Reaching Higher

Sons of Foundation | 2010 Annual Report Foundation

We Are… We are a 501 c (3) charity established in 1966, dedicated to promoting Norwegian heritage & culture to our members, lodges and their communities through scholar- ships & grants and to provide humanitarian relief when natural disasters strike.

Our Passion The people who are associated with the Sons of Norway Foundation are some of the most passionate people you will ever find. This manifests itself in a number of ways, including: • Making higher education possible for individuals & creating educational opportunities • Showcasing Norwegian heritage and culture to wide audiences • Exploring the potential for cross cultural exchange and understanding

Achieving this is no small task, it takes the gifts, participation and contributions of hundreds of individuals and lodges throughout Sons of Norway. Thanks to them we are able to award $100,000 annually in grants and scholarships.

This, in turn, makes a huge difference in hundreds of communities across two conti- nents. Thanks to the efforts of those who support us, communities benefit because the Foundation brings cultural exhibitions, helps local students reach new academic heights and assists community members who have been affected by natural disasters.

It’s also our goal to make the communities we serve a more vibrant place to live and we achieve this by promoting cross-cultural and educational exchanges, preserving Nor- wegian heritage and culture for future generations, encouraging the study of modern Norway and all it is doing on the world stage – diplomacy, world health, green technol- ogy, natural resource management, etc. – and by supporting youth programs in lodges and schools across North America and Norway.

Through our mission we believe the Sons of Norway is making the world a better place and we invite you to join in our efforts by donating you time, talents and money to help us achieve our goals today, tomorrow and for generations to come. For information on donation opportunities go to www.sonsofnorway.com/foundation. Reaching the pinnacle, reaching for the stars, reaching new levels of success, how- ever you phrase it , the Sons of Norway Foundation is reaching new heights.

Our Sons of Norway lodges are reaching new heights in their promotion of Norwegian culture and heritage in their local communities, creating great programs on historic and modern Norway. Examples of 2010 grants include Norwegian music concerts, Scandinavian Fairs, Norwegian genealogy work- shops and a children’s choir trip to Bergen, Norway.

In addition the 2010 Sons of Norway Foundation has helped scholarship recipients reach their educational dreams throughout the U.S. and Norway. This is evidenced by the thanks we receive every day for the opportunities we are helping them experience.

We are volunteering in our local schools to help children reach higher with new experiences and learning opportunities. In 2010 the Foundation funded concerts, barneløpets, books for libraries and hands on enrichment pro- grams supplied by Sons of Norway volunteers. Thanks to the Foundation and its supporters we are laying the groundwork for another generation of children to have a solid understanding of Norwegian heritage and culture by offering camp scholarships and funding study abroad opportunities.

Last, but certainly not least, even our bottom line has climbed to near pre- 2007 asset levels, a very positive sign. With so much accomplished in 2010, it will be no small task to reach even higher next year, which is where you come in. If you’ve given to the Foundation in the past, please continue. It’s contributors like you who make a huge difference every year. If you have not dontated previously, I invite you to do so in 2011. With your help we can reach even loftier goals and continue to reach for the stars.

Vennlig hilsen,

We invite your feedback. Contact us at [email protected] or call Cindy Olson, Foundation Director at 1-800-945-8851. Scholarship Opportunities

“I am very excited to be immersed in Norwegian culture, speak Norwegian everyday and discover life in Norway as a resident instead of as a tourist.

While in Norway I will be participating in a program called Reis! at Rødde Folkehøgskole near Trondheim. In this pro- gram, students research a topic of interest. I plan to explore how Norwegian schools teach the English language, how immi- grants learn Norwegian and about Norway’s education system. As part of my project, I hope to also volunteer as an English tu- tor in a Norwegian grade school classroom.

I am very grateful to the Sons of Norway and the Sons of Nor- way Foundation for their support. I know that this experience as a foreign student in Norway will be a valuable asset when I someday teach immigrant students here in the U.S.”

“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Peter F. Drucker Olivia Lenz Nancy Lorraine Jensen Recipient

“I would like to thank the Sons of Norway Foundation for the Nancy Lorraine Jensen Scholarship that has allowed me to pursue my two passions, Science and Service to my community.

I currently serve as the President of the Pacific University (SPU) chapter of the American Chemical Society, as a member of Lateria (a student community service organization), a member of the Falconettes (a campus women’s group) and as one of the co-service chairs of the SPU chapter of the Ivy Honorary National Mortar Board Society.

I was able to pursue my passion for science by studying the synthesis of ZnO nanowires during my internship at NASA Ames Research Center. Because of this, I decided that I would like a career researching nanomaterial fabrication.

Whenever I have spare time, I also enjoy taking classical ballet classes, a hobby I have pursued since I was young.”

“Success happens when preparation meets opportunity.” Amanda Sorensen Nancy Lorraine Jensen Recipient

“I am is a fourth-generation member of Sons of Norway, Nor- dahl Grieg Lodge 6-052. When I am in California I work with my lodge to serve at the Lutefisk Dinners and participate at the District Kretsstevene at Camp Norge.

I am currently a junior Honors Program Aerospace Engineer- ing major on the Dean’s List at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Uni- versity in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Nancy Lorraine Jensen Scholarship I was awarded from the Sons of Norway Foundation is helping me gain the science, mathematics, and engineering education that I will need to start my own company once I gradu- ate. I want design more efficient and beautiful airplanes that bring the fun back into flying.

