full speed within two or three strides. By developing great quickness through proper starting techniques a player can lower the amount of time needed to reach his / her top speed. Explosive starts require quick choppy type strides which are followed by powerful, rapid and long leg drives. The ability to start effectively requires three skating components: Quickness – often we hear the term “quick feet”… to rapidly turn the legs over. Power – when skating the majority of a player’s power comes from his /her thighs i.e quads . It is a force exerted by the legs and body weight against the inside edges of the skates.

    Clark Gillies Clark Gillies was a leader as well as an amazing athlete. At 6'3" and 215 lbs., Gillies was one of the league's premiere power forwards during the second half of the 1970's and early 1980's. The left winger teamed up with fellow Hockey Hall of Famers Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier to form one of the decade's most lethal forward lines, nicknamed the "Trio Grande". Clark was drafted fourth overall by the New York Islanders whereupon he made the team following his first NHL training camp, never playing a minor professional game. As an intimidating presence on the ice throughout his career, Gillies appeared to elevate his level of play when the opposing team raised his ireHe was an efficient NHL scorer as he scored 30-or-more goals six times in his career and assisted on 30-or-more goals five times. At around the halfway point of Gillies' third NHL season, Eddie Westfall, the New York Islanders captain, removed the "C" from his sweater. After a special dressing room vote, the young Gillies was chosen as the new team captain. After two and a half seasons, Gillies resigned as captain and was succeeded by future Hockey Hall of Famer Denis Potvin. A period of league domination continued in the spring of 1980 as the Islanders won their first of four consecutive Stanley Cups equaling Montreal's achievement in the late 1970's. Nicknamed "Jethro" after the Beverly Hillbillies TV show character by his teammates, Gillies played two more seasons to end his years as a member of the team.

Center Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs and right wing Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets are the other two finalists. Werenski, 19, led all rookie NHL defensemen in scoring with 11 goals and 36 assists for 47 points with 14 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 78 games this season. His point total also stood seventh in overall rookie scoring, was 13th among all NHL defensemen, set a franchise record for points by a rookie and was the second-highest total by a blueliner in club history (51-James Wisniewski, 2013-14). Historically, he tallied the sixth-most points by a teenage rookie defenseman in NHL history. Columbus’ first pick, eighth overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft, Werenski played two seasons at the University of Michigan from 2014-16 before joining the Lake Erie Monsters, the Blue Jackets’ American League affiliate, in April 2016. He tallied 5-9-14 in 17 playoff games, recording the most assists and points by an 18-year-old in the history of the Calder Cup Playoffs. He finished second among AHL defensemen in playoff scoring to help the Monsters capture the Calder Cup championship.

Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submitted ballots for the Hart Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. The winners of the 2021 NHL Awards presented by Bridgestone will be revealed during the Stanley Cup Semifinals and Stanley Cup Final, with exact dates, format and times to be announced.
