You’re listening to Z2000FM, music for the new millennium. And now for all you members of Generation X out there, here’s a blast from the past. This one is coming at you from almost 15 years ago - straight from the heart of The Electric Eighties. The era that gave us M.C. Hammer, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, stone-washed denim, and of course...the Rubik’s Cube! WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO GO PETE Jitterbug Jitterbug Jitterbug Jitterbug 2 You put the boom-boom into my heart You send my soul sky high when your lovin’ starts Jitterbug into my brain Goes a bang-bang-bang ‘til my feet do the same If something’s bugging you If something aint right My best friend told me what you did last night Left me sleepin’ in my bed I was dreaming, but I should have been with you instead. I do the jitterbug! Corey Sr: Ladies and gentlemen, my graduating class from William Ocean High School. And that little dude...well that’s me, Corey Palmer. Voted the boy most likely to be married by the age of 21. Those two, they were my best friends, Kirk Keaton and Alf Bueller. Look at us... I mean, those were the days when Max Headroom was cool - and the Atari was cutting edge technology. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Sure, over the last decade, some of the names have become a little vague...and I haven’t seen some of the faces since graduation. But when I look at the school photos, I can still recall what every one of them was like...and can’t help wondering where some 3 of them are now. And out of all these faces, there is still one name that gives me goose bumps to this day...Tiffany Houston. Tiffany was the girl next door. No, I mean it - she actually lived next door to me. Look at her, she was the most beautiful girl in the school - if not the whole world. She was also the first girl who ever broke my heart. Of course there were many others that made up our class. Michael Feldman and the cool guys, Tiffany’s best friend Cyndi Gibson, and our class geek - Feargal McFerrin III. So there we were. It was the start of our senior year. Junior High was nothing more than a distant memory. We were young, naive - and we were having the time of our lives... KIDS IN AMERICA JEN Looking out a dirty old window Down below the cars in the city go rushing by I sit here alone and I wonder why Friday night and everyone’s moving I can feel the heat but it’s soothing Heading down I search for the beat in this dirty town ENSEMBLE B Down town the young ones are going Down town the young ones are growing We’re the kids in America (Whoa-oh) We’re the kids in America (Whoa-oh) Everybody live for the music-go-round JEN Bright lights the music gets faster Look boy, don’t check on your watch, not another glance I’m not leaving now, honey not a chance Hot-shot, give me no problems Much later baby you’ll be saying never mind You know life is cruel, life is never kind ENSEMBLE B Kind hearts don’t make a new story Kind hearts don’t grab any glory We’re the kids in America (Whoa-oh) We’re the kids in America (Whoa-oh) Everybody live for the music-go-round Na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na (sing) Na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na (yeah) 4 We’re the kids We’re the kids We’re the kids in America We’re the kids We’re the kids We’re the kids in America! Principal Ron McDonald could not be here this morning, but he has asked me to welcome you back and to say a special William Ocean “Hi!” to all of our new students. For those of you who have joined us this year, my name is Mr. Cocker - and I am the head of Mathematics at this school. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce you all to your Senior Student Coordinator, Miss Brannigan. BRANNIGAN: Thank you, Mr. Cocker. Our first job this year is to select our Senior Year President. The three candidates running are Corey Palmer, Michael Feldman, and Feargal McFerrin. Now, Election Day is next Friday and that is when the candidates will be giving their election presentations. But for now, I would like each candidate to come up to the front and address the class. Corey, could you start us off?

  • A FOURTH GRADE EXPERIENCE Donald G. Saari Northwestern University, Departments of Mathematics and of Economics August, 1991
A FOURTH GRADE EXPERIENCE Donald G. Saari Northwestern University, Departments of Mathematics and of Economics August, 1991 “We’ve been trying to tell you you’re wrong!” With this severe reprimand, a fourth- grade girl, hand on hip, expressed the class’ growing exasperation with the slow witted mathematics professor who couldn’t understand the obvious. Dr. Diane Briars, Director of Mathematics, invited me to discuss modern mathematics with the teachers and several student groups as part of the Pittsburgh Public Schools’ observance of the national “Mathematics Awareness Week.” It was easy to prepare for classes fromtheeighthgradeon–agrabbagofunexpectedexamplesfrom“chaos,” mathematical astronomy, properties of surfaces, and statistical paradoxes could illustrate mathematical themes while capturing their imagination. But I fought to disguise my growing panic when informed that I was to talk to a fourth grade class. What does one say to fourth graders? It didn’t help to discover on arrival at the East Hill’s Elementary School that the core of my intended audience, Ms. Chamberlain’s class of very young children, all were sufficiently short to inspire extreme caution while walking about. I have found that the mathematics of decision making – in particular, voting – serves as a useful vehicle to introduce a variety of mathematical concepts starting with elementary counting, to algebra and geometry, and then, on a research level, certain delicate mathe- matical symmetries. So, I figured I could survive my allotted forty minutes by describing a counting problem caused by a voting example. The posed problem involved an hypothetical group of fifteen children permitted to watch only one TV show for the evening.

  • Gus Van Sant Regis Dialogue Formatted
Gus Van Sant Regis Dialogue with Scott Macaulay, 2003 Scott Macaulay: We're here at the Walker Art Center for Regis dialogue with American filmmaker Gus Van Sant. He'll be discussing the unique artistic vision that runs through his entire body of work. Gus was first recognized for a trilogy of films that dealt with street hustlers, Mala Noche, Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho. He then went on to experiment with forum and a number of other films including To Die For, Psycho and even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Gus is perhaps best known for his films, Goodwill Hunting and Finding Forrester, but all of his work including his latest film, Gerry, has his own unique touch. We'll be discussing Gus' films today during this Regis dialogue. I'm Scott Macaulay, producer and editor of Filmmaker Magazine. I'll be your guide through Gus' work today in this Regis dialogue. Thanks. Gus Van Sant: Thank you. Scott Macaulay: It's a real pleasure to be here with Gus Van Sant on this retrospective ... Which is called on the road again. I guess there are a lot of different illusions in that title, a lot of very obvious ones because a lot of Gus' movies deal with travel and change and people going different places, both locations within America but also in their lives. But another interesting implication of the title is that this retrospective is occurring on the eve of the release here and also nationwide of Gerry, which is really one of Gus' best and most moving films but it's also yet sort of another new direction for Gus as a filmmaker.

  • The Torn Heart*
THE TORN HEART* One Tuesday morning, when the alarm clock rang, David did not get out of his bunk. Ten minutes later, his counselor opened the door to his cabin. “Come on,” he said. “You’ll be late for breakfast again.” “But Elliott, I’m tired,” David said. “Don’t be such a baby”, Elliott said impatiently. “You’re always late. Just get up and get ready. Everyone else is already dressed. Kyle and Roger, David’s cabin-mates, were just about to leave to head to the dining hall. “Wait up for David,” Elliott called to them. “We’re hungry. Why do we have to wait for that loser?” they said. Kyle and Roger waited for David, but once Elliott was out of sight, they told David he’d have to walk a few steps behind them. “We don’t want anyone to think we’re actually your friend, okay?” Once inside, David got his tray and was walking over to his table when he tripped over his shoelaces he had forgotten to tie in the rush. He regained his balance, but his milk went flying up into the air and landed in a puddle on the floor. “Look, it’s like a circus act,” a kid yelled out and everyone at his table started to laugh and point at David. “I wonder if he does tricks with balls like those trained seals?” someone else asked. David liked to play sports, but he hated camp because he was the smallest of all the boys. That day, because it had started to rain, they were supposed to play basketball indoors, which was David’s very worst sport of all.
