I had the pleasure of attending the first screening outside of Japan in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on January 31, 2015. Since there has been no review so far, and the soundtrack has been looping on my headphones for almost a month, I believe it's time for me to step up and write the first (and my first) review on MyAnimeList. Hopefully without any spoiler (but, I'll correct a few details from the summary - don't worry; nothing spoiler). HISTORY 9/10 The story when Marnie was there based on the novel of the same name by Joan G. Robinson. Anna, the main character, has no friends, suffers from asthma attacks, and has a talent for sketches. She is quite closed, rarely shows emotion and is suspected of depression. After suffering a severe asthma attack, it is concluded that she must live in the country for a while, away from pollution. The pace of these events is quite fast, but the continuation has a great pace. As you've probably read from the resume, she begins to communicate with a mysterious girl, Marnie. As you look, pay attention to the expressions and interactions between the two girls. Interaction, subtle changes in expression, and strange cases that don't quite make sense make history. The expectation that the story will unfold, not paying attention to it, and without thinking about the plot, will make for itself a much less pleasant experience. The pace is excellent, the story is great, and the plot is amazing - but don't expect an action-packed panties shot Film. It's a story about adolescence, friendship, connection and mystery; and that's just what's in its purest form. ART 9/10 I could sum up as a typical studio Ghibli. If you don't know what that means, shame on you. To design everything from character expression, to the medium and little decorations in the rooms sublime. The attention to detail is extremely high, you can take pictures of the landscape or indoor room (stuffed with decorations) and get what looks very similar to the environment and art shown in the cinema. As I mentioned in this story, especially the expressions deserve great praise. A lot of attention and detail has entered into this and you can see what a huge amount of experience and hand-drawn scenes provides. SOUND 10/10 This shouldn't be a surprise because of my previous statement continuously listening to the audio track for almost a month, but the sound is top notch. Like other Ghibli films, background music fits perfectly into the atmosphere and complements the mood and environment. At the end of the story, in the credits, once you have experienced the mood and growth of the characters, the ending of the theme Fine on the Outside Priscilla An begins to play. I can't begin to describe how perfectly tuned this mood is at the end of the trip; it complements the whole story, and even feels that it is part of the story. If you've listened to it before, the meaning and feeling will change completely. The sound was excellent, and Priscilla Ahn's album compliments the film filled with great songs. Don't listen to it before you've seen the movie though, as many of the songs on this album actually tell parts of the story! OVERALL 10/10 It should come as no surprise, I really, really enjoyed the movie. It's a great movie worthy of being a film produced by Ghibli Studios, and if the worst thing is happening - a great final film to be produced by them. A month before watching the film, I can draw an honest conclusion; When Marnie was There is now my favorite movie Ghibli. I hope to see the movie again soon and hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. 1 of the 1 episodes seen by SanaeK10 (All Reviews) 116 people found this review useful In a total of 5 Story 7 Animation 8 Sound 6 Character 5 Pleasure 5 This review contains minor spoilers. The final film of Ghibli is not easy to give a definitive opinion of the matter for a long time, I eventually decided to award the average score to it. If you want me to give a completely spoiler-free verdict on whether to give this movie a look, I'd say if you're into a slowly relaxing movie, it might satisfy you. Otherwise you can give it a pass. Funny, the film has a good average bit and a very strong climax that is unfortunately weakened by a very weak beginning and mediocre and ending that delay to them to welcome. Although, I'll go into that finer detail as we approach the basic review proper. Now, before I start, like Ghibli standards, the quality of art and animation is excellent and very easy on the eyes. Stage views and backgrounds relax in their own way, and each scene is enough in its own way when it conveys the emotions that the scene brings to the audience. Unlike most Ghibli movies, this film has very minimal (if at all) fantastic elements in it, making for very groundless, nonetheless relaxing images throughout the film. Now about the story itself. Omoide is not Marnie's adaptation when Marnie was there, and for the most part, he follows the book quite closely, although some aspects of the book are carved for the purposes of time. However, personally I felt that some parts of the beginning of the film had to be shortened in order to speed up the pace. It takes a good 40 minutes before Marnie appears on screen proper, while before that, we get an idea of Anna's life that seriously overdue his welcome. It should take no more than 15 minutes to convey your situation and predicament to the viewer, but the film moves at such a slow pace that one honest becomes bored of waiting for something to happen. Speaking of which, Anna, especially her earlier characteristic, felt weak and unsympathetic. Her character honestly bugged me, I get Ghibli wanted to make us feel bad for her, but I honestly don't understand this girl at all. She rejects all possible opportunities to make friends with extras, but still suddenly develops a connection with Marnie out of nowhere. She neglects to ask important questions, despite her doubts about the situation. It's also strange and painfully funny that she finds herself unconscious in the middle of the night in random places, but no one raises the alarm or finds anything suspicious with her. Without spoiling much of the film, the middle part of the film is competent and better developing than the beginning. Hints and foreshadowing on the main plot twist are placed sparingly, but clear enough to discover so that as the climax approaches, the plot twist and change of tone do not come across as brash or sudden. And