₪ Mackay Regional Council’s Design Competition / Entries close Friday 19 December, 5pm In 2009, communities throughout the state will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the Colony of New South Wales. In celebration of this significant milestone, the is coordinating a state-wide community art project that involves distributing large ‘tiles’ to each local government in Queensland to decorate.

Mackay Regional Council is running a competition, open to all residents, to determine the design of two tiles from our region. One tile will reflect the Mackay region’s past and one will represent the hopes, dreams, aspirations and vision for the future. Once completed, the tiles will come together to form a 41 square metre art piece at the RNA Showgrounds, ready for the 2009 . This is a fantastic opportunity for Mackay residents of all ages to contribute to a state-wide community art project and to make their mark on a permanent, public artwork. Themes and topics that could be referenced in the tiles include:

• Original inhabitants – Indigenous culture, tribal references; • Migrants – British, European, South Pacific, Asian etc; • Settlements – who, when, where; • Local culture – music, festivals, events, food; • Lifestyle – domestic architecture, street cricket, backyard gardens; • Industry – agriculture, markets, mining, manufacturing; • Tourism – when, where, why • Disasters – floods, cyclones, snakes, crocodiles, the depression, war years; • Education – schools, TAFE, Universities • Icons – people, places, things • Nature – flora and fauna, landscapes, seascapes.

Winners of the Q150 Design Competition will receive tickets on board the Q150 steam train, which will travel to more than 30 communities throughout Queensland in 2009, visiting Mackay in May to celebrate Queensland’s 150th with events and activities. Winning entrants will also be acknowledged in the final submission of tiles to the State Government.

We’d like to encourage you, your school and/or community group to get involved in this exciting project. A competition entry form and two tile templates, are available to download from our website: www.artspacemackay.com.au

To enter the competition, simply create your two designs on the templates provided and submit with a completed entry form attached. Tile templates can be enlarged to A3 size but should not exceed this. The entry form also asks entrants to describe what each tile depicts.

NEW ☼ Mackay Regional Council’s Q150 Design Competition / Entries close Friday 19 December, 5pm In 2009, communities throughout the state will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales. In celebration of this significant milestone, the Queensland Government is coordinating a state-wide community art project that involves distributing large ‘tiles’ to each local government in Queensland to decorate.

Mackay Regional Council is running a competition, open to all residents, to determine the design of two tiles from our region. One tile will reflect the Mackay region’s past and one will represent the hopes, dreams, aspirations and vision for the future. Once completed, the tiles will come together to form a 41 square metre art piece at the RNA Showgrounds, ready for the 2009 Ekka.

Enclosed is a competition entry form and two tile templates, which are also available to download from our website: www.artspacemackay.com.au.

To enter the competition, simply create your two designs on the templates provided and submit with a completed entry form attached. Tile templates can be enlarged to A3 size but should not exceed this. The entry form also asks entrants to describe what each tile depicts.

Entries for the Q150 Design Competition close 5pm, Friday 19 December 2008 and can be submitted in person (at Artspace Mackay), via post or email.

If you have any questions about Mackay Regional Council’s Q150 Design Competition, please contact Tracey Heathwood on ph: 07 4961 9785 or email: [email protected].

NEW ☼ Our Valued Seniors Photographic Competition 2009 / Closes Friday 30 January 2009 You can help shape the way seniors are viewed in Queensland. Queensland’s population is ageing and it will continue to age. Currently Queensland is home to approximately 1.5 million seniors. There can be no one image to illustrate such a diverse population. The way seniors are depicted in the media helps or hinders the attitude the rest of the community has towards older people. Recognising this fact, COTA Queensland has launched a photographic competition “Our Valued Seniors” to encourage seniors and others to capture positive images of seniors in the community.

The competition is open to amateur photographers and has four entry categories each with $500 prize money:

1. Seniors Ageing Well; 2. Seniors and Youth (intergenerational); 3. Diversity among seniors ‐ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander seniors, Australian South Sea Islander seniors, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) seniors; and seniors from Non English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB); 4. Seniors Volunteering and in the Workplace.

Submit all photographs as high‐resolution digital images (min. 210mm x 250mm 300dpi RGB JPEG or TIF) on CD OR 20 x 25 cm (8 x 10 inch) print. Think of a title for each photograph and write 50 words describing the subject and how the photo was taken. Fill in the registration form and send it with your photos (maximum three per entrant) by Friday 30 January 2009 to: COTA Queensland, GPO Box 21, Brisbane Qld 4001.

For more information, entry criteria and a registration form please contact: COTA Queensland (07) 3316 2999.

6. Community Showcase…

North Mackay State High School Teachers Jen Gorman and Kerry Smith, and the winners of the Encouragement Awards Tanesha Termine, Isere Meaney and Sacha Wohlfarht, at the opening of the North Mackay State High School’s Year 12 Art Exhibition at Mackay City Library, Thursday 23 October.

The Encouragement Awards were selected by Artspace Mackay’s Public Programs Officer Tracey Heathwood. All three students are going on to study Art at different tertiary institutions across the country next year.

The exhibition was a huge success with compliments being received on the high standard of work with regards to both skills and thematic ideas coming from respected artists and gallery owners such as Leonie Sneddon and Cathy Knezevic.

A large crowd was in attendance and enjoyed the ambience created by the North Mackay State High School String Quartet .
