About the Instrument ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT Hapi Drums is a set of four steel tongue drums craed by legendary instrument makers Grahm Doe & Tricia Kelly at their workshop in the Sierra Mountain foothills of Oakhurst, CA. Steel tongue instruments are known for a smooth fundemantal tone wrapped in a haze of complex harmonics and a long, mellow sustain. Hapi Drum is one of the oldest and highest quality steel tongue drum makers in the world, with unique body designs and tuning opons and clear, rich notes that cut cleanly through clusters of carefully-balanced lush, swirling overtones. We recorded four instruments, capturing each of them with a wide stereo pair of large-diaphragm Neumann TLM 103s and a binaural Rode NT-SF1, to provide you with two disnct tonal opons. Instruments included the low "Origin" D minor model (D3 - A4), a pair of "Slim Tuneable" mid models (A3 - E5) and the small, treble Tini (A4 to A5). Each model can be loaded separately - including individual tongue soloing - or you can play all of them together as a combined chromac scale. We played each one with so rubber mallets, hard metal picks, and nylon jazz brushes. With our intuive mul-layered moduilar UI, you'll enjoy complete freedom to mix, layer, retune and customize each sound to your heart's content. CREATIVE CONTROL FEATURES We’ve packed the user interface with powerful sound-shaping controls to give you complete flexibility. The master preset contains every sample in the library and a host of powerful expression features. There are 4 independent sound layers, each with a full set of parameters that can be linked, automated and customized. These include swell, aack, start offset, release (with pad-mode), vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, sound bank selecon, and crossfader assignment. Next, we used various sound-design tricks to morph the sounds from our journey into tonal and dissonant pads, synth-tones and ambient dreamscapes. You’ll find these in the Layer 3 (Ambience) sound menu. They can be played by themselves, or used to add texture and body to the primary sounds in Layers 1 and 2. Lastly, the Sub-Synth layer is a basic synthesizer with 10 shapes that can be added for transient and tonal support. In the advanced sengs pull-down window, you’ll also find an adaptable per-layer LFO system, with selectable LFO shape, modulaon target parameter, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing and fade-in me. You can also apply your choice of 13 lowpass, high-pass and FX filters, with assignable modulaon targets such as velocity, mod-wheel, expression, aer-touch, key posion and step-sequencer table control. Our customizable arpeggiator features a built-in velocity sequencer table and control over arp direcon, note ming, swing, randomizaon and duraon. We’ve also included a key and scale lock system that allows you to constrain your notes to a wide variety of common scales and keys for easy melodic composion and live performance. The built-in modular FX rack window offers 18 different DSP effect modules that you can assign in any of 10 available slots, in any order that you wish. You’ll find classic phase, flanger, delay, distoron, amp and cab simulators, compressors, EQ, rotator and so much more. The Reverb effect includes99 of our own convoluon reverb impulse presets. We’ve captured a huge variety of different rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor environments, along with 40 unique, strange and creave special effect impulses to completely transform the sound and open up whole new worlds of musical possibility.. 2 HAPI DRUMS Founded in 2008, HAPI Steel Tongue Drum has gained a reputaon for outstanding service and commitment to customer sasfacon. Who are we? HAPI Drum is owned and operated by partners Grahm Doe & Tricia Kelly. We also own and operate The Didgeridoo Store since 1997, with over 19 years of combined experience in the musical instrument marketplace. We are a member and parcipant of NAMM (Naonal Associaon of Music Makers). Our mission is to enhance peoples' lives through music and culture. How was the HAPI Drum created? Our passion for steel instruments began with the purchase of our first Hang. The beauful sound of steel capvated and inspired us. With our previous experience of creang musical instruments (didgeridoos), we began experimenng with steel. We discovered Dennis Havlena and his research on using steel tongues to create a similar kind of sound. Inspired by his proof of concept we set out on a prototyping journey. We began to experiment with tongue shapes, drum body sizes, sound ports, dampening materials, and different steel types. Aer months of work we had our first design, the HAPI Origin. We began offering these for sale in 2008 and shortly aer we were awarded with our first U.S. design patent and a trademark for HAPI Drum. We are always excited to improve and evolve our product line! From 1985 to 1999, Bart edited the quarterly journal Experimental Musical Instruments. The journal served as an essenal resource and clearing house in an otherwise scaered but lively and growing field. Aer the final issue, Experimental Musical Instruments connued as an organizaon serving people interested in invenve instrument design, producing and selling informaonal resources as well as hardware for instrument makers. MANUAL Nada is the primal sound or the first vibration out of which the whole creation has sprung “After a whole life having gone through many musical styles, there is one that has always been in my heart. Because, deep inside, is a significant part of my soul and my essence from which I cannot let go: New Age music - to which I owe it all; what I am and what I feel. I have gone from ethnic, folk, antique to soundtrack music, and every single note I composed or sampled was imbued with it in some way. Sometimes I thought it had left, never to return, but it was always there, dormant and feeding from those new styles and, at the same time, providing them with all its spirit. Now it has returned and more beautiful than ever. NADA is a spiritual travel through the sounds of my soul.” EDUARDO TARILONTE INSTRUMENTS Nada is the Sanskrit word for "sound" or "tone." Many yogis believe that nada is the hidden energy that connects the outer and inner cosmos. NADA contains a lot of different instruments perfect for meditation and new Nada yoga, or nada philosophy, is based on the premise that the entire age music. They have been sampled keeping in mind the simplicity and usability universe consists of sound vibrations called nadas. The words, nada and at the same time the beauty of the raw sound, blending the authentic yoga, can be translated to mean "union through sound." This ancient sound of the instrument, including true legato, with the endless loops and Indian system follows a science of inner transformation through sound control capabilities from the synthesizers.
