Dennis Kennedy Founder & CEO, National Diversity Council

Greetings,

Welcome to the 4th Annual Louisiana Women’s Conference! Our theme this year is “Finding Health, Wealth, and Balance in 2012.” With sessions dedicated to discussing how women can reach the highest points of success in their personal and professional lives, we can celebrate the idea that women can have it all! Today, we want to be sure that you take away skills that are essential to achievement.

“Finding Health, Wealth, and Balance in 2012” will give women who call Louisiana home the opportunity to network with other successful and powerful females in their community. We want to give our attendees the tools to maximize their pro- fessional development, while still placing great emphasis on personal aspects of life such as marriage and family. An open dialogue with speakers from all different backgrounds is important in order to teach and encourage women to fi nd their own sense of balance. Our speakers today will inspire you to reach new heights in your career, bring light to personal aspects of a woman’s life, and encourage new perspectives. Lastly, we want to put the state of Louisiana on a pedestal in terms of corporate development. Everyone in attendance today deserves acknowledgement for continuing to defi ne and expand the role of a working woman in this state and in our world.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors for their fi nancial support. Make sure to take note of who they are and support them whenever possible. Without their help, there would be no Louisiana Women’s Conference. Second, I want to say “Thank You” to the speakers who made the commitment to be here today. Many have traveled in order to participate in this conference and I greatly appreciate their support. Finally, I would like to thank the organizers of the conference for a job well done.

Maya Rodriguez Breakfast

Maya Rodriguez joined the Eyewitness News team as a general assignment reporter in April of 2007. Like millions of people across the country, she watched the events of unfold on television and decided to come here to report on the community’s recovery. “I was so moved by what I saw happening here,” she says. “The entire staff of WWL-TV, despite dealing with their own personal losses during Katrina, showed their unwavering commitment to journalism. I am so honored to be a part of this amazing team.” Since joining Eyewitness News, Rodriguez has reported stories from across the New Orleans metro area, many of them relating to post-Hurricane Katrina recovery issues. She also traveled to New York City for an in-depth report on successful crime fi ghting efforts there and followed a New Orleans delegation to Washington D.C., as they addressed members of Congress about post-Katrina concerns. In 2009, Rodriguez was selected by the East-West Center for a journalist exchange fellowship to Korea. While on the Korean peninsula, she reported on a pending free trade agreement and its potential economic effects on New Orleans. Rodriguez also traveled to the Demilitarized Zone to report on the U.S. military presence, amid heightened tensions between North and South Korea. Previously, Rodriguez was a reporter for WINK-TV and WXCW-TV, the CBS and CW duopoly in Naples and Ft. Myers, Florida. While there, she covered several active storm seasons, which included Hurricanes Charley, Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Prior to that, she was a general assignment reporter for KAMR-TV and KCIT-TV, the NBC and FOX duopoly in Amarillo, Texas. During her time there, she covered storm chasers during severe weather, reported on devastating wildfi res in Arizona and followed the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2002 Winter Games, as it traveled across several states. Rodriguez began her career as a special projects intern for WTVJ-TV, the NBC station in Miami, where she worked with producers on long-format and investigative stories. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in New York and graduated with honors from Florida International University in Miami, with a bachelor’s degree in communications. A New York City native, Rodriguez also grew up in Miami and Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. In addition to her Hispanic roots, she is also of Czechoslovakian descent. She speaks Spanish and French, and is currently studying Mandarin Chinese.

Sheba Turk Luncheon

Sheba Turk is honored and excited to jump into her new role as Traffi c Reporter for the Eyewitness Morning News. Born and raised in Gentilly, Sheba graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Her pride and joy was musical theatre. “I miss doing theatre, but now I get to be part of a live show again. It’s funny because, in many ways, they are very similar to me.” After high school, Sheba spent the fi rst half of her college career studying creative writing at NYU. “I have tried living other places, but I always seem to fi nd my way back home. New Orleans is defi nitely in my bloodstream.” Sheba came back home and graduated from the University of New Orleans with a bachelor’s degree in English and concentrations in creative writing and journalism. Her love of writing led her to the world of journalism. In September 2011, just a few months after graduation, she joined WWL-TV as an associate producer for the morning news. She spent her extra time shadowing reporters, and when the traffi c report position came open, she jumped at the opportunity to work in a position in front of the camera. “I never imagined that I would have a chance to be a reporter at WWL-TV this early in my career. It is still a bit surreal to be a part of the show that defi nes mornings for so many in New Orleans,” she said. When she’s not working, Sheba says she’s always on the hunt for a new Chinese or sushi restaurant. She also spends a lot of time with her dog. “More than anything, I am grateful to be here. I look forward to updating my New Orleans friends with the information they need to know to make their morning commute an easier one.”
