  • A Study of the Pilgrimage Tourism of Kashmir
1 A STUDY OF THE PILGRIMAGE TOURISM OF KASHMIR ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF doctor of $f)tlQSfopf)j^ IN COMMERCE By SHAHNAWAZ AHMAD DAR UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF DR. S.M. IMAMUL HAQUE READER DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY AllGARH (INDIA) 2008 ABSTRACT Tourism is a phenomenon which was a strong motive behind the movement of people in ancient time and is still the strongest motive for causing the movement of millions of people across the regional, national and international boundaries. Travel which initially started with the intention to fulfil the religious/spiritual/pilgrimage needs of a person is again becoming the largest motivator to undertake travel. India recorded 4.43 million international tourist arrivals and over 400 million domestic tourists in 2006. In the same year, Indian tourism generated US$ 6 billion foreign exchange and contributed 5.83% to the GDP. Tourism to India means the third largest foreign exchange earner and one of the largest employment generating industry. India is gifted by a miniature India in the form of State of Jammu and Kashmir. The State comprises three divisions namely, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Each division has its own unique climate, geographical setting, religious beliefs, food pattern, art, culture and traditions and is full of tourism assets which are also distinctive. Jammu division is a Hindu dominant area. It has innumerable temples spread through out its length and breadth. Jammu is also called as ''City of Temples'". Ladakh, also called as the ''Land of Lamas", is a mountainous country. It is dominated by Buddhist population.

  • The Mysticism and Glory of Sufism and Kashmiriyat: Origins, History and the Politics Behind It
The Mysticism and Glory of Sufism and Kashmiriyat: Origins, History and the Politics behind it Introduction “Insaniyat, Jamhuriyat, Kashmiriyat”, or “Humanism, Democracy and Kashmiriness”, with these words the former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee described his doctrine towards preserving and fostering the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Jammu & Kashmir (FirstPost, 2018). Twenty years later, this paper will aim to untangle the origins and meanings behind this statement, taking the reader few centuries back, when the mystical current of Islam, called Sufism, was setting foot on the Indian subcontinent, preaching the teachings of love, compassion, humanity and promoting an ideology where caste hierarchy or an individual’s financial standing did not matter. It will explore in-depth the construct and design of this spiritual Islamic philosophy and theology, which has exercised significant influence over the development of Islamic politics and society, and the diverse expression of religious devotion via shrines (Elias, 1998). On that basis, it will discuss the evolution of the so-perceived sacred collective identity in the Kashmir Valley of Jammu & Kashmir, called ‘Kashmiriyat’, which manifested a tradition of syncretism, which flourished in the region owing to the mutual efforts of both Muslims and Hindus towards coexistence, communal harmony, hospitality, non-violence and mutual accommodation. It will follow the evolution of this notion and its subsequent demise through observing the unholy alliance of organized fundamental interpretations of religion and gun culture, which have led to the weeding out of the remnants of this humanistic culture of Kashmir with its roots deeply embedded in the hitherto secular and glorious ancient past.

COLLECTIVE MEMORY AND NARRATIVE: ETHNOGRAPHY OF SOCIAL TRAUMA IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR by TAMANNA MAQBOOL SHAH B.A., University of Pune, 2000 M.B.A., D.A.V. University, 2004 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF SCIENCE Department of Sociology College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2012 Approved by: Major Professor Laszlo Kulcsar Copyright TAMANNA MAQBOOL SHAH 2012 Abstract Kashmir has been in the throes of a civil war since late 1989. The armed conflict between Islamist militants and the Indian security forces has consumed over one hundred thousand civilian lives. Communities have been displaced from their centuries’ old heritage. Almost every household has lost a dear one to the bullet of either a security man or a militant. Deeply entrenched patterns of militarization of the Kashmiri society encompassing a range of material and discursive processes have produced horrific social suffering for local communities in the ostensible rhetoric of protecting national sovereignty. In a situation where Kashmiris have been identified as threats to national order and incarcerated, literally and figuratively, as prisoners of the state, they try hard to retain their sense of history since awareness of history enhances communal and national identity. However, in a society under siege the only tools to retain a sense of ‘social self’ and ethnic collectivity, are through narrative telling and recall to memory that help live trauma collectively to give vent to their plight. This thesis attempts to broadly review the problem in Kashmir and then describe in detail various techniques that Kashmiri society employs like commemoration, narrative telling, oral history, symbolism, theatre, language, and memory etc.

  • Survey Report on Village, Zachaldara, Part X-C, Series-8
CENSUS OF INDIA, 1981 PARTX-C Series 8 Jammu and Kashmir Survey report on village ZACHALDARA (A village re-study) (Tehsil·Handwara, District Kupwara\ Report by H.L. Kalla (Deputy Director, Census Operations) Jammu & Kashmir Supervised by Abdul Gani (Joint Director, Census Operations) Jammu & Kashmir FOREWORD The Indian Census has a long tradition of providing population figures separately for rural and urban areas. There has been a growing need for such a dichotomous data especially after independence to formulate different policies and programmes for planned development especially in regard to rural areas. There has been, however, a dearth for data relating to the way of life of the rural masses for making cross-cultural and cross-regional comparisons to understand the imbalances in the level of socio-economic development achieved by the people living in Indian villages situated in different geographical areas. To bridge this gap a socio-economic survey of about 500 villages from different parts of the country was taken up for study by the Census Organisation in connection with the 1961 Census. The villages thus studied were selected on· purposive sampling basis in order to give representation in the sample to villages with diverse socio-economic characteristics. These included multi-ethnic villages, tribal villages, villages inhabited by potters, fishermen etc., villages situated near urban centres and those situated in remote areas where people had been living in a state of isolation and continued economic and educational backwardness. It was envisaged that this study would provide bench-mark data on the living conditions of the people inhabiting different geographical areas of the country under diverse socio-economic conditions.
