Date JjiMZ^kA- ^,/»^' ABSTRACT An examination of Samuel Johnson*s essays and his tragedy, Irene, and his Oriental tale, Rasselas, reveals that his concept of womanhood and his views on the education of woman and her role in society amount to a thorough-going criticism of the established views of eighteenth-century society. His views are in advance of those of his age. Johnson viewed the question of woman with that same practical good sense which he had brought to bear on literary criticism. It was important he said "to distinguish nature from custom: or that which is established because it was right, from that which is right only because it is established." Johnson thought that, so far as women were concerned, custom had dictated views and attitudes which reason denied. -

'···, CAREER AND IMAGE '",,, " Thesis Approved : --- §~6/.Adviser ~- ~~ Dean of the Graduate College ii PREFACE In this thesis I have avoided as much as possible two almost irresistible paths that tempt many write,rs inquiring into the life and works of Samuel Johnson. The "literary gossip" surrounding and pene trating every aspect of the personalities, social lives, and works of Johnson and his circle is fascinating reading; moreover, the relation ship of Johnson to his household, the Thrales, the Burneys, and James Boswell, to name only a few may draw the attention indefinitely. Another equally tempting avenue for many is the founding of the print ing trade in eighteenth-century London, but bibliography is a special ized, lifetime study. I mention Johnson's circle and publishing concerns only as they illustrate the friendship and professional association of the Strahans and Johnson. Although I offer evidence to explain James Boswell's apparent slighting of the Strahans, this paper does not join the recent attacks upon Boswell's great biography. I shall demonstrate through a study of biographies, diaries, letters, and other papers of Johnson and his contemporaries that William Strahan and later his son, George, were of major importance in Johnson's life and works during the author's life time and extended their influence beyond his death in the publications of his works and biographies that they commissioned, I express gratitude to my professor and adviser, Dr, Loyd Douglas, for introducing me to Samuel Johnson, the author, and for encouragement and advice in continuing the research and the writing of this paper. -

Basker uring a sabbatical year in 1993–94, I noticed for the frst time a strange footnote in the frst edition of Boswell’s Life of Johnson (1791) that Dpiqued my interest in the question of Johnson and slavery.1 When I discussed it with Walter Jackson Bate a few weeks later, he ofered energetic encouragement, which helped decide me to pursue the subject in depth.2 A few essays followed and evolved into a book-length project on which I am now working, under the title Samuel Johnson, Abolitionist: Te Story Boswell Never Told.3 Te rationale for that subtitle will become self-evident, I hope, in the course of this essay. I propose to illuminate selected moments in Johnson’s lifelong opposition to slavery, particularly those that are minimized or missing altogether in Boswell’s Life of Johnson. Ultimately, I want to ofer a new angle of vision on Johnson, one that does a couple of things for us as students of his life and work. -

The Laureates’ Lens: Exposing the Development of Literary History and Literary Criticism from Beneath the Dunce Cap. Doctor of Philosophy (English), December 2015, 225 pp., references, 199 titles. In this project, I examine the impact of early literary criticism, early literary history, and the history of knowledge on the perception of the laureateship as it was formulated at specific moments in the eighteenth century. Instead of accepting the assessments of Pope and Johnson, I reconstruct the contemporary impact of laureate writings and the writing that fashioned the view of the laureates we have inherited. I use an array of primary documents (from letters and journal entries to poems and non-fiction prose) to analyze the way the laureateship as a literary identity was constructed in several key moments: the debate over hack literature in the pamphlet wars surrounding Elkanah Settle’s The Empress of Morocco (1673), the defense of Colley Cibber and his subsequent attempt to use his expertise of theater in An Apology for the Life of Colley Cibber (1740), the consolidation of hack literature and state-sponsored poetry with the crowning of Colley Cibber as the King of the Dunces in Pope’s The Dunciad in Four Books (1742), the fashioning of Thomas Gray and William Mason as laureate rejecters in Mason’s Memoirs of the Life and Writings of William Whitehead (1788), Southey’s progressive work to abolish laureate task writing in his laureate odes 1813-1821, and, finally, in Wordsworth’s refusal to produce any laureate task writing during his tenure, 1843-1850. -

In eighteenth-century Britain, many aristocrats studied music, participated as amateurs in musical clubs, and patronized London’s burgeoning concert life. Richard Fitzwilliam, Seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion and Thorncastle (1745-1816), was one such patron and amateur. Fitzwilliam shaped his activities – participation, patronage, and collecting – in a unique way that illustrates his specialized tastes and interests. While as an amateur musician he sang in the Noblemen’s and Gentlemen’s Catch Club (the premiere social club dedicated to musical performance), he rose to the highest level of patronage by spearheading the Handel Commemoration Festival of 1784 and serving for many years as a Director of the Concert of Antient Music, the most prestigious concert series in Georgian Britain. His lasting legacy, however, was his bequest to Cambridge University of his extensive collection of art, books and music, as well as sufficient funds to establish the Fitzwilliam Museum.
