McCormick, Dean School of Education DEDICATIONS I dedicate this dissertation to my parents Roland and Sylvia who taught me to dream big and to pursue those dreams. To always believe in myself and that only self could ever keep me from success. To my sister Claire the one person who really knows me, whose strength, strong beliefs, faith, pride and unconditional love keeps me ever strong. To my sons Kamil and Hassan, whose awesome talents inspired me, fulfill me and empower me. To my partner Sandra, whose love, confidence, and support have been steadfast and never ending. I am grateful for our yesterdays, for our today’s and our tomorrows. To my step-sons Christopher and Manny, for their on-going love and support .To Judy Robison my life long friend whose love and support is a true foundation in my life. To Barbara Dreyer, my spiritual guide, who has helped me to find the courage to fail and keep going, to see the good when it is right here, and the ability to turn failure into a lesson which has liberated my soul and my spirit. To Diane Campbell a friend and colleague whose encouragement and support in our movement towards the liberation of people with disabilities has been unending. To Emma J. Williams, who believed in my abilities enough to walk me to STCC and enrolled me in my first college course. Finally, to the participants whose trials and victories are now part of our story thank you all. In Memory My dearly loved brother Petie who love is always with me on all the paths I take in life. To my beloved friend Patricia [Trish] Silver whose constant vigilance, iron will, and awe-inspiring beliefs helped to move me into a place where I could believe getting my doctorate was a possibility. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my chair, my advisor, Barbara J. Love, for her many years of thoughtful guidance, support, leadership, personal instruction and accomplishments over the years which have inspired me and motivated me to reach higher. I would like to thank Pat Griffin who has stuck with me from the beginning of my journey and provided me with honest feedback and personal guidance. A special thank you to my village Jo-Anne Vanin, Diane Campbell, Aquila McCants, Margarita Jones, Jo-Anne Provost and Larissa Hopkins, all who have provided me with physical and emotional support, accommodations (the way they should be provided), and endless care along my journey. For attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young – let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance – Proverbs 1:2-5 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understand, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure…. Proverbs 2:1-4 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair-every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you Proverbs 2:9-11 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around you neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Proverbs 3:1-3 v ABSTRACT A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE EXPERIENCES OF HELPING PROFESSIONALS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES FEBRUARY 2010 MADELINE LORRAINE PETERS, B.S. UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST M.Ed., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ed.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Barbara J. Love The purpose of this study is to explore the extent, to which professionals in helping professions (PHPS) with learning disabilities are able to name the support, services, and assistance that they require to successfully engage in the full range of activities for their daily living. Additionally, the study explores how PHPS describe their experiences with support, services, and assistance available to them. The study was conducted using a qualitative, phenomenological in-depth interview methodology. The study sample consisted of 10 helping professionals with learning disabilities that work in helping professions. Data was collected using audiotaping of interviews and field notes. Audio tapes were transcribed and data from the transcriptions was analyzed for this study. Nine major themes emerged from the analysis of the study data the themes were disability, daily living, oppression, self-esteem, self-reflection, creative management, creative management adaptive behaviors, services and support. Key findings from the study suggest that professionals in helping professions (PHPs) with learning disabilities are creative, strong willed and persevere despite the odds. Most of the PHPs went through vi school without accommodations and relied upon their own abilities and determination to pass. Two out of the ten PHPs were diagnosed with learning disabilities when they were children. Three of the PHPs were born before learning disabilities were formalized and labeled as a disability. The data suggests that people with learning disabilities need support, services and assistance in all areas of their daily living. Recommendations for change are provided for addressing the problematic themes that emerged from the data. vii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ................................................................................................ v ABSTRACT ....................................................................................................................... vi LIST OF TABLES ........................................................................................................... xvi CHAPTER 1. • Singing While Female: a Narrative Study on Gender
SINGING WHILE FEMALE: A NARRATIVE STUDY ON GENDER, IDENTITY & EXPERIENCE OF FEMALE VOICE IN CIS, TRANSMASCULINE & NON-BINARY SINGERS by Felix Andrew Graham Dissertation Committee: Professor Hal Abeles, Sponsor Professor Jeanne Goffi-Fynn Approved by the Committee on the Degree of Doctor of Education Date 13 February 2019 Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Education in Teachers College, Columbia University 2019 ABSTRACT SINGING WHILE FEMALE: A NARRATIVE STUDY ON GENDER, IDENTITY & EXPERIENCE OF FEMALE VOICE IN CIS, TRANSMASCULINE & NON-BINARY SINGERS Felix Andrew Graham This study explored the personal narratives of six AFAB (“assigned female at birth”) singers – three cis and three trans/non-binary performers of varying ages, ethnicities and locales – to understand how their experiences informed their musical, vocal and gender identities and shaped their musical and vocal lives. Using semi-structured interview process, the singers recounted their memories and understanding of significant events in their development, and together, each singer and I explored those recollections through a process of collaborative self- exploration. Emerging themes from those narratives underscored the need for further investigation into the intersection of AFAB voice, singing and gender, as both existing literature and the results of this study suggest a deeper understanding of the issues around gender socialization, normative expectations and voice is ii necessary to appropriately and effectively prepare singers at all levels of their musical and vocal education. Study results found that there are many sources of socially-mediated influences which shape AFAB singers’ development of self, their individual and social identities, and their perceptions of their voice – particularly in the context of normative expectations that define gender and gender identities.

