Grisham's 'Time to Kill' Coming to Broadway - NYTimes.com JUNE 25, 2013, 3:46 PM Grisham’s ‘Time to Kill’ Coming to Broadway By PATRICK HEALY A stage adaptation of “A Time to Kill,” John Grisham’s legal thriller about a young white lawyer defending a black man for a revenge murder in Mississippi, will open on Broadway in the fall, the producers said on Tuesday. The play is the first adaptation of a novel by the best-selling Mr. Grisham for the theater; the writer is Rupert Holmes, a Tony Award winner for best book and best score for “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” The novel was made into a 1996 film starring Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson. The play’s producers, Daryl Roth and Eva Price, have indicated in investment documents that the show will cost $3.6 million on Broadway. Casting will be announced soon; in the premiere of the play in 2011 at Arena Stage in Washington, Sebastian Arcelus (“Elf”) played the lawyer. That production received mixed reviews. The play is to begin preview performances on Sept. 28 at the Golden Theater and open on Oct. 20. The director will be Ethan McSweeny (the 2000 Broadway revival of “Gore Vidal’s The Best Man”), who staged the play at Arena. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/25/grishams-time-to-kill-coming-to-broadway/?pagewanted=print[6/26/2013 9:51:02 AM] Escaping a Broken Marriage in a Ruined Town - The New York Times June 25, 2013 THEATER REVIEW Escaping a Broken Marriage in a Ruined Town By CATHERINE RAMPELL If you describe the plot of “Rantoul and Die” to a friend, as I did, you will probably find yourself muttering, “but it’s still really funny, I swear.” And really, I swear, this tale of a sour, violent marriage is funny — darkly, darkly funny.

The film is produced by Williams and her husband, Independent Spirit Award winner and Sundance alum Neal Dodson (Margin Call). MEATS is an exploration of the ethics of meat-eating and the fears inherent with becoming a parent. In the short film, Williams plays Lane, who has hired a whole-animal butcher named Chris (played by real-life master butcher Giancarlo Sbarbaro), to educate her on how to responsibly break down a lamb and use every part. Upon arrival, Lane is simultaneously disgusted and mesmerized by the carcass in front of her. As Lane liberates the meat from the bone, she also frees a whole new side of herself, revealing humor, pain, connection, and a newfound mother-to-be. CounterNarrative Films presents MEATS. The cinematographer is Roman Vasyanov (Triple Frontier, Fury, Sundance alum with The East and Charlie Countryman). The editor is Cecilia Delgado. Color is by Roman Hankewycz (Sundance alum with Sound of Silence and Equity, among others) from Harbor Picture Company. Sound design is by three- time Academy-Award nominee Steve Boeddeker (All Is Lost, Black Panther, Sundance alum with I Origins, among others) at Skywalker Sound.

  • Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television
Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.

  • Cast & Crew August 2005
Issue No.85 Single Copy $2.50 August, 2005 CAST & CREW “The Source For Theater Happenings” ANOTHER GREAT SUMMER AT MONMOUTH WITH THE BARD (AND OTHERS) By Muriel Kenderdine The Theater at Monmouth, designated The Shakespearean Theater of Maine by the State Legislature some years ago, is halfway through its summer season, but because it’s a repertory company, you can still see all the shows between now and August 27, and then for more fun, hang around for the fall production of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM! This year Shakespeare is represented by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, directed by Producing Director David Greenham, and starring Artistic Director Sally Wood as the non- conformable Kate and Tim Davis-Reed as the “ shrew tamer” Petruchio, who has “come to wive it wealthily in Padua”; and, for the first time, LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST, directed by Bill Van Horn, with some interesting gender switches! Other plays in the repertory are Frank Galati’s Tony Award-winning adaptation of John Steinbeck’s THE GRAPES OF WRATH, directed by Jeri Pitcher, with Janis Stevens as Ma Joad and Richard Price as young Tom Joad; and David Hirson’s LA BETE, directed by Lucy Smith Conroy, with Dustin Tucker as the (seemingly) obnoxious Valere with the “mile-long” (and, in Dustin’s hands, hilarious) monologues. However, says Producing Director David Greenham, “I’m really passionate about a good strong company of creative artists being together and doing great work – so it’s more about the group than about the plays for me, because I think you need a great group to do great theater!” So, again for this Equity company, now in its 36th season, Dave, along with Artistic Director Sally Wood, has gathered in the usual number of AEA artists; other seasoned professionals both from away and local, for acting, design, and technical support; and talented newcomers continuing to add to their experience.

