Waikouaiti Community Garden Project

LOST: Brown framed prescription glasses. Around or in the vicinity of the Hawkesbury Lagoon/Inverary/Geelong/ Scotia/Stewart St. If you find them please could you take them to the Library. Thank you.

The idea of a community garden for Waikouaiti was given life when POWA received a small grant through their DCC Place Based Community Grant in 2018 to get it started. The DCC have granted them use of a patch of land at the back of the Events Centre to develop.

At the moment the garden is a couple of sturdy raised beds behind the sign by the skate park (soon to be resurfaced) but more beds are planned. With the help of local organic garden designer Michelle Cox designs have been drawn up for a wicking bed, a pallet bed, a herb spiral, and a circular seat for resting around the massive macrocarpa stump. An active group has been working on developing these, using donated materials and volunteer labour as much as possible. They have chosen this motto to express what we want to achieve; “The Community of Waikouaiti are brought together to care for one another through the growing and sharing of healthy food”. We hope to grow and harvest fresh, delicious food and eventually produce generous harvests that allow sharing withinPhotos: the communityTracey Clare – providing produce for needy families, and becoming a venue where families can learn to grow food for themselves”. They have adopted from another garden group Guiding Principles relating to Health, Community and Sustainability which will be posted on the noticeboard on the back of their sign.

After their progress they were a little disheartened to find that most of their first seedlings planted in thePhoto: beautiful ODT macrocarpa beds had been carefully dug out and presumably transferred to someone else's vegetable garden where we hope at least they are continuing to thrive. The committee was saddened that the person who took the seedlings thought it was more important to save a few dollars a punnet from the dairy or Hammer Hardware would have cost, than to continue to grow them up for a harvest to benefit our wider community. By stealing the plants they were stealing from themselves.

To view menus They want community spirit to prevail over selfishness, and if you do too please come to our first public event, which will be the building of our herb spiral, starting 1pm on Saturday 16 November (Sunday 17 if wet).
