Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 5 Overview

General

The 3033 Telephone Interconnect provides a robust method of communication between HF and a DTMF-capable public telephone system. A standard Codan 3033 telephone station comprises: • a Codan HF transceiver with system capability (a 2010 RF Unit with a 2030 Junction Box, or a 2012 RF Unit, or a 2110 Manpack Transceiver with an interface adaptor) • an antenna system • an appropriate 12 V DC transceiver supply (supplies transceiver and 3033) • a 3033 Telephone Interconnect with a connection to a DTMF-capable PSTN • a telephone, if the 3033 is used in manual mode

Remote HF transceivers must be Codan transceivers if voice encryption or frequency NOTE hopping is used by the Codan HF transceiver at the 3033 telephone station.

A PC is required to access the web interface for setting up the 3033 and accessing the call log. It may be connected to the 3033 using either of the following methods: • directly, with a crossover CAT5 cable (see Figure 8 on page 26 and Figure 9 on page 27), or • remotely, with two line and two serial cables (see Figure 10 on page 60) The HF users and telephone users are managed separately via the web interface. If required, you can allow or deny access to the 3033 Telephone Interconnect for both types of users (see page 75, Controlling access to the telephone interconnect). You can also restrict the types of telephone calls that an HF user can make through the 3033. For more information see page 70, Setting up HF user access rights.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 17 Overview

Compatibility

Regional settings and telephone line configuration files

You can set up your 3033 for local telephone line impedance and voltage values. The 3033 comes with some standard pre-set telephone line configuration files, one of which may be suitable for your region. If the pre-set telephone line configuration files are not suitable, you must gather call progress tone and level information for the type of PSTN in your region or PABX that you are using. This information may be found on the , or in the documentation provided with the PABX. This information is then manually loaded into the 3033 via the web interface. For more information see page 87, Setting up the telephone line.

If you use a PABX with your 3033, the call NOTE progress tones for the PABX may differ from those of your region.

RTU–292 Compatibility Mode

If your users are accustomed to the commands used to operate a JPS RTU–292, you can set up the 3033 Telephone Interconnect to operate in an RTU–292 Compatibility Mode. When this mode is set, the 3033 uses a set of voice prompts that mimic the functionality of the RTU–292 Radio/Telephone Interface. The 3033 also accepts RTU–292 commands directly. For information on these commands see Table 22 on page 135.

18 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Overview

Operating modes

Automatic

When the automatic operating mode is selected using the Mode button on the front panel of the 3033, the unit does not have to be manned. It answers telephone calls from the PSTN and patches them, under instructions from the telephone user, to the HF user. HF callers to the telephone station include telephone call information in the Phone call made from the Codan HF transceiver.

Manual

When the manual operating mode is selected using the Mode button on the front panel of the 3033, the unit must be manned. Calls to the 3033 from the PSTN are answered using the connected telephone. HF calls are established with the remote HF transceiver using the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033. When both parties are on line, the Connect button is pressed to connect the parties. Similarly, HF calls to the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 are answered manually by the operator. The required telephone call is placed using the telephone connected to the 3033, then when both parties are on line, the Connect button is pressed to connect the parties.

Off

When the off-line mode is selected using the Mode button on the front panel of the 3033, the 3033 cannot be used to connect any calls between the PSTN and HF.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 27 Installation

Switching on the telephone interconnect

The 3033 reads important default status information from the Codan HF transceiver. The startup process of the 3033 takes slightly longer than the transceiver, therefore, if the two items are powered from the same source, the transceiver enters the default operating mode in time for the 3033 to read the values. The LCD on the 3033 is blank during its one-minute initialisation period.

If you switch off the Codan HF transceiver, you should check that when it is switched on, it returns to the expected default operating state, NOTE that is, the expected scanning status, or expected secure/hopping status (if fitted). If necessary, restart the 3033 so that it reads these values.

