E-journal promoted by the Campus for Peace, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya http://journal-of-conflictology.uoc.edu ARTICLE Looking Beyond Conflict: The Involvement of Tiv Diaspora in Peacebuilding in Nigeria Terhemba Ambe-Uva Submitted: December 2010 Accepted: March 2011 Published: May 2011 Abstract Examining the role of transnational migrant groups in peace processes is a particular area of field research within the broad area of studies on migration. This article examines the contribution of diaspora of the Tiv ethnic group in the USA to peacebuilding in Nigeria and argues that, contrary to recent findings in the literature that African diaspora had a negative impact on peace processes, the Tiv diaspora actively engaged all the conflicting parties in an attempt to ensure sustained peace and wider democratisation of power. They were mobilised as a result of the military massacre of two hundred unarmed Tiv civilians in their homeland. The initially weak ties of the Tiv diaspora with their home country have been strengthened, with the propensity to actively participate there. Despite their track record in peace processes, a weak social, economic and political position, as well as capacity constraints, may frustrate their efforts towards an enduring and sustainable peace. Ground Water and River Quality Assessment for Some Heavy Metals and Physicochemical Parameters in Wukari Town, Taraba State, Nigeria M. O. Aremu1, O. J. Oko1, C. Andrew1 1Department of Chemical Sciences, Federal University Wukari, PMB 1020, Wukari, Taraba State, Nigeria Abstract: With a few to assessing the qualities of water sources in Wukari local government area (LGA), a study was conducted on ground water and rivers in two settlements at Wukari LGA. For this purpose, some heavy metals (cadmium, lead, arsenic, iron, copper, mercury and manganese) and physicochemical parameters (temperature, turbidity, suspended solids, total dissolved solids, conductivity, pH, nitrate, phosphate, chloride, alkalinity, hardness and chemical/biochemical oxygen demand) were determined in water samples collected from hand–dug wells, boreholes and rivers in Puje and Avyi during wet and dry seasons using standard analytical techniques. The results showed that all the seven metals determined were detected and present at trace levels in all the water samples ranging from 0.001 ppm (Hg) in well and borehole to 0.0768 ppm (Fe) in river, and 0.001 ppm (Hg) in borehole to 0.0763 ppm (Fe) in river for Puje and Avyi, respectively. However, all the metals were found to have contained concentrations below the permissible safe level. The results further revealed that the levels of physicochemical parameters in the water samples for both wet and dry seasons are within the required standard limits set by World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water. Nevertheless, source protection is recommended for the bodies of water for the benefit of Wukari people. A week-long commemoration was undertaken with several activities including solidarity walk, cultural displays, musical performances, friendly soccer games by adults and children, fashion parade, livelihood exhibitions, COVID-19 vaccination, essay/debate competitions and exhibitions of handcraft/technological inventions in Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River and Taraba States. PROTECTION Protection Monitoring ■ UNHCR collaborated with twelve government agencies, national and international partners to systematically identify protection incidents, analyse the protection risk and refer cases to partners providing protection and multisectoral assistance, including legal assistance, registration/documentation, advocacy, capacity building, awareness sessions, services related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and material assistance. ■ In Benue, Cross River and Taraba (BCT) States, UNHCR and partners undertook at least 30 Joint border monitoring visits, to assess the presence and needs of new arrivals, advocate for the protection of refugees and ensure that refugees have access to territory. -

ETHNIC CONFLICTS IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF TIV JUKUNSOCIO ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE Ruth Yohanna Joshua Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic Wuntin Dada, Bauchi, Nigeria [email protected] ABSTRACT Tiv-Jukun conflict has a long history of occurrence and reoccurrence over a period of time. In many instances, the conflicts have resulted in the destruction of lives and properties and internal displacement of civilians. The conflict has affected the relationship between the two ethnic groups who have been living together cordially. Previous studies on the conflict have not given proper attention to the socio- economic perspective on the conflict. This paper presents the root and remote causes of the Tiv Jukun conflict. Identifying the triggers and drivers of conflict between the two ethnic groups could help in bringing about a lasting solution to the crisis. Interviews were used to illicit the opinion of various demographics of both ethnic groups. Findings indicate among others competition over land resources and the desire for each ethnic group to attain political position for the benefit of its ethnic group in terms of socio-economic amenities such as education, healthcare services and employment. In order to promote a peaceful co-existence, the Nigerian government should implement the report of the previous committees, a proper sharing formula between the two ethnic groups and address the issue of citizenship rights constitutionally. International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research, Volume 7, Issue 2, February-2016 286 ISSN 2229-5518 The Environmental Issues of Taraba State Bako T. 1, Oparaku L.A. 2 and Flayin J.M. 3 Abstract-The objective of this paper is to discuss the nature of environmental degradation (limitation) as a result of desertification, deforestation, flooding, soil erosion and climate change, in terms of their impact on productivity and to suggest potential strategies for amelioration or management strategies to prevent degradation and to maintain an environmental balance for sustainable security. This study was conducted to examine some of the environmental problems of Taraba State. Data were generated from secondary sources as well as photographs. The paper highlights some environmental problems of Taraba State. The paper recommends ecosystem education, natural resource rehabilitation, improved technology, environmental data bank, population data and enablement of existing environmental policies among other measures to overcome the environmental problems. It also advocates for the integration of both local and advanced environmental management strategies in order to achieve a sustainable environment. Magaji Peninnah Joseph Department of General Studies, College of Agriculture, Jalingo ABSTRACT: Education can be construed as a pattern of awareness which determines and influences the behavioural pattern of any given society. It encompasses societal civilization, values, norms and traditions. It is a people’s belief system, system of thought, an instrument through which a society produces and reproduces its kind in the light of what makes one a representation of his/her society. Every society therefore has its own system of education through which cultural transmission and socialization are anchored. Unfortunately, former colonies erroneously consider western education as the only best alternative for all-round development. It is viewed as the basic instrument for civilization, gainful employment, socialization, economic prosperity and development. This conventional assumptions has resulted in the eventual neglect of the traditional education by African societies, Southern Taraba inclusive. This paper therefore examine the process of introduction and spread of western education in Southern Taraba Area. The paper captures issues like the agencies and individuals involved, the impact, challenges encountered and how the challenges can be remedied. Thus, using a multi-disciplinary methodological approach, the study came to the realization that western education has impacted tremendously on the peoples of Southern Taraba Area in the spheres of human, infrastructural, political and socio-economic development. -

ISSN: 2021-6009 Case Study Challenges of Water Supply and its Effect on Economic Production: A Case Study of Ussa Local Government Area, Taraba State Nigeria 1Shenpam, Godwin Daniel, *2Danjuma, Andembutop Kwesaba, 3Umaru Benjamin 1,2,3Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Federal University Wukari, Nigeria In recent years, Ussa has faced various challenges in water supply which has been a major concern to law makers and the government of Taraba state. This study therefore is aimed at examining the various problems and prospect of water supply in Ussa Local Government. The specific objectives were to identify the existing sources of water supply in Ussa Local Government of Taraba state, to examine the problems and prospect associated with each source in the study area, and to proffer alternative measure to appropriate quarters. Data were collected from 150 respondent of the study area. The data were analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentage statistics. The results revealed that 87.1% of the respondents agreed that there is water shortage in the area which as a result has led to increase charges by the suppliers, 51.3% said the water was good. More than 60% of the respondent claimed that the population of the study area usually consumes the water directly without any method of purification, and that the water is mostly used for domestic purposes. The study also reveals that 68.1% problem of water supply problem is seasonality and distance to source. -
