Romanian Small Towns Searching for Their Identity
Journal of Urban and Regional Analysis, vol. I, 1, 2009, p.41-53 ROMANIAN SMALL TOWNS SEARCHING FOR THEIR IDENTITY Daniela ZAMFIR, Cristian TĂLÂNGĂ, Ilinca Valentina STOICA University of Bucharest, Romania Abstract: Romanian small towns - urban settlements of less than 20000 inhabitants, having a polarizing function with respect to the socio-economic activities in the deeply rural areas - are considered an interface between rural and urban communities. Determining the identity of small towns is rather difficult, because complex and varied political, social and economic changes occurred in the previous century. Thus, three distinct phases have been established: before 1950 the towns had a rather strong rural character; in 1950-1989 their identity was completely changed under the communist regime; after that, they somehow regained their initial identity (the one before 1950), or promoted it at higher levels. There is a discrepancy between the present stage and that before 1989: the previous identity was conventional and constrained whereas today it develops in a natural process conditioned only by the town itself and by the choice of its inhabitants. Key Words : identity, small towns, functional profile, Romania. Introduction The concept of “identity” is a very complex one. Its approach implies a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of towns and of the historical, socio-economic and political changes which caused their emergence and dynamics. The present paper analyses the numerical and population evolution of the small towns in the interval 1912-2007 and the changes on their functional profile. In our opinion, these topics are the most important aspects in finding the identities of small towns. -
Nitrogen and Phosphorous Excretion Rates by Tubificids from the Prahova

Independentei 91–95, 76201, Bucharest, Romania (*Author for correspondence: Fax: 401-411-23-10; E-mail: [email protected]) Received 11 August 2004; in revised form 19 April 2005; accepted 1 June 2005 Key words: excretion rates, nitrogen, phosphorous, tubificids Abstract Nitrogen and phosphorous exchange at the water–sediment interface is controlled both by complex physico-chemical factors and biological processes. Zoobenthos excretion is one of the most important processes in the mineralization of sedimented organic mater. In polluted freshwaters, tubificid worms are among the dominant components of the benthic community. Rates of ammonium and inorganic phos- phate excretion by tubificids were experimentally assessed. They were related to the tubificid abundance in a stream ecosystem polluted with municipal and industrial wastewater. The relationship between these rates and temperature were investigated within the range of 4–23 °C. Relatively constant excretion rates were obtained for both nutrients in the first 8 h of excretion, ranging between 0.076 and 0.226 lg )1 )1 )1 )1 N mg d.w. h and 0.0065–0.01 lg P mg d.w. h , respectively. Q10 values of 2.52 for ammonium and 1.31 for phosphate were calculated. If we presume that all excreta eventually enters the water column, then we can calculate that these invertebrates potentially add 39.17 mg N m)2 day)1 and 0.49 mg P m)2 day)1. -

Estimation of the Areas with Accelerated Surface Runoff in the Upper Prahova Watershed (Romanian Carpathians)
Estimation of the Areas with Accelerated Surface Runoff in the Upper Prahova Watershed (Romanian Carpathians) Liliana Zaharia1, Gabriel Minea1, Gabriela Ioana-Toroimac1, Ruth Barbu2, Ioan Sârbu1 1University of Bucharest – Faculty of Geography, Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Bucharest, Romania 2University of Bucharest, Faculty of Geography, “Simion Mehedinţi – Nature and Sustainable Development” Doctoral School, Bucharest, Romania E-mail: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This paper aims to identify the areas prone to rapid surface runoff and, consequently, with high potential for flood occurrence. In order to reach this goal we relied on the Flash Flood Potential Index (FFPI), which integrates those physical parameters of the watershed that control the surface flow: rock permeability, soil texture, slope gradient, curvature profile and land use. The integration of these parameters was accomplished in a GIS environment, through multiple operations that included digitization, interpolation, cropping, conversion, classification, reclassification and cartographic algebra. The size of the grid cell was set to 20 (hence, the area of a pixel/cell was 400 m2). Depending on the favorability/restrictiveness of each flow control factor, five classes, numbered from 1 to 5, were established. By adding the specific values of each class with the investigated parameters, we obtained a new grid, called FFPI. This was further reclassified into four classes: very low, low, medium and high. The study area overlaps the Upper Prahova watershed, a region with significant socio-economic importance (especially for the road and railroad transportation, as well as for tourist activities), where floods and other associated phenomena (inundations, landslides) are frequent and may lead to serious damage. -

Romania is a country with a very varied and diverse tourism potential and a landscape consists of 27.91% mountains of total country area, with altitudes between 600 – 2500 m, an average height of 840 m and 10% of the country’s territory above 1500 m (Cernaianu et al, 2017). In Romania the winter sports tourism are focused on the skiing activity and ski resorts. There are some 27 licensed ski areas in Romania with around 80 authorized ski slopes, and a variety of ski lifts, gondolas, chair lifts, skid lifts and cable cars with a capacity of over 35,000 persons an hour serving these areas (Romania National Tourism Master Plan 2007 – 2026). There is heavy demand at weekends during the winter when snow conditions are favorable. Sport event tourism is a huge and growing global industry with important economic implications for both the sport, the event and the impact of travel and tourism related benefits on host destinations (Candrea et al, 2010). The most popular winter touristic destinations in Romania are: Poiana Brasov, Predeal, Sinaia. Previous quantitative marketing research outlined that 45% of tourists are entirely satisfied with the quality of the accommodation units in Braşov city and 37.9% of tourists feel the same way about Poiana Braşov (Candrea et al, 2010). -

Atmospheric Pressure and Its Influence on Tourists and Tourism Activities in the Prahova Corridor
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Directory of Open Access Journals ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND ITS INFLUENCE ON TOURISTS AND TOURISM ACTIVITIES IN THE PRAHOVA CORRIDOR HAVRIŞ LOREDANA-ELENA 1 ABSTRACT. Atmospheric pressure and its influence on tourists and tourism activities in the Prahova Corridor. In the climate literature it is known that the atmospheric temperature directly and permanently acts on the all organisms and all geographical environment components, influencing the wellness of the weather sensitive persons and implicitly the wellness of tourists in this region. In the same time, its evolution is a good indicator in shaping the short and medium term meteorological forecast, considering that the region chosen for research is a very tripper one, especially during the winter season when the atmospheric pressure variation trend is much more pronounced. Within this framework, the present paper tries to develop a climatic diagnosis on the reference climate parameters (annual and monthly average pressure values, seasonal values, minimum and maximum absolute values and their emergence probability but also the non-periodic variability) based on data recorded during 1961-2007 at Câmpina, Sinaia 1500, Predeal, Omu Peak and Braşov weather stations. Keywords: Prahova Corridor, atmospheric pressure, tourism, bioclimatology. 1. INTRODUCTION The tourism, as men outdoor activity, it is greatly dependent by the climatic condition and weather. Considering this correlation between the tourism and climatic condition and although the periodic fluctuations of the atmospheric pressure are almost unnoticeable for the human senses, and the geographical consequences are not visible (Stoenescu, 1951), it keep trace of in these paper on detail atmospheric pressure and its influence on tourists (especially on the wellness of the weather sensitive persons) and implicitly on tourism activities. -