Setting up the telephone interconnect

Setting a station address for the telephone interconnect

The station address for the 3033 is used by HF callers to contact the 3033. This information is also passed to a remote HF transceiver during a Selective call from the 3033 to identify the station that made the call.

If you do not set a station address for the 3033 in the web interface, the 3033 uses the Codan NOTE HF transceiver’s self address, as set in its Control List. It is recommended that you set different addresses for the 3033 and the Codan HF NOTE transceiver. In this way each item may be used independently.

28 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Installation

If you intend to use the 3033 in manual mode, the station address of the 3033 is not used. HF calls are made to the Codan HF transceiver, then manually connected via the 3033 to an established telephone call. If these HF calls are Selective calls, then the Codan HF transceiver requires a self address.

To set up a station address for the 3033: 1 Log into the web interface at admin or installer level (see page 63, Logging into the web interface). 1 Select Advanced... in the basic menu, then General Configuration. 1 In the Station Address field, enter the address(es) that you want HF users to call when they use the 3033. Use this format: aaaa[@][,bbbb[@]] For example:

To set the station Enter... address...

1234 1234

1234 for use in the 1234@AlphaComms network called AlphaComms

1234 for use in the "1234@Alpha Comms" network called Alpha Comms (that is, the name includes a space)

Multiple addresses 1234@ALE,"9876@Codan Selcall"

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 29 Installation

For information on the network selection NOTE process used by the transceiver see page 101, Networks and channels.

If you are entering a station address to be used in: • a Codan Selcall or Open Selcall network, enter up to 10 digits • an ALE/CALM network, enter up to 15 upper-case characters/numeric digits, or a combination of both

For more information on address NOTE requirements see the documentation provided with your Codan HF transceiver.

1 Scroll to the bottom of the page, then click Save Configuration.

Setting the VOX levels

The VOX levels vary from region to region, depending on the quality of the infrastructure. When the VOX levels are set correctly, the Codan HF transceiver PTTs when voice is detected from the 3033, and returns to receiving when the voice is no longer detected, and the VOX hang time has passed. If the VOX levels are set incorrectly, then the Codan HF transceiver may PTT and remain in the transmit state due to background noise.

To set the VOX levels: 1 Place a telephone call to the 3033, then follow the voice prompts to make a manual voice call to the Codan HF transceiver. 1 Monitor the PTT LED on the 3033. When the PTT LED is on, the 3033 and the HF transceiver are transmitting.

30 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Installation

When the PTT LED is off, the 3033 is ready to receive from HF. 1 Speak into the telephone, taking note of what happens to the PTT LED. 1 Log into the web interface at admin or installer level (see page 63, Logging into the web interface). 1 Select Advanced... in the basic menu, then General Configuration. 1 Scroll to the VOX Configuration table. 1 In the On Level field, adjust the value in 10 dB steps until the Codan HF transceiver begins transmitting on a minimal voice signal from the telephone. The PTT LED is on when the transceiver is transmitting. You may set a value between –100 (minimum) and –2 dBm (maximum).

If the VOX is not switching when a voice signal is present, decrease the value in the NOTE On Level field. For example, change it from –30 dB to –40 dB. Background noise from the telephone end NOTE may affect operation of the VOX.

1 Click Save Configuration after each adjustment to activate the change in the 3033. 1 Re-test the VOX level. 1 In the Off Level field, set the value to 5 dB less than the value in the On Level field as a starting point. For example, if the On Level is set to –40 dB, set the Off Level to –45 dB. You may set a value between –100 and –2 dBm. 1 In the Off Level field, adjust the value in 1 dB steps until the Codan HF transceiver stops transmitting when the voice signal ends. The PTT LED is off when the transceiver is receiving.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 31 Installation

1 Click Save Configuration after each adjustment to activate the change in the 3033. 1 Re-test the VOX level.

If the PTT occasionally activates due to NOTE background noise, increase both the On Level and Off Level values in small steps.

1 In the VOX Hang Time field, enter the length of time that you want the 3033 to hold the VOX after a voice signal ends. 1 Click Save Configuration.

