To be considered for selection all applications MUST contain:  A fully completed Tasmanian State Service Application for Employment form  A resume which will outline such areas as employment history, education and qualifications, professional affiliations, relevant training and developmental history as well as any other information that may be deemed relevant by the applicant  A statement that fully and individually addresses each of the Selection Criteria for the position

How to address the Selection Criteria: Any position within the State Service has a position description which outlines the duties of that particular role and will also contain a number of Selection Criteria. The selection criteria are used to test an applicant’s suitability for the position they have applied for. Therefore any questions asked at an interview will be written to test one or more of the Selection Criteria. When completing an application for a position it is necessary then to write a statement that fully and individually addresses each of the Selection Criteria for the position applied for. Applicants should individually dot point each criterion and write their statement under that point. Applicants should read the duties of the position and Selection Criteria carefully and relate the duties to the Selection Criteria, to determine the major factors of each criterion that need to be addressed. When addressing the Selection Criteria applicants need to demonstrate their claims as to why they meet the Selection Criteria and should consider such things as their relevant work experience, education, training and other qualifications, skills and abilities, personal qualities, examples, achievements and any other information deemed relevant. It is not sufficient to simply claim that you meet a criterion. Here are some tips on how to address the selection criteria: - Use positive words and comments. - Be clear and concise, use quality rather than quantity use dot points if necessary. - A poor example on addressing a criterion in relation to teamwork may be “I believe I work well within a team………” A better response may be to start with “I have the proven ability to work within a team because ……” and continue to expand by outlining your experience as a team member as well as giving examples of any training received or examples of achievements relating to teamwork. - Check that you haven’t undersold or oversold yourself. - Check that you have actually addressed the criteria. - Have someone else proofread your application for content and typographical errors.

Referees: Applicants should provide at least two referees. When selecting referees applicants should select a referee who can best comment against the selection criteria and who are preferably a current and/or immediate past supervisor. Nominated referees should be contacted by the applicant prior to being nominated to ensure their willingness to provide comment, provide them with information about the position applied for and forewarn them that they may be contacted by the selection committee.