the climax is done so strikingly well you can actually sympathize and feel bad for Anna. The relationship between Anna and Marnie, that is the core of the story, is done quite well (except for their first meeting). It's cute and heart-warm and really has a nice warm and fuzzy feel to it. However, (despite Ghibli claiming otherwise), I still don't see their relationship anything but a (one-sided, maybe) novel, especially after the revelation later in the story. ending however, when the whole story goes back to the mess Pace. The story somehow feels the need to explain its plot twist twice to the viewer that it comes across as an unnecessary padding, and the way it does it Its plot twist is so unsatisfactory it feels like exposure is dumping on the viewer, especially if the viewer has previously caught on foreshadowing the previous part. It ends in a rather mediocre, if predictable manner. Ultimately, the film is very average. It's very relaxing, don't get me wrong, but those who want more plot can end up disappointed. 5/10 It's still better than Kaguya though. 1 of 1 episodes seen sendrillon (All reviews) 71 people found this review useful In a total of 10 Story 10 Animation 10 Sound 9 Character 10 Enjoyment 10 Studio Ghibli did it again. When Marnie was there (Omoide not Marnie) really blew himself out of the water with his art quality, storyline and character development. I created an account on MAL JUST to watch this movie. If you are looking for emotional pleasure with this sprinkle of mystery, look no further. Story: The plot is built so that you are left feeling satisfied and want more. As with many Ghibli animations, it has a kind of realistic underness on it. It's usually a film about family and the irreplaceable connection we have with them, so it really concerns the house. Art: Studio Ghibli has really stepped it up in terms of art; Background beautiful style watercolors in the match with classic handmade animation. Towards the end you can say that they end the budget, but never-less I would like to watch a movie just to look at art again. Music: The music was very well suited with the film, however, nothing really too noticeable. The ending of the song really brings you back to the beginning of the film, though wrapped it up beautifully. Real sense of nostalgia:') Character: This is the best character development I've seen from studio Ghibli at the time, it's really nice to see the MC change and get out of your comfort zone. Marnie's back story was well summed up at the end if you couldn't piece together the puzzle. The contrast between these two characters and seeing them come together is really warming hearts. I highly recommend this movie, so take a box of fabrics and go see it! 1 of 1 episodes seen by Detective (All Reviews) 53 people found this review useful In a total of 4 Story 4 Animation 9 Sound 5 Character 3 Pleasure 3 With Studio Ghibli difficult to separate the monoliths of previous works from its new ones. Last year, released his swan song Kaguya Hime no Monogatari, which broke the ground at the level of animation, added depth to the narrative of the folk tale of the tenth century and was certainly the most delightful work of Gibli since the days of Sen Do Chihiro. However, despite the narrative currently surrounding Studio Ghibli (a Disney subsidiary no less) going under, Kageyabashi manages to weave an extremely simplistic and rather flat story similar in pace to his Arietty's efforts. Although based from the novel, the story manages to be paced quite badly and often tends to wander around pretentious soil. What begins as an awkward encounter, laden with romantic overtones between two girls in the countryside, ends in a meandering in a purely sentimental fog. The twist withdrawal while not completely overplayed felt exhausting and tired, and the short duration of just 102 minutes erupts often due to the insensitive main character. Anna's character while understandably young, shows very little development throughout the narrative, and instead just makes an about-face immediately after conveniently written by Hisako simply explains Marnie's entire story. Mystery of the girl disappears in the air with the girl, as the character of Marnie is also strongly contradicted. As a child, she was often bullied and harassed by maids who cared for her, but Marnie still has a great love for the mansion in which she lived. The inconsistency of Marnie's character, who changes from mentor as a friend to Anna in a jaded coward seems too confusing, and ultimately unsatisfactory especially when comparing this film's character to the study of other animated films in the same genre such as Flanders No Inu. Visually, Omoide Marnie displays some of the best handmade industries. A lot of attention to detail can be seen in the creation of the House of Oyva animation detailing the characters in the background, such as festival sequences or opening scenes in the playground. A few notable good cuts also help raise the narrative and even provide some interesting take on the omen. A perfect example is the cutting out of Anna Marnie's sketch in Anna's face herself in the same position on the screen. Beyond that, though, very few freedoms have been taken in terms of originality, and the assessment at all costs is just average. With that said I have to conclude that while Marnie's Omoide is a very beautiful movie, it's not very evolving. The main characters are annoying and banal, and the conclusion feels hasty and a little shallow. The ultimate problem is that for a movie that doesn't have a lot of action, there's also not much you can say about it. The film runs through like a haze, leaving little to chew on. For an animated supernatural film he lacks a whim, and that too serious tone is just too ham for the way he treats his subject. I find it hard to recommend this movie, so just watch if you are very interested in sasuga animation studio Ghibli. We recently featured the first teaser trailer for Marnie, which was short and consisted mainly of the theme song from the film. In this full trailer we get a better idea of the story, about a young girl who is friends with a ghost named Marnie, even if she does not release this ghost. There are some playful scenes and funny moments, but as always, it just looks absolutely beautiful. I'm curious to test this, something a little different from Ghibli, but still made with the same passion and detail that goes into every frame of their movies. Have fun!
