One area particularly hard hit is THEeducation. Here in the Northwest, Adventist education REMOTEhas not gone unscathed. And yet, there remains a silver lining through the rapid shift to emergency remote learning. Kyle Pepple teaches math at Cascade Chris- tian Academy in Wenatchee, Washington. “We were in staff meeting starting to discuss what we were going to do if we needed to shut down,” LEARNINGPepple says. “That’s when we received the news that the governor had just announced that all Washington schools were closing the following week. We had two days to figure out our game plan — ‘OK, now what do we do?’” CCA educators were not alone in the scram- ble to shift classroom learning to digital remote learning. While the first few days may have been a little messy, teachers bent over backward to ensure students contin- ued learning in spite of being physically banned from their classrooms. For many educators, the first few days involved a herculean amount of research. What tools and resources would best serve not only the learning objectives for the class but also the individual learning needs of their students? Larger schools tasked teams of tech-savvy teachers to look at what would serve student learning best and made recommendations to the rest of the staff. The NPUC con- ferences and union education leaders also worked to make recommendations and sought to encourage and support the smaller schools during this radical pivot. A bright spot in the scramble to find resources and new digital ways to facilitate learning is that many Northwest Adventist educators were already using online learning tools as part of their daily curriculum. Nelita Davamony-Crawford, principal at Emerald Christian Academy in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, talks about her team’s challenges during the early days of the shutdown. “The technology was hard. It was a little chaotic starting out,” she explains. “Making sure to get resources to all our families was initially a challenge too.” When asked about the pivot to emergency remote learning, Pepple said, “We’re all in a different boat but the same storm. It certainly was a learning process. I was working with unfamiliar technology. He currently serves as director of Publishing Ministry, Spirit of Prophecy, and Voice of Prophecy in Myanmar Union Mission. He and his wife Vanramliani have three daughters and one son. Judson Chhakchhuak is from Mizoram, Northeast India. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Religion degree with an emphasis in the New Testament from the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies, the Philippines. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology degree from the Adventist University of the Philippines. John Leroy Christian was an Adventist administrator, pastor, missionary, researcher, professor, lieutenant-colonel, and author. Early Life John Leroy Christian was born on October 28, 1900, in Houston, Minnesota, in the United States. He was the second child of Andrew Ernest Christian (March 21, 1870-July 29, 1920) and Bertha K. Christian (April 2, 1878-June 20, 1962) who married on July 27, 1898.1 John Christian’s seven siblings were Hervey, Rolland, Alice, Andrew, Clarence, Paul, and Marie. Unfortunately, two of his siblings died when he was growing up. The information started to come in about a year ago. Whlle some of the responses were quite detalled, there were others that were rather general and indefinite. There were gaps and omissions and in several instances conflicting statements on certain events. In view of the limited time and the apparent cessation of incoming materials from the field, a small committee was named with Doctor Walton J. Brown as chairman. It was this committee's responsibility to execute the project in spite of the lack of substantiation of certain information. We believe that this is the first project of its kind in the denomination's history. It is hoped that when the various educators and administrators re­ view the data about their own organizations, they will notify the Department of Education concerning any corrections and additions. They should please include supporting evidence from as many sources as possible. It is hoped that within the next five to ten years a revised edition may replace this first one. It would contain not only necessary changes, but also would be brought up to date.
