  • EMAIL INTERVIEW with Pachi Tapiz, Spanish Music Critic December 2009 to February 2010. Published in Spanish by Tomajazz in June
EMAIL INTERVIEW with Pachi Tapiz, Spanish Music Critic December 2009 to February 2010. Published in Spanish by Tomajazz in June 2010 http://www.tomajazz.com/perfiles/ochs_larry_2010.html Q1: Why did Rova decide to join its creative forces with Nels Cline Singers? Ochs: Rova has employed all these guys over the past 12 years or so in different bands. Scott Amendola and I work together in Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core as well as in a new band called Kihnoua featuring the great vocals of Korean‐born Dohee Lee. (That band plays in Europe very soon, but unfortunately nothing in Spain. I thought “maybe” some place there would hire this band after all the news / nonsense in December, but no one called me except journalists. No, I was not surprised that no one called. But I do feel strongly that Kihnoua is a great band, but I would agree with those on the other side; it is not a jazz band. Jazz influenced? Definitely; jazz band? No. I will send you the just released CD in early May when I return from the tour.) Sorry for the digression: So Scott performed first with Rova in a big piece of mine in 1998 called “Pleistocene: The Ice Age.” (as well as Adams’ and Raskin pieces that same evening.) And he worked in Vancouver with us on Electric Ascension in 2005 along with Devin Hoff and Nels, of course. Nels recorded Electric Ascension with us live in 2003, played on every performance of that “event” until 2009, and he is “the man” in free jazz when it comes to playing updated versions of late‐period Coltrane on guitar.

  • An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

  • The Ethereal Genius of Craig Taborn - the New York Times
12/20/2019 The Ethereal Genius of Craig Taborn - The New York Times FEATURE The Ethereal Genius of Craig Taborn He has become one of the best jazz pianists alive — by disappearing almost completely into his music. By Adam Shatz June 22, 2017 he jazz pianist Craig Taborn often goes to museums for inspiration, carrying a notebook to record ideas for compositions and song titles. He also sometimes T performs at museums, becoming a sort of art object himself. This is a complicated situation for Taborn, who is very private. His mother, Marjorie Taborn, remembers seeing him at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, where he played a recital to a full house at the debut of his solo album “Avenging Angel.” After the show, she was chatting with his friend Tim Berne, a saxophonist, while her son signed copies of his album, smiling graciously and patiently fielding questions. She and Berne looked at each other, because they each knew how much effort this required from Taborn. “Look at Craig,” Taborn’s mother recalls telling Berne, “he’s getting everything he never wanted, all the attention he’d never seek.” Taborn, who is 47, is used to attracting attention he’d prefer to avoid, and not just because of his extraordinary musicianship. He is an African-American man from Minnesota with features that often draw curious looks: a very pale complexion, reddish-blond curls and hazel eyes. “I have never had a day when someone does not look at me with an openly questioning gaze, sometimes remote and furtive, sometimes polite, sometimes in admiration or awe and sometimes with disgust,” he told me.

But music can speak volumes when life requires a response to the most profound and wrenching of losses, channeling the deepest feelings, expressing the ineffable and providing emotional and spiritual succor. For Rob Mazurek, the brilliant Chicago cornetist, composer and conceptualist improviser who has honed an international coterie of collaborators, the sudden and unexpected passing of his mother Kathleen Mazurek in May of 2013 set him on a quest to honor her bountiful spirit and acknowledge her transition to another realm. Not surprisingly, he found exactly what he needed in São Paulo, Brazil. Working with five sonic explorers in Black Cube SP, a sextet that builds on the celebrated São Paulo Underground collective trio with drummer Mauricio Takara and keyboardist Guilherme Granado, he created Return the Tides: Ascension Suite and Holy Ghost, a startlingly cathartic and magisterial modern psychedelic spiritual that’s as riveting as it is ravishing. The album is Mazurek’s latest breathtaking project on Cuneiform.

  • French Stewardship of Jazz: the Case of France Musique and France Culture
ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication.
