In celebration of this significant milestone, the Queensland Government is coordinating a state-wide community art project that involves distributing large ‘tiles’ to each local government in Queensland to decorate. Mackay Regional Council is running a competition, open to all residents, to determine the design of two tiles from our region. One tile will reflect the Mackay region’s past and one will represent the hopes, dreams, aspirations and vision for the future. Once completed, the tiles will come together to form a 41 square metre art piece at the RNA Showgrounds, ready for the 2009 Ekka. This is a fantastic opportunity for Mackay residents of all ages to contribute to a state-wide community art project and to make their mark on a permanent, public artwork. Themes and topics that could be referenced in the tiles include: • Original inhabitants – Indigenous culture, tribal references; • Migrants – British, European, South Pacific, Asian etc; • Settlements – who, when, where; • Local culture – music, festivals, events, food; • Lifestyle – domestic architecture, street cricket, backyard gardens; • Industry – agriculture, markets, mining, manufacturing; • Tourism – when, where, why • Disasters – floods, cyclones, snakes, crocodiles, the depression, war years; • Education – schools, TAFE, Universities • Icons – people, places, things • Nature – flora and fauna, landscapes, seascapes. Winners of the Q150 Design Competition will receive tickets on board the Q150 steam train, which will travel to more than 30 communities throughout Queensland in 2009, visiting Mackay in May to celebrate Queensland’s 150th with events and activities. Winning entrants will also be acknowledged in the final submission of tiles to the State Government. We’d like to encourage you, your school and/or community group to get involved in this exciting project. A competition entry form and two tile templates, are available to download from our website: www.artspacemackay.com.au To enter the competition, simply create your two designs on the templates provided and submit with a completed entry form attached. Tile templates can be enlarged to A3 size but should not exceed this. The entry form also asks entrants to describe what each tile depicts. Entries for the Q150 Design Competition close 5pm, Friday 19 December 2008 and can be submitted in person (at Artspace Mackay), via post or email. If you have any questions about Mackay Regional Council’s Q150 Design Competition, please contact Tracey Heathwood on ph: 07 4961 9785 or email: [email protected]. ₪ Are you part of a small cultural group that would like to find out more about becoming an incorporated Association? In addition to providing a snapshot of highlights from this collection of artists’ books, the 60 works selected for display in Boundless exemplify the diversity and inventiveness of a growing number of artists exploring this artform, one that consistently confounds and defies simple definition. • Art Training in Brisbane to 1991
Chapter 2 Those who started, those who stayed, those who departed, those who strayed: Art training in Brisbane to 1991 Glenn R. Cooke Preamble Throughout the second half of the twentieth century the higher education sector in Australia went through a series of reorganisations culminating in the Dawkins Report 1988 which recommended that the various technical colleges, teachers’ colleges and colleges of advanced education be incorporated into a system of multi-campus universities. Negotiations were put underway so that on 1 July 1991 the Queensland Conservatorium of Music amalgamated with Griffith University. The art, craft and design courses and students of the Queensland College of Art, from Associate Diploma level on, also joined Griffith University and on 1 January 1992 an independent history of 110 years was brought to a close. The history of the college over this time also reflected a series of restructures to mirror perceived educational needs and the political agendas of Queensland governments. The Brisbane School of Arts was founded in 1881 and incorporated into the Brisbane Technical College in 1884. As a result of the Technical Instruction Act of 1908, the suburban technical colleges at South Brisbane and West End were merged with Brisbane to form the Central Art training in Brisbane to 1991 Glenn R. Cooke Technical College (CTC) in 1909. When the Queensland Institute of Technology was established in 1965 on the same site, the CTC and its Art Branch retained their independence. In 1972 the Art Branch separated from the CTC to become the College of Art (CoA) which, two years later moved from George Street to purpose- built premises shared with the Seven Hills TAFE and was formally renamed the Queensland College of Art (QCA) in 1982.