  • HAMLET ROCK OPERA MAJOR PRODUCTION HISTORY EN (1).Docx
HAMLET MAJOR PRODUCTION HISTORY After ten years of holding a top position in pop/rock music, Janek Ledecky was mixing his sixth solo album in 1997, when the producer of the album, Martin Kumzak, suggested the idea of a musical version of Hamlet. Janek thought „why not?” before realizing just how crazy the idea was. Many composers around the world have tried to compose an opera or musical of Hamlet, but all have failed. When no producer would touch this project, Janek built his own theatre in Prague and produced it himself. He’d used his last dime, even sold his motorcycle, but somehow the craziness paid off. In November of 1999 the musical Hamlet opened in the brand new Kalich Theatre and ran an unprecedented 650 performances! It went on to play more than 150 performances in Slovakia. The first attempt to introduce Hamlet Rock Opera to American audience started with readings at Leonia Theater in NJ in April 2002 and then in September 2003 at Lamb’s Theater on Broadway with such stars as Louise Pitre from Mamma Mia, John Hickock and Delisco from Aida and Jeremy Kushnier from Rent as Hamlet. George Harvilla, a poet awarded by the 2000 Hemmigway’s annual poet’s award, was brought on to do the English lyrics or better „transpoetrisation”. The show was awarded by TRU organization as one of the best readings of 2003. But the most important result was that Robert Johanson, respected theater director, decided to join the team. He worked as Artistic Director for the most prestigious Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey for almost twenty years adapting and directing more than 150 plays there, on Broadway, NY City Opera and in other US theaters.

What is the true meaning of justice? That is the question posed to audiences in A Time to Kill , the world premiere and first stage adaptation of a novel by John Grisham . By special arrangement with Daryl Roth and adapted for the stage by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood ), A Time to Kill brings the heat of the Deep South to Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Directed by Ethan McSweeny (Broadway’s Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man”), A Time to Kill runs May 6-June 19, 2011 in the Kreeger Theater. “Producing a work that asks big questions about how we live in the world takes a dynamic team,” says Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith . “Rupert Holmes and Ethan McSweeny are an ideal duo to take on this powerful courtroom drama. Daryl Roth, a committed and bold producer, brought this potential project to Arena over a year ago, and we have been thrilled to work together on the birth of this new play.” The Cast of A Time to Kill features Sebastian Arcelus as the defendant’s attorney Jake Brigance (recently seen on Broadway starring in Elf and Jersey Boys ), Dion Graham as Carl Lee Hailey (Marcus Gardley’s On the Levee at Lincoln Center), Rosie Benton as Jake’s youthful law clerk Ellen Roark (seen at Arena last season in Stick Fly and in Broadway’s Accent on Youth ), Erin Davie as Jake’s wife Carla Brigance (Broadway’s A Little Night Music ) and Brennan Brown as Rufus Buckley (The Persians in New York, dir.

Forgotten musicals! One of the best things about the theatre scene is that worthy shows that may not have succeeded the first time around for one reason or another are often brought back! Second chances are a big part of theatre. When was the last time a "flop" movie or TV show was remade 20 years later with a new concept or edited script? (And as long as we're getting started here, let me make it known that I don't like to use the word "flop". I prefer "underappreciated musical. It's more P.C.) Of course, when a theatre fan hears "forgotten musical", they may think of shows like Merrily We Roll Along or Mack and Mabel... Subways Are For Sleeping or Smile... For this column, we're going to go way more "forgotten" than that! Here are 10 buried treasures of musical theatre. Shows that either were never licensed or never got cast recordings. Shows that were on Broadway or at least announced for Broadway, but that never quite took off. Here are 10 fascinating musicals that you really may have forgotten... which deserve a second look! 1.