  • Political Commentary in Black Popular Music from Rhythm and Blues to Early Hip Hop
MESSAGE IN THE MUSIC: POLITICAL COMMENTARY IN BLACK POPULAR MUSIC FROM RHYTHM AND BLUES TO EARLY HIP HOP James B. Stewart "Music is a powerful tool in the form of communication [that] can be used to assist in organizing communities." Gil Scott-Heron (1979) This essay examines the content of political commentaries in the lyrics of Rhythm and Blues (R & B) songs. It utilizes a broad definition of R & B that includes sub-genres such as Funk and "Psychedelic Soul." The investigation is intended, in part, to address persisting misinterpretations of the manner in which R & B influenced listeners' political engagement during the Civil Rights- Black Power Movement. The content of the messages in R & B lyrics is deconstructed to enable a fuller appreciation of how the creativity and imagery associated with the lyrics facilitated listeners' personal and collective political awareness and engagement. The broader objective of the essay is to establish a foundation for understanding the historical precedents and political implications of the music and lyrics of Hip Hop. For present purposes, political commentary is understood to consist of explicit or implicit descriptions or assessments of the social, economic, and political conditions of people of African descent, as well as the forces creating these conditions. These criteria deliberately exclude most R & B compositions because the vast majority of songs in this genre, similar to the Blues, focus on some aspect of male-female relationships.' This is not meant to imply that music examining male-female relationships is devoid of political implications; however, attention is restricted here to lyrics that address directly the relationship of African Americans to the larger American body politic.

  • Undoing Race, Poverty, and Violence in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
© COPYRIGHT by Calenthia S. Dowdy 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DEDICATION To the youth of the world, “Small acts joined together become a movement. When people talk governments have to listen” (unknown) “The struggle of the Black people of Brazil is an aspect of a much larger struggle: the struggle of the Black people of the world” Lélia Gonzalez (1985) YOUTH, MUSIC, AND AGENCY: UNDOING RACE, POVERTY AND VIOLENCE IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL BY Calenthia S. Dowdy ABSTRACT This work focuses on the intersection of youth, their music and their agency, all of which interact to shape identities and create social change in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Music as media activism serves as backdrop, narrative, response, and counterpoint rhythm to the interlocking systemic violence(s) affecting favela youth. Identity issues around race, poverty and violence are the central focus as Brazil’s homicide rates are some of the highest in the world with much of it concentrated in Rio and perpetrated by the state against youth of color. In 1993 rampant violence reached a climax as poor black and brown youth were being murdered daily in Rio’s streets. The city’s image of paradise on earth, and Brazil’s self-narrative of racial democracy were suffering. Musical genres of funk and hip-hop proliferated in Rio’s favelas facilitating life stories told by youth of color. Lyrics of racism, chronic poverty and violence surfaced in resistance to imposed constructions of blackness, space, and worth. In dialogue and resistance, youth design alternative worldviews and identities while performing grassroots participatory citizenship.

They’re so pretty. They have little check marks. I’m going to show you how to rip it up today. Alright, here’s what I want to talk about. First, let’s talk about the problems that you guys are struggling with, that we’re all struggling with. There is this sense – I was just talking about this with one of my friends – that as I get more successful in my business, as I create more success all around me in the amount of money that we make, the number of employees that we have, the business that we have, I feel like more often, people project onto me this idea of busy-ness.

  • Mindful Words: How Do Our Stories Change When We Read About Mindfulness?
Mindful words: How do our stories change when we read about mindfulness? A narrative inquiry Julia Watkin A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Education School of Education Victoria University of Wellington 2018 Abstract This narrative inquiry tells the stories of four women who read an online blog about mindfulness for three weeks and shared their reflections of the experience. It investigates the role that reading plays in the development of mindfulness—a process that has not featured previously in the research literature. The women in this study were recruited via social media, and all were motivated to learn more about mindfulness and how it could have a positive effect on their daily lives. Data was collected via questionnaires on their understanding of mindfulness and their state of mind prior to, and following the completion of, the project. The women also submitted written reflections, based on their reading and experience of each blog post. Analysis involved coding the data and forming it into individual narratives, written in their own words. The narratives were then deconstructed to investigate their association to the transformative learning process—perspective, experience, reflection, meaning making, and interpretation. The results showed that the women did, indeed, have transformative learning experiences, although the sustainability of such change needs further investigation. Despite limitations, these stories suggest that reading about mindfulness deserves a higher profile—and that the use of a digital platform to host written mindfulness content has the potential to positively affect a wide audience. Keywords: mindfulness, reading, transformative learning, perspective, experience, reflection, meaning making, interpretation, well-being.