Checking the telephone line configuration file

The default settings for telephone line configuration are based on Australian requirements. Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 35 Making and receiving calls

General

The 3033 Telephone Interconnect can operate in automatic or manual mode. When it is set up for automatic operation, the 3033 automatically answers calls made to it from HF or a telephone, and processes these calls with the information provided. Its behaviour is controlled by call progress tones, DTMF tones, transceiver commands, and specific timeouts. There are protocols for ending calls immediately, but if these are not used, the 3033 returns to the on-hook status after an inactivity timeout. When the 3033 is set up for manual operation, it does not answer calls made to it from HF or a telephone. For information on manually connecting a call see page 47, Connecting calls manually.

Secure mode

Due to the encryption algorithm, secure communication is only possible between Codan HF transceivers that use the same encryption NOTE module. Therefore, remote transceivers that are used for secure operation must be Codan HF transceivers. VP-116 encryption is not supported across the NOTE 3033.

36 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Making and receiving calls

If the communication network of Codan HF transceivers associated with the 3033 has the voice encryptor option enabled, you can use this feature over the HF part of the communication. When you make an HF call to the 3033, and security is enabled for your station address pattern (see page 70, Setting up HF user access rights), secure is automatically switched on in the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 during the call initiation. Therefore, before commencing the HF call from the remote transceiver, you should go secure, go to secure standby, then initiate the call. The calling transceiver automatically switches from secure standby to secure when it receives call tones from the transceiver connected to the 3033. For voice encryption modules in which you are able to select a specific key as the seed for encryption, the secure key within the secure index selected on the remote Codan HF transceiver must match the secure key within the secure index nominated in the web interface of the 3033.

The secure index set up in the 3033 must be identical to the current secure index selected in CAUTION the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033. If your voice encryption module does not NOTE support multiple secure keys, do not nominate a secure index in the web interface.

Some voice encryption modules support the use of a PIN during a secure session. If a PIN is nominated in the web interface of the 3033, this identical PIN must be used by remote HF users.

If your voice encryption module does not NOTE support a PIN during secure sessions, do not nominate a secure PIN in the web interface.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 37 Making and receiving calls

Voice encryption may also be switched on by the telephone user via the call options menu. The telephone user may change the secure index and the secure PIN for the current call, if these features are supported by the voice encryption module. The remote HF user must change to the same secure index and secure PIN.

Changing the secure index and secure PIN for a NOTE call does not change the secure index and secure PIN set in the web interface.

Frequency hopping

Due to the frequency hopping algorithm, secure communication is only possible between Codan NOTE HF transceivers that have the frequency hopping option fitted.

If the communication network of Codan HF transceivers associated with the 3033 has the frequency hopping option fitted, you can use this feature over the HF part of the communication. Frequency hopping is switched on by the telephone user via the call options menu. The telephone user can change the hop plan number for the current call. The remote HF user must change to the same hop plan.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 53 Managing the telephone station

Planning considerations

Telephone users

Telephone users call the 3033 Telephone Interconnect. The 3033 commands the connected Codan HF transceiver to make an HF call to a remote HF transceiver. In this way, the telephone user may contact: • a remote HF transceiver (see Figure 1 on page 7), or • another that uses an HF trunk as the bridging link between PSTNs (see Figure 2 on page 9) By default, any telephone users that call the 3033 must enter the access code 1234 to proceed with further calling activity. This access code provides traceability of the call in the telephone call log. If you require more detailed usage information in the call log, set up each telephone user with a unique access code (see page 65, Setting up telephone users). If you need to change the access code for the default telephone user or any other telephone user see page 66, Editing the details for a telephone user.

HF users

HF users call the 3033 Telephone Interconnect. The 3033 makes the call to a telephone. You can use the web interface to manage a selection of users with similar call requirements as a group, providing control over their usage of the 3033.

