Fossil hunting on a buggy ride, Prefecture The northern Kansai area is dotted with plenty of unexplored areas which are seeped in millennia of history. Long before civilization blossomed in this part of ancient Japan, the land was home to prehistoric life. Head to Kyotango – lovingly named “Kyoto by the Sea” – for a fossil-hunting experience like no other. Venture into a prehistoric canyon with your family to excavate 16 million-year-old plant fossils that are preserved in the area.

The fun Shiroi Koibito cookie-making course is popular with adults and children alike. Tuna farming experience, Prefecture Tuna lovers will find a unique fish feeding experience in Kushimoto, the first place in the world to successfully raise tuna in farm. Observe in awe as hundreds of huge Pacific bluefin tuna – at 3m, they can weigh up to 200kg! – swim around the large enclosure as you hand-feed them rice cakes from the safety of a boat. After the feeding session, conclude the experience with a taste-testing of some tasty tuna back on land!

Tottori Nijisseiki Pear Museum, Prefecture With its crisp texture and sublime juiciness, the Asian pear is one of the most delicious of fruits, and the king of these is the Nijisseiki. The Tottori Nijisseiki Pear Museum – home to the largest Nijisseiki tree in Japan – is an homage to its largest producer, . In addition to learning everything together about the king of pear through films and exhibits, you can also sample three varieties of Tottoriʼs pears and treat yourselves with their famous pear soft-serve ice cream.
