  • Merlin As Ubiquitous Experience Val Derbyshire
Merlin as Ubiquitous Experience Val Derbyshire t is one of the mage’s many ironies that the man whose surpassing powers conventionally depend upon separateness, and who is most often conceived as an old man supposedly beyond sexual blandishment, should in the end fall I victim to the love service that ennobles the Round Table society he helped to build. How did the autoerotic dynamic of Camelot come to be motivated and embodied in Merlin? (Goodrich 94). Close your eyes. Picture Merlin in your head. In the darkness behind your eyelids the pictures spring out vividly, just as they do for Merlin himself in the first stanzas of Karl O’Hanlon’s beautifully evocative poem, Brocéliande. In my imagination, Merlin is old; so very old. He has long silvery white hair and a long silvery white beard. He is wearing a robe of midnight blue (possibly embroidered with silver moons and stars, to simultaneously illustrate his mysticism and match his silver beard). I am not original. The Merlin I see is ubiquitous. He’s been that way since at least the 13th century. A quick search on Wikipedia or Google Images will prove this. 13th century illustration of The Enchanter Merlin by Merlin for Merlin by Robert de Howard Pyle from The Story of Boron. (“Merlin” Wikipedia). King Arthur and His Knights (1903) (“Merlin”, Wikipedia) It is difficult, as Peter Goodrich argues in his essay “The Erotic Merlin” to imagine this bearded geriatric as a locus for erotic imaginings. 30 Yet Merlin’s downfall in popular legend, and as it is related in O’Hanlon’s verses, is a tale of devastating sexual longing and thwarted desire.

In a genre styled towards women, it is appropriate to consider what cultural or social function the representations of such episodes serve.

Short Essay Questions. The author converged history with myth, bringing new life into the old tale with a fresh take upon Arthur. Eventually, his fractured kingdom is invaded by the Irish king of Lleyn, Diwrnach. Arthur and his army, carrying Gwydre's banner, travel the sea to Dumnonia but, before they can escape her, Nimue catches up with them. Although Guinevere admits that it wasn't what she wanted for herself and Arthur, she wanted to be with Arthur. While Excalibur had its fair share of tragedy to say the least, it was also complete with moments of bitter satisfaction, that softened the blow slightly, but not enough to stem the tears…. But, for the most part, this is real world soldiers and warlords facing enemeies, deception, battle and chaos as the world is perched on the verge of Armageddon; at least that is how the book tells it. Unable to get a green card, he started writing novels, as this did not require a work permit. It deals with the last weeks of Arthur's reign, his dealings with his son Mordred's revolts, Guenever and Lancelot's demise, and his perception of right and wrong.

On the surface, OUAT is a television show that constantly challenges the culturally-ingrained gender norms often found in fairy tales, as it creates new storylines for traditional fairy tales. This warrants a deeper examination of the series to understand if and how it is subverting these typical gender norms. To fully understand how gender operates in OUAT, I examined how gender affects and is affected by hegemony in the show and how this relates to our cultural understanding of gender and power.

  • Knights Pen of the Year 2021
PRESSEINFORMATION · PRESS RELEASE COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE · COMUNICADO DE PRENSA INFORMAÇOES PARA A IMPRENSA Knights Pen of the Year 2021 King Arthur, the Holy Grail, the Excalibur sword: words and terms that immediately transport you into a world of adventures and battles, of legends and stories, of virtue and bravery. This legendary realm of knights, which can so wonderfully fire the imagination, inspired Graf von Faber-Castell to create the Pen of the Year 2021. Every year since 2003, the Graf von Faber-Castell Collection has presented the Pen of the Year, a fountain pen made of particularly exquisite materials. As limited editions, each one tells of eras and peoples whose deeds have had a decisive influence on the development of mankind and its culture. The fact that the Pen of the Year 2021 is now dedicated to the heroes of the Middle Ages is also related to the history of Faber-Castell itself. The company, which was founded exactly 260 years ago, owes its unmistakable identity to its noble name and centuries of tradition, in which the Counts and Lords of Castell defended knightly virtues such as bravery and care for their subjects. The symbol of this is the characteristic Faber-Castell motif with the two fighting knights who are wielding pencils instead of lances. Chivalry: a virtue in great demand Heroism, generosity, courtesy: these are the core values that the knights of the Middle Ages cultivated and which they put above all else. The childhood of a knight ended early: young noblemen who were chosen for this career became pages for the families of knights or on larger farms at the age of seven.

  • Excalibur Rises
Excalibur Rises Vivian stood on the shores of Avalon and watched the dragon-headed prow of the boat break through the mist into the warm sunshine. She could see the cloaked figure gazing out towards her and she waved. Mer- lin. He didn’t make social calls, so he must need something. A flutter of worry passed through her. A long wooden jetty ran out into the lake, and as the boat docked, Vivian strolled along it. The boat had barely stopped moving when Mer- lin leapt ashore, and he hurried to meet her. He never changed. His hair was long and unkempt, his long beard straggled over his chest, and his worn grey cloak flapped around him. His sharp blue eyes appraised her. “Vivian, my dear. You look radi- ant. This place is suiting you.” She smiled and hugged him. He was taller than her, and he stooped as his arms wrapped around her. “Thank you,” she said. “And you look excited, Merlin. You’re up to something.” He straightened up, looking affronted. “You make it sound suspi- cious. I can assure you, this is all for the good of Britain.” Vivian stepped back, her suspicions confirmed. “I sense I will be dragged into whatever it is. You better come in.” 1 2 TJ Green She led Merlin to the long, low stone building that sat a short dis- tance from the lake shore. The Sanctuary of the Goddess. It glowed in the late afternoon sun, and the light reflected off the windows, so that it appeared to blink like a lazy cat.