I am a member of the national award-winning Eagles Flight Team. This summer I am studying for my Private Pilot’s license. I also serve my Society of Women Engineers chapter as Fund Rais- ing and Conference Chairs.”

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt Anya Zach Tronvold Folk High School Scholarship Recipient

“I am writing to thank you for the help I received from the Sons of Norway Foundation toward my time at Toneheim Folkehøgskole. Toneheim is a music school where, as a harp player, there were many opportunities to get involved. I had the amazing opportunity to take harp lessons in Oslo from two Norwegian professionals as well as ear training classes, music history and guitar.

I arrived one of only six non-Scandinavian students at the school. Gradually I gained more prowess in Norwegian, and learned more about music than I could have ever imagined. I also discovered many things about myself and what it’s like to live on my own. I am so grateful to have had such an incred- ible year, and I know that I am a different and better person because of it.

I had a wonderful experience that I will never forget.

Tusen takk igjen for alt!” Melissa Plakke Astrid G. Cates Scholarship Recipient

“I am a Sophomore at Colorado State University where I am double majoring in Zoology and Biological Sciences. I am a member of the Honors Program and enjoy participating in undergraduate research involving the conflict between humans and elephants in Africa. With my degree I hope to pursue a career in either genetic or conservation research.

In my spare time I enjoy volunteering at the Denver Zoo, read- ing and spending time with my friends and family, whether it be around town or at a Sons of Norway event. Being born and raised in Colorado, I value the beautiful scenery and as such never pass up an opportunity to hike, camp and fish or just be outdoors. I love to travel and hope one day to visit my family in Norway.

Thank you so much again!”

“There is nothing like a dream to create the future.” Victor Hugo Tyler Klingfus Myrtle Beinhauer Scholarship Recipient

“I will be attending my sophomore year of college at the Uni- versity of Minnesota Duluth with a major in Chemical Engi- neering. I am very passionate about the outdoors and hope to someday use my degree to work with environmental technolo- gies and research. Also, I really enjoy being involved in the community and have done many different volunteer projects in both high school and college.

I have taken great interest in my Norwegian heritage and Sons of Norway activities. In the summer of 2007, I was able to travel to Norway with my family to visit relatives and to see the beautiful country. I also skied the Barnebirkie for 10 years, attended Masse Moro Norwegian Heritage Camp for 6 years, returned to Masse Moro for one year as a counselor and have presented my experiences at numerous lodge meetings.” Grant Opportunities

Naeseth Library/Blaine Hedberg “One of our goals for 2010 was to bring news of the Norwegian American Genealogical Center (NAGC) & Naeseth Library to members, friends and prospective members in Texas. It had been close to twenty years since our last trip to visit with Nor- wegian Americans in Texas.

Our seven days in Texas won many new friends for the NAGC and confirmed the close relationship between the Center and its Texas members. This trip and its successful programs would not have been possible without the great support of the Sons of Norway Foundation.

The Board and Staff of NAGC & NL express gratitude to the Sons of Norway Foundation and all those who supported and partcipated in the special outreach effort.” Fjelldal Lodge, 4-543 General Heritage & Culture Grants

Norwegian Everyday Bunad Class “Thank you so much for the 2010 General Heritage and Culture Grant to Fjelldal Lodge. We had so much fun getting together and researching where our families came from and what bunads they would have worn.

Members researched their ancestral family history, ancestral re- gion in Norway and proper Bunad style and created a scrapbook of the information. We then obtained Norwegian woven cotton fabric from the oldest mill in Norway and accessories needed to complete the bunad. This was a week long workshop and we look forward to seeing the new bunads being worn soon. Leif Erickson Lodge, 1-032 Helping Hands to Children Grant

Leif Erickson Lodge 1-032 Parade Float “For the first year with our own float we were able to raise the awareness of Sons of Norway by participating in parades in four communities in Minnesota: Battle Lake, Henning, Parkers Prairie and Vining. We are using the float to involve youth in our lodge, we had young people ages two to sixteen joining with adult members in walking alongside and riding in the float.

We know that the memories that were created by our partici- pation in these Nordic cultural experiences will stay with the children, our members and the communities we visited and help them get close to their Nordic Culture and to Sons of Norway.

Our participation in these events would not have been possible without the generous grant from the Sons of Norway Founda- tion. Mange tusen takk!” Norskfødt Lodge, 1-590 Helping Hands to Children Grant

Troll & Trolldom Program “Jan Smith of Norskfødt Lodge had a great time using the Help- ing Hands to Children Grant from the Sons of Norway Founda- tion to entertain elementary school children in the Morris area. The children loved listening to her tell her stories about Trolls and Trolldoms.

This program was very well received and everyone involved had an amazing time. We would like to say thank you to the Sons of Norway Foundation for helping us to put on such a great pro- gram. We look forward to doing additional community outreach programs in the future.” Vidda Lodge, 4-663 Local Lodge Partnership Grant

Lodge Programming featuring weaving, carving and genealogy “On behalf of Vidda Lodge 4-663, we would like to thank the Sons of Norway Foundation for awarding us a local lodge part- nership grant. We are using these funds to provide interesting and engaging programming for our lodge which in turn creates an active lodge.

Vidda lodge worked with the Meadowlarks Council to bring “Sam Ting” to Crosby, MN. He is a humorous speaker and his presentation entitled “Why wouldn’t a Norwegian want to go green?” He spoke about saving the environment and told Nor- wegian stories.

We had about 155 people attend his presentation at our local school and at the theatre, which was open to the public.

Again thank you!” 2010 Year in Review Sons of Norway Foundation