54 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Managing the telephone station

Call groups

Call groups are the types of telephone calls that may be made via the 3033 Telephone Interconnect, from HF to a PSTN. The default call groups in the 3033 are listed in Table 7. For help with setting up call groups see page 67, Setting up HF user call groups.

Table 7: Default call groups

Name of call group Description

Emergency Only Minimum legal requirement.

By default, the telephone number pattern is set for Australia, and of America, that is 000, 999, 112, 911. If the NOTE emergency number for your country is different, you must change the telephone number pattern for the call group.

Unrestricted There are no restrictions on the types of telephone calls that may be made.

Telephone number patterns

Telephone number patterns define the types of telephone numbers that are permitted within a call group. You can use a range of variables and wildcards to broadly define a pattern. Each pattern is entered on a new line. For help with setting up the telephone number pattern see page 67, Setting up HF user call groups. For example, for local calls within your region, you may permit users to dial any 8-digit number. This has a telephone number pattern of xxxxxxxx. You may also permit users to call a 1800-prefixed 10-digit number. This has a telephone number pattern of 1800xxxxxx.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 55 Managing the telephone station

Station address patterns

Station address patterns define which HF stations are permitted to use the 3033. You can use a range of variables and wildcards to broadly define a pattern of HF users. If the self address of an HF transceiver calling into the 3033 matches a station address pattern, then calling activity may continue in accordance with the call groups allocated to the group of HF users. If you want to bar a particular remote HF transceiver from using the 3033, you can do so by adding the specific address to the bottom of the list, but without assigning any call groups. For more information see page 76, Controlling access of HF users. The default access rights for HF users permit all callers to use the 3033.

Security

The secure index and secure PIN features are NOTE only supported in certain voice encryption modules.

You can use the voice encryptor with the 3033. Secure communication is only possible between Codan HF transceivers that use the same encryption module.

56 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Managing the telephone station

Some voice encryption modules support the use of a PIN during a secure session. If a PIN is nominated in the web interface of the 3033, this identical PIN must be used by remote HF users. Voice encryption may also be switched on by the telephone user via the call options menu. The telephone user can change the secure index and the secure PIN for the current call, if these features are supported by the voice encryption module. The remote HF user must change to the same secure index and secure PIN.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 97 Advanced setup of the Codan HF transceiver

Channel names

You can use a DTMF-capable telephone to command the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 to select a specific channel. Only numeric digits can be entered using the telephone.

The only restriction placed on a channel name used in the HF telephone communication NOTE network is that it must include a numeric suffix in the name.

To select a particular channel, all you need to enter at the telephone is the exact numeric suffix that identifies the channel. If you have channel names in your existing networks that have the same numeric suffix (such as Codan 01, Codan 02, Night 01, Night 02), these channels are easily used with the 3033. To use these existing channels you must define a specific channel prefix (see page 99, Defining a channel prefix).

The RS232 [15way] Startup entry

The Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 has an entry in the Control List that enables you to set up attributes for the port to which the 3033 is connected. These attributes are read on startup. In a system-capable NGT series Transceiver, this entry is called RS232 15way Startup. In a system-capable 2110 series Manpack Transceiver, this entry is called RS232 Startup.

98 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Advanced setup of the Codan HF transceiver

Defining a channel prefix

In the following discussions, you must log into the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 as administrator to see the Control List. For information on logging in as administrator see the documentation provided with the Codan HF NOTE transceiver. Alternatively, you can use NSP to program the entry in the Control List. For information on programming with NSP see the on-line help provided with the software.

To define a channel prefix: 1 Go to the RS232 [15way] Startup entry in the Control List. 1 Access the entry so that you can edit it. 1 Enter the channel prefix that you want to define in the following format: CHANPREFIX " " [RemoveZeros]

If the prefix contains a space to separate it from the numeric sequence (for example, CAUTION Codan 01), you must include quotes around the prefix and space in the chanprefix command. NOTE This command is not case-sensitive.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 99 Advanced setup of the Codan HF transceiver

For example:

Networks and channels

In the following discussions, you must log into the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 as administrator to see the Network List and Control List. For information on logging in as administrator see the documentation provided NOTE with the Codan HF transceiver. Alternatively, you can use NSP to program the Codan HF transceiver. For information on programming with NSP see the on-line help provided with the software.

