GARDENER’S DELIGHT GLOUCESTERSHIRE GARDENS - SNOWDROP TOUR Staying at The Holiday Inn, Gloucester-Cheltenham

New for this year is our early spring jaunt where we visit Colesbourne Park said to be ‘England’s greatest Snowdrop Garden’. We visit Cotswolds Farm Gardens set around a historic Arts and Crafts house and finally we visit Painswick Rococo Garden where at this time of year the gardens come to life with an abundance of Snowdrops. There to give us the joyful news, to let us all know, that Spring is on its way.

Our base for the tour is the Holiday Inn Hotel Gloucester- Cheltenham which is conveniently located on the outskirts of Gloucester’s city centre and the ideal location for our tour. The hotel offers a well appointed bar, the Traders restaurant and Spirit Health Club with a fully equipped gym, swimming pool and sauna. All rooms are air-conditioned with all the facilities you’d expect from a Holiday Inn, including en-suite with colour t.v., telephone, courtesy tea tray and high speed internet access.

Fri: Depart from the Macclesfield area calling for coffee en-route to Cirencester where we take our lunch break. We then venture to Cotswold Farm Gardens at Duntisbourne Abbots – The clipped yews surround the neat, rectangular pond, the Cotswold terrace walls and the subdivisions of the garden all speak of plants and materials that were the hallmark of the Arts & Crafts movement. At this time of year the garden is resplendent in Snowdrops. Late afternoon we take the short journey to our hotel, dinner and evening at leisure.

Sat: This morning we visit the City of Gloucester where you will have time to visit the historic docks, museum and shops. Just after lunch we head west to Colesbourne Park for their display of snowdrops. Ample time to wander the grounds at leisure and visit the tea rooms.

Sun: After a leisurely breakfast we head for the Painswick Rococo Gardens. The Rococo Garden has one of the largest naturalistic plantings of snowdrops in the country and is in many ways the spiritual home of Galanthus Atkinsii. After lunch we head for home, making a quick comfort stop en-route to arrive in the Macclesfield area around tea time.

SPRING INTO SIDMOUTH –EARLY SPRING TIME IN DEVON Staying at The Royal York and Faulkner Hotel, Sidmouth

Sidmouth is probably the most unspoilt resort in the country and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. Quiet, unhurried and unspoilt, ideal for that relaxing get away, especially at this time of year with spring well on its way and the delightful gardens full of daffodils, narcissi, crocus’s and more. In the resort you will find cliff path walks, safe beaches and shops that still offer the personal service and friendliness of a country town. Our Hotel is situated on the seafront on Sidmouths’ Esplanade and lies handy for all the resort amenities. The Royal York and Faulkner Hotel has been in the same family for 50 years and was the first Hotel to be built in Sidmouth. The Hotel boasts 3 lounges, a cocktail bar, health complex with spa pool, sauna and solarium, short mat bowling and a full size snooker table. Forde Abbey is a privately owned former Cistercian monastery, the Grade I listed house is still lived in and is set in a 1,600 acre estate that includes a fabulous garden. Today we visit the gardens, we have ample time for lunch in the tearoom followed by an afternoon stroll through the acres of spring bulbs. Mon: Day at leisure to explore the delights Sidmouth has to offer. Tues: Today we visit the friendly little market town of Honiton famous for lace and pottery. Market day today. We spend the morning in Honiton, we then have a scenic run calling at Otterton Working Mill. The mill is set beside the River Otter in one of East Devon’s loveliest coastal valleys and offers craft shops, a bakery and café for that afternoon cuppa and perhaps a cream tea. Wed: After breakfast we depart and head for home calling at Clarks Shopping Village in Street, time for a browse and early lunch. We then continue our journey north making a quick comfort stop en-route to arrive in Macclesfield late afternoon/early evening

PEEBLES, EDINBURGH & THE SCOTTISH BORDERS Staying at The Peebles Hydro Hotel, Peebles

