The programme is back to full strength this year with many new events, activities and features. The organising committee are particularly proud of, and grateful for, the collaboration and co-operation between the sponsors, clubs, organisations and individuals, without which, this festival would not be possible. The ambition of Shetland Boat Week is to encourage and enable the use of boats of all kinds, by all ages. No less important is getting people on the water and reviving the passion for Shetland’s maritime heritage, by encouraging the maintenance of traditional boats and retention of traditional skills. This programme of events facilitates access to a range of maritime themed activities for all ages. Many events take place in and around Hay’s Dock in Lerwick, with active encouragement to visit the nautical offerings from Unst to Sandsayre and everywhere in between. Follow the event on Facebook and Instagram for regular updates. www.shetlandboatweek.com Book online - www.thelittleboxoffice.com/sat @shetlandboatweek @shetlandboatweek 4 Unst Boat Haven Unst Boat Haven is run by the Unst Heritage Trust and is a fantastic place to visit for anyone with an interest in boats, or social history. The Boat Haven was first set up by Duncan Sandison, initially in the Swedish Kirk at Baltasound. This sadly blew down on 1st Jan 1992 and Duncan then built the present Boat Haven which was opened on the 14th May 1994 by Rob Anderson. The visitor attraction celebrates it’s 25th anniversary this year. The building includes 21 full sized boats of various types and a toy boat for bairns to play in. The boat collection includes examples from local builders Robbie Nicolson, Willie Isbister, Lowrie Isbister and Willie Mouat. There are also boats by other builders throughout Shetland, which allows the visitor to see clearly the differences in build style in different areas. Displays and artefacts also cover local history including the herring and Haaf fishing, First World War submarine artefacts, and a model of the sixareen “Winter Witch” which notably survived the Gloup disaster in 1885. The full size sixareen, Far Haaf, sits in the covered shed in the grounds of the Boat Haven. An impressive sight to see. The Unst Boat Haven is open from 11am - 4pm Monday to Saturday, 2pm - 4pm Sunday, 1st May to 30th September.     CETACEANS OF SHETLAND The cetacean fauna (whales, dolphins and porpoises) of the Shetland Islands is one of the richest in the UK. Favoured localities for cetaceans are off headlands and between sounds of islands in inshore areas, or over fishing banks in offshore regions. Since 1980, eighteen species of cetacean have been recorded along the coast or in nearshore waters (within 60 km of the coast). Of these, eight species (29% of the UK cetacean fauna) are either present throughout the year or recorded annually as seasonal visitors. Of recent unusual live sightings, a fin whale was observed off the east coast of Noss on 11th August 1994; a sei whale was seen, along with two minkes whales, off Muckle Skerry, Out Skerries on 27th August 1993; 12-14 sperm whales were seen on 14th July 1998, 14 miles south of Sumburgh Head in the Fair Isle Channel; single belugas were seen on 4th January 1996 in Hoswick Bay and on 18th August 1997 at Lund, Unst; and a striped dolphin came into Tresta Voe on 14th July 1993, eventually stranding, where it was euthanased. CETACEAN SPECIES REGULARLY SIGHTED IN THE REGION Humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae Since 1992, humpback whales have been seen annually off the Shetland coast, with 1-3 individuals per year. The species was exploited during the early part of the century by commercial whaling and became very rare for over half a century. Sightings generally occur between May-September, particularly in June and July, mainly around the southern tip of Shetland. Minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata The minke whale is the most commonly sighted whale in Shetland waters.

    THE HISTORY OF TIREE IN 100 OBJECTS: no. 83 CAULKING MALLET Over the last few months, Donald Brown, Vaul, has given An Iodhlann a number of boat building tools from his family's workshop. Among them is this substantial wooden caulking mallet, along with a bag of oakum (hemp soaked in tar), three caulking irons, an adze, a wooden block plane and a spokeshave. Taken together, these beautiful tools, smoothed by years of use, shine a flickering light on an often- forgotten Tiree craft. In the nineteenth century, many islanders had a boat but were relatively slow to adopt industrial fishing of the waters around Tiree. The Duke of Argyll had tried hard to encourage matters, letting a croft in Scarinish to a 'boat carpenter' as early as 1802 and crofts in Mannal to prospective fishermen. But the lack of a half-decent harbour meant that all island boats had to be dragged up the beach to safety every evening, limiting their size. Smaller boats took longer to sail out to the fishing grounds, could carry fewer lines and were less safe in the huge seas around Skerryvore. The minister reported in 1845: 'Though almost all are occasional fishers, yet few follow it steadily as a profession. Out of ninety-four fishing skiffs which the parish contains, only ten are regularly employed.' Six years later, however, census officials identified 127 'fishermen' on Tiree, and seven boat building workshops sprang up to service this suddenly booming industry.     Records of species and subspecies recorded in Scotland on up to 20 occasions In 1993 SOC Council delegated to The Scottish Birds Records Committee (SBRC) responsibility for maintaining the Scottish List (list of all species and subspecies of wild birds recorded in Scotland). In turn, SBRC appointed a subcommittee to carry out this function. Current members are Dave Clugston, Ron Forrester, Angus Hogg, Bob McGowan Chris McInerny and Roger Riddington. In 1996, Peter Gordon and David Clugston, on behalf of SBRC, produced a list of records of species recorded in Scotland on up to 5 occasions (Gordon & Clugston 1996). Subsequently, SBRC decided to expand this list to include all acceptable records of species recorded on up to 20 occasions, and to incorporate subspecies with a similar number of records (Andrews & Naylor 2002). The last occasion that a complete list of records appeared in print was in The Birds of Scotland, which included all records up until 2004 (Forrester et al. 2007). During the period from 2002 until 2013, amendments and updates to the list of records appeared regularly as part of SBRC’s Scottish List Subcommittee’s reports in Scottish Birds. Since 2014 these records have appear on the SOC’s website, a significant advantage being that the entire list of all records for such species can be viewed together (Forrester 2014). The Scottish List Subcommittee are now updating the list annually. The current update includes records from the British Birds Rarities Committee’s Report on rare birds in Great Britain in 2015 (Hudson 2016) and SBRC’s Report on rare birds in Scotland, 2015 (McGowan & McInerny 2017).