A station address may be allocated to a specific network or to all networks. Therefore, if you want to restrict 3033 traffic to a number of channels only, create a network for the particular calling system you want to use, add the channels to this network only, then allocate the station address of the 3033 to this network only (see page 28, Setting a station address for the telephone interconnect). When you are prompted to select a channel for an HF call, the Codan HF transceiver automatically selects a Codan Selcall network that contains this channel. If the channel is contained in more than one Codan Selcall network, the Codan HF transceiver selects the Codan Selcall network that appears first in alphabetical order in the Network List.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 101 Advanced setup of the Codan HF transceiver

Self address of the Codan HF transceiver

The self address of a Codan HF transceiver is the unique identifier for the transceiver that is used by other HF transceivers to make a call to it. If a remote HF transceiver needs to be called via the 3033, the self address entered into the remote HF transceiver must be numeric and between 3 and 15 digits long (up to 10 digits only for a Selcall network). If your existing HF communication network of transceivers uses other alphanumeric address formats, you do not have to change these. Instead, you can set up the Address List of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 with entries that automatically make a call to the specified HF transceiver with the alphanumeric address. When you make an Address List call from a telephone via the 3033, specify the entry number in the Address List corresponding to the HF transceiver that you want to call. For information on setting up the Address List see page 103, Address List entries in the transceiver connected to the telephone interconnect.

136 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Appendix F—Support for non- Phone call transceivers

If your HF communication network includes transceivers that do not have support for the Phone call type (Telcall in older Codan HF transceivers), you can still make Selective calls through the 3033 by setting up a wildcard address to receive these HF calls through a Selcall network.

Setting up a wildcard address

To set up a wildcard station address for the 3033: 1 Log into the web interface at admin or installer level (see page 63, Logging into the web interface). 1 Select Advanced... in the basic menu, then General Configuration. 1 In the Station Address field, enter the wildcard address. Use this format: aa..

You must also set up a specific station address for making calls from a telephone NOTE to an HF transceiver (see page 28, Setting a station address for the telephone interconnect).

1 Scroll to the bottom of the page, then click Save Configuration.

Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide 137 Support for non-Phone call transceivers

Setting up a manual hangup capability

To set up a manual hangup capability for remote Selcall-only transceivers: 1 Go to the Address List of the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033. 1 Create an entry named QD 99 for a Phone call to a blank telephone number.

Making an HF call to a telephone using a wildcard address

When the 3033 telephone station receives a Selective call through a Selcall network to the wildcard address, the 3033 ignores the first two digits, then reads the next two digits as the abbreviated number for the telephone number stored in the speed dial entries in the 3033.

To make an HF call using the wildcard address from a remote transceiver that does not support Phone calls: 1 Start a Selective call to the wildcard address of the 3033, replacing the wildcard digits (..) with the abbreviated number stored in the speed dial pages. For example, if you set up a wildcard station address in the 3033 of 12.., and a remote HF transceiver sends a Selective call in a Selcall network to 1250, the 3033 dials the full telephone number corresponding to Abbreviated Number 50.

For more information on speed dialling see NOTE page 83, Setting up speed dial telephone numbers.

138 Telephone Interconnect 3033 User Guide Support for non-Phone call transceivers

To manually hang up the 3033 from the remote HF transceiver: 1 Start a Selective call to the wildcard address of the 3033, replacing the wildcard digits with 99. For example, if you set up a wildcard station address in the 3033 of 12.., and a remote HF transceiver sends a Selective call in a Selcall network to 1299, the Codan HF transceiver connected to the 3033 returns to scan and sends a hangup to the 3033.
