Bach (1879) Seven Fantasies, Opus 116 (1892) Capriccio in d minor Intermezzo in a minor Capriccio in g minor Intermezzo in E Major Intermezzo in e minor Intermezzo in E Major Capriccio in d minor I N T E R M I S S I O N Two Rhapsodies, Opus 79 (1879, published 1880) b minor g minor 24 Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Opus 2 (1861, published 1862) Playing Brahms! The other day, one of my students asked a fairly innocent question, had I performed all of the works on tonight’s program before? Knowing that quite a number of the Liszt pieces I performed back in October were new, he must have assumed the same for this program. Well, the answer to his question is a resounding: ‘Yes, I have played them all before’! I per- formed everything on this series (minus the two Schumann works on the first program) in a five-concert series of Brahms’s solo piano works in London’s Wigmore Hall in February-March, 1979. Indeed, I had already learned a number of the shorter Brahms pieces in my early teens. And, over the years, I’ve performed the Handel Variations (conservatively) well over fifty times. Tonight’s concert is the fourth of five in the pre- sent series. -

Malcolm Robert Seagrave—American composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher—was born in Tracy, California, on March 30, 1928. His father, Marshall Seagrave, was an accomplished engineer, and his mother, Margaret Seagrave, was a talented violinist. The young Malcolm showed talent for the piano at a very early age. After completing high school, he earned an Associate of Arts degree in music at Stockton College (Stockton, California) in 1948 and then enrolled at the College of the Pacific (today the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California), where he earned the Bachelor of Music degree in 1950. -

Besides, these are perfectly tolerable constraints: that is a question of craft. If one likes it, and if one knows his metier, music is a domain where, more even than elsewhere, the word impossible does not exist in French. -

He learned the piano, organ and cello as a child and then attended the Conservatories Turin and Paris where he studied the cello. He worked as a cellist in the Monte Carlo Orchestra and then at Milan's La Scala. He taught the cello at the St. Petersburg Conservatory for some years and after the Russian Revolution returned to Monaco and became the first director of its École Municipale de Musique. He composed orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso Anna Han BIOGRAPHY CRAIG SHEPPARD was born and raised in Philadelphia. A graduate of both the Curtis Institute and the Juilliard School, his teachers included Susan Starr, Eleanor Sokoloff, Sasha Gorodnitzki and Rudolf Serkin. In London, he worked with Ilona Kabos, Peter Feuchtwanger, and Sir Clif- ford Curzon. In 1972, Sheppard made his début at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Six months later, he won the Silver Medal at the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in England. Living in London for the next twenty years, he performed with every major British orchestra, many on the Euro- pean continent, and those in this country of Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and San Francisco – amongst others - under many promi- nent conductors of the day including Sir Georg Solti, Erich Leinsdorf, Kurt Sanderling, Yehudi Menuhin, Aaron Copland, James Levine, Michael Tilson Thomas, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Andrew Davis, Leonard Slatkin and David Zinman. He also taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. -

The first two (of three) volumes of Années de Pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrim- age) were a direct result of Franz Liszt’s eleven-year romantic attachment to Marie, La Comtesse d’Agoult, a member of the highest echelons of French aristocracy, and the mother of his three children. Her affair with Liszt, com- mencing in 1833, caused a scandal of such proportions that the couple were forced to leave Paris in 1835, absconding first to Switzerland, then to Italy. Following in the footsteps of great writers of the past, their wanderings lasted four years, until they separated in Florence in 1839. By that point, Liszt had composed eight piano pieces for the Album d’un voyageur (Album of a Voy- ager/Wanderer), works to a large extent inspired by Swiss landscapes, with lit- erary references taken from Lord Byron, Sénancour and Schiller, works which were to form the nucleus of the eventual first volume of Années, Suisse (Swit- zerland). -
