MAUREEN VADNAIS

Maureen Vadnais grew up on a mixed cattle and grain farm in Southern Alberta near the town of Cardston. She went to the where she graduated in 1997. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a Specialization in Land Resource Science.

Maureen has worked with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development since 2007 and is currently the Manager of the Agricultural Service Board Program. Her role is to work with the 70 Agricultural Service Boards throughout the province to admin- ister the grant program and provide information related to programs, legislation, weeds and other pests. In her free time, Maureen likes to escape the city and go home to help on the fami- ly farm. There you will find her working with the horses and cattle or playing with her nieces and nephews. BRAD STELFOX “THE ENERGY OF LAND USE” Dr. Brad Stelfox established Forem Technologies and the AL- CES Group in 1995 and is the architect and developer of the ALCES model. He is an adjunct professor at the Depart- ment of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, and the Department of Environmental Design, University of Calgary. Brad's research and teachings focus on the interface be- tween human land uses and regional landscapes. The major development stream of Forem has been ALCES (A Landscape Cumulative Effects Simulator), a program gaining rapid acceptance by governments, industry, the scien- tific community, and NGO's to explore issues between landscapes, land uses (agriculture, forestry, oil and gas, mining, human populations, tourism, and transpor- tation sectors), and ecological and economic integrity. Dr. Stelfox has received the Alberta Emerald Foundation Award (2004) and the Alberta Science and Technology Award (2003) for his contributions with the ALCES model in advancing understand- ing of land use sustainability issues and in seeking solutions that balance economic, social, and ecological indicators. When Brad is not working on the ALCES model or guest lecturing on land use issues, he is likely on horseback exploring the mountain trails of Alberta's east slopes. Candace is a Land Use Specialist with the Science and Tech- nology Branch, of Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Her work currently involves pro- vision of technical expertise and research on agricultural land-use issues, local and regional food systems, regional planning, and geo-spatial analysis and modelling impacting agricultural landscapes across Canada. Candace is from a fourth generation farm family near Indus, Alberta (southeast of Calgary). She completed her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture de- gree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1983; and has been a professional agrologist in good standing with Alberta Institute of Agrologists since 2000, and formerly with Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists [1991-2000]. Candace has worked with Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada since 1995, origi- nally with the former branch known as P.F.R.A, in various capacities from technical specialist, to management, to policy and program development and delivery. Prior to coming to AAFC, she worked with the provincial government of Saskatchewan in agricultural extension, and co-managed a family farming operation involving over 4,500 acres of crops, grazing lands and a 120 head cow-calf operation on the headwaters of the Assiniboine River. She possesses over 25 years of professional experience in agricultural program development and delivery, integrated land-use planning, land and water resource conservation, GIS analysis and landscape mod- elling, community-based watershed planning, and multi-sector, multi-disciplinary ini- tiatives. “NOT YOUR FATHER’S FARM ANYMORE; 21ST CENTURY POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND REGULATORY REALITY” Harry is CitySpaces’ Manager of Alberta and Prairie Operations. He joined the firm in 2011, following a distinguished career in local government, planning and magagement, as well as a private planning practice. Harry has been recognized and awarded by his peers for excellence in planning and design projects, and for his long standing contributions to professional organizations. In 2014 he was nomi- nated and elected to the Canadian Institute of Planners, College of Fellows. Throughout his career, Harry has pursued a passion for academic teaching and student mentoring. He has been an Adjunct Professor at several colleges and univer- sities in Canada and the U.S, and now teaches a professional planning course for graduate students in the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design. As a community planner, Harry has practices in areas of rural and small town planning, public engagement, sustainable land development, downtown revitaliza- tion, environmental planning, and First Nations land planning. STEVE SAVAGE “NAVIGATING FOOD INDUSTRY MARKETING TRENDS” Steve Savage has been working in various aspects of agricultural technology for more than 30 years. Origi- nally trained as a plant pathologist at the University of California, Davis - Dr. Savage has since worked for Colorado State University, for DuPont, for the biologi- cal control company Mycogen, and since 1997 as an independent consultant. The Resolutions session was called to order by Provincial Agricultural Service Board Committee Chairman, Pat Gordeyko at 3:00pm.
