An increase in insurance requirements is both unnecessary and impractical with the result having little to do with improving highway safety. Furthermore, the addition of these requirements would negatively impact a wide range of industries that are crucial to our states and the nation. Increasing minimum liability coverage would impact any business that transports property, which would be felt by the very industries that have been deemed essential during this period of crisis. A coalition composed of truckers, farmers, and manufacturers recently sent a letter to the Committee warning of the economic impact that would come as a result of an increase in insurance rates. As you push for legislation designed to support economic recovery and growth, it is imperative that you do not add policies that would lead to even more lost American jobs.     ORA Restaurant Industry Recovery: February 5, 2021 COVID-19 Membership Update: February 5 Federal Update on Senate Budget Votes from the NRA After a long night/morning, the Senate just concluded its “vote-a-rama” on the budget resolution. Rather than setting policy, vote-a-rama largely consists of symbolic messaging votes. While typically non-binding, they can shed light on Senators’ positions on key policy issues, or attempt to place them on the record in support of a position or approach, which can be highlighted subsequently if they deviate. While there are numerous votes that took place, following are some of particular interest to restaurants: 1/4 RESTAURANTS Act – The Senate passed, 90-10, Senators Roger Wicker (R-MO) and Kyrsten Sinema’s (D-AZ) amendment calling for the creation of a grant fund for food service and drinking establishments affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The strong vote reflected the Senate’s interest in providing targeted grant relief for our industry. We worked closely with the Senators on the amendment and in garnering support for its passage. Additionally, we have collaborated with the Senators and Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) on a unified Senate/House RESTAURANTS Act, which we anticipate being introduced later today in the respective chambers. Minimum Wage – Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) – Ernst sought a vote on her amendment to prevent an increase in the minimum wage to $15/hr. during a pandemic. She spoke about restaurants, child care, and others, in the process, and how a one size fits all wage is the wrong approach, because the wage for NY and CA may not work for states like hers.

Sanders is top draw for undecideds; Palin a turnoff West Long Branch, NJ – With the presidential nominations in place, speculation about potential running-mates has ramped up considerably. The Monmouth University Poll tested 12 possible vice presidential picks – six from each party – and found that most would have no appreciable impact on voter support. Two names do stand out, however: Bernie Sanders, who could attract undecided voters to the Democratic column, and Sarah Palin, who could potentially hurt the GOP ticket. Scores of names have been mentioned as possible running mates for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The Monmouth University Poll decided to test 12 of them – six Democrats and six Republicans – for their ability to attract voters to the parties’ respective tickets. On the Democratic side, only Sanders, Clinton’s primary opponent, registers any notable impact. Overall, 39% of voters nationwide say they would be more likely to vote for the Democratic ticket with the Vermont Senator as Clinton’s running mate compared to 20% who would be less likely to support this pairing. Among those voters who are currently undecided or are leaning toward supporting a third party candidate, fully 50% say they would be more likely to support Clinton if Sanders is her vice presidential nominee and just 16% say they would be less likely to vote for this ticket.
