Beer in hand, he entered the tent for the awards ceremony and was accorded a standing ovation by fans and competitors alike. He had just blazed through 18 holes of golf in a tourney record 63 that carried him from a four-stroke deficit to his first triumph in this amateur classic after six tries. He ripped apart the 6,526-yard course with six birdies and an eagle in the final round.