Our tour to north of the border takes us to the pretty town of Peebles, nestled within an area of outstanding natural beauty. A Royal Burgh since 1152 and the rule of King David I, Peebles has for many years been a market town cherished by locals and visitors alike for its picturesque and unspoilt character. Situated just a short stroll from the village is The Peebles Hydro Hotel and our base for the tour. The Hydro is set on a hilltop in 30 acres of grounds. There are 132 bedrooms, some of which boast beautiful views. The hotel is very spacious and grand retaining many of its original Victorian features. All bedrooms are en-suite with modern facilities. The hotel boasts a health spa with indoor pool and jacuzzi, pleasant restaurant, bar and lounge with occasional evening entertainment. Sun: Depart the Macclesfield area calling for coffee en-route to the town of Moffatt, time for lunch and a stroll. We then continue onto the hotel to arrive in time for a swim before dinner. Mon: After a leisurely breakfast we take the short journey to Dawyck Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s finest arboreta, with an abundance of exotic and native plants and a new award winning visitors centre. We spend the morning at the gardens and then return to Peebles for the afternoon, giving you time to have lunch and perhaps visit the local museum. Tue: Our excursion today takes us to Edinburgh where we meet a guide for a tour of this splendid City. We then take the short journey to Leith where we have time for lunch before our visit to ‘The Royal Yacht Britannia‘, where we discover what life was like on board the Queens floating Royal residence. To complete the visit why not partake of afternoon tea on board in the Royal Deck Tea Rooms. W ed: A relaxing day today taking us firstly to Abbotsford House, the house built and lived in by Sir Walter Scott where we stop for morning coffee at the Visitors Centre. You then have the option of staying to visit the house and gardens or take the short journey into Melrose with time for lunch and a stroll around the pretty town or to visit the Harmony and Priorswood Gardens (£5.00 NT members free). DOWNTON ABBEY & OXFORD Staying at The Hilton Hotel, Newbury

Fascinated by TV’s ‘Downton Abbey’ then why not join us on our short break and discover where it was filmed. We venture to Bampton in the Cotswolds the location of Downton Village and to the fabulous Highclere Castle, Downton Abbey itself, one of England’s most impressive inhabited residences. We follow in the footsteps of the show’s cast, explore the beautiful grounds and uncover the Castle’s fascinating history and its links to ancient Eygpt. Our tour is based at the Hilton Hotel, Newbury, located on the edge of the historic market town of Newbury, just off the motorway and close to glorious countryside. The hotel boasts a fully-equipped health club and indoor pool. The Space, where the bar, lounge and restaurant merge into a cohesive space with the restaurant offering traditional favourites and healthy options. All bedrooms have recently undergone a complete makeover and now have 32” LCD TVs, cosy Serenity beds, soft lighting and stylish furniture, en-suite bathrooms and tea and coffee making facilities. Sat: We depart Macclesfield in the morning calling for coffee en-route to Broadway where we stop for lunch at this delightful Cotswold village before we continue onto Bampton, the village which was used for many of the outdoor locations of Downton Abbey. After a short stay we head to Newbury and our hotel for the next two nights. Sun: After breakfast we head into Oxford, the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. You have the day at leisure to explore the city’s grand colleges, visit one of its many museums, stroll along the river or simply relax in one of the many or cafes. We return to the hotel in time for a dip in the pool before dinner. Mon: now for the highlight of our tour, we visit Downton Abbey or rather Highclere Castle to see where the star-studded cast act out the fortunes of the fictional aristocratic Crawley family and their servants. Wander the rooms as the knowledgeable guides reveal the house’s many treasures. You then have time to explore the vast grounds designed by Capability Brown, including the herbaceous borders and serpentine paths of the Secret Garden. Finally, don’t miss the Egyptian Exhibition, commemorating the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter, well worth seeing and entrance is payable to the exhibition on the day. New for this year is our mini-break to the Great Malvern Spring Gardening Show. Set amongst the beautiful Malvern Hills, the RHS Malvern Spring Gardening Show is a show to delight all. The show brings together inspirational ideas, practical tips and makes for a fantastic visit. During our short break we also have a unique asparagus experience through the Vale of Evesham. Tue: A spectacular day, today we travel over the Kyles of Bute, for our short ferry crossing over to the Isle of Bute. We spend time in the Victorian seaside resort of Rothesay, and then visit the impressive Gothic mansion of Mount Stuart. Thu: Firstly to Aberglasney one of the county’s most exciting garden restoration projects. Spectacularly set in the beautiful Tywi Valley the garden has been transformed into a plantsmans’ paradise. Just after lunch we take a step back in time and visit the Gwili Railway for a leisurely trip on a steam train.

Once the home to the Royal Navy and birthplace of many of Britain’s finest ships of the age of sail, the most famous was HMS Victory. The dockyard has more than 100 listed buildings with galleries, museums, ships, and attractions including the RNLI’s national collection of lifeboats and has been the film location for many films and TV series including ‘Call the Midwife’. The name ‘Peninsula’ stems from the location of the hotel on a small peninsula with a wonderful view over Grand Havre Bay from the front of the hotel and a lovely sheltered Guernsey beach at the edge of 5 acres of private landscaped gardens. The Lake District is often referred to as England’s greatest beauty spot and what a good time to visit when the air is crisp and clean. William Wordsworth devoted his whole life to exploring and describing the beauty of this region of astonishing natural beauty, which he called ‘the loveliest spot man hath ever found’. The Lake District is a National Park where villages and towns have kept their particular character and culture for all to experience. Our base at Grange over Sands makes this region so easy to explore at this peaceful time of year. Our hotel for the short break is the Netherwood Hotel, a former stately home, where at this time of year the scene is set ready for Christmas, where beautiful decorations adorn every public room. The hotel is set in extensive gardens in a stunning location, with dramatic views across Morecambe Bay and just a short walk from Grange-over-Sands town centre and the delightful Victorian promenade. A daily changing menu of local produce is served in the Hazelwood restaurant, there are two very pleasant lounges, the Jacobean bar and an on-site spa and wellness centre with indoor swimming pool, sauna and hot tub. All bedrooms boast en-suite bathrooms flat screen t.v. hairdryers and courtesy tea trays. The hotel does have a lift. A super hotel in a super location. Sun: We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee en-route to the SouthL akes and Ulverston to the Dickensian Christmas Festival. There is also a fabulous Christmas market, with lots of unusual gifts and festive food. Mid-afternoon we take the short journey to Grange over Sands and our hotel. Dinner and evening at leisure. Mon: After a leisurely breakfast and a read of the Sunday papers we board the coach for a scenic run up the side of Coniston Water and into the pretty village of Hawkshead for lunch. Time for a stroll and lunch before we continue our scenic run calling at Brockhole, the Lake District’s Visitors Centre, time for afternoon tea and then back to the hotel. Tue: This morning once your luggage has been placed on the coach you have the opportunity for a stroll around Grange over Sands, the coach will drop you off at the top of the hill and pick you up at the bottom, giving you time for morning coffee in between. GENERAL CONDITIONS These conditions apply to any excursion or tour advertised in this brochure or otherwise, providing it includes no overnight accommodation. Tickets are issued by Roy McCarthy Coaches only.

TICKET Every Passenger must possess an authorised ticket which must have been paid for in advance of travel. The ticket is non transferable. The ticket will be evidence that the passenger accepts these booking conditions. Tickets are valid only for the date and journey stated thereon.

CANCELLATION If you wish to cancel, the Company is under no obligation to make any refund, but providing you cancel no later than FIVE days before the proposed journey we will without obligation refund any money paid less £2.00 per passenger cancellation and less any cost of admission, meals, etc. if such proves irrecoverable by us. The company may change any tour route, itinerary or excursion, but will not change the departure time or the general destination or purpose without notice. In the latter instance the customer may cancel up to three days before departure to obtain a full refund of all monies paid, which shall be the limit of the Company’s liability.

RESPONSIBILITY / LIABILITY We do accept liability to clients for negligence of our employees, however we do not accept liability for the actions or omissions of those involved in your travel arrangements, over whom we have no direct control, and who are not employed by us as our employees. The company shall not be liable for loss or additional expense caused by delay resulting from events beyond its control. We reserve the right at any time to withdraw any excursion on which few bookings have been made.
