It is one of the oldest recognized hunts in the United States, with roots dating back to 1883. For Collin McNeil, the new Joint Master, foxhunting at Radnor centers U on history and tradition, but also promotes preservation and growth of the unique sport. This past May, Collin was named Joint Master, alongside incumbent Michael Tillson. N “It was a great honor to be named Master,” said Collin. “It wasn’t something I expected or that I sought after. Through the years, I have done a lot of things because of my interest in and love of Radnor and becoming Master is really T exciting. Mike and I are a good team. We have a great time with it. ”

I Encouraging Interest in Hunting Although Collin has always been fascinated with Radnor’s history, he is also focused on the growth of hunting N and hopes to see more families and younger generations participating in the sport. “When Radnor Hunt moved to the country in 1931 it quickly became even more of a place to belong to in the area, like a country club. If we have 300 G family members, I’d say maybe 20-30% are involved in fox hunting in some way or another. The rest of the members

are members because it’s a fun place and they have equestrian interests, or they just happen to live nearby and it’s a nice club to belong to. I’d like to see the hunting membership grow; it would be great to see more young people join in.”

Facebook for Foxhunters One of the ways that Collin tries to appeal to the younger set is through the Radnor website and Facebook page, “Friends of Radnor Hunt,” which features regular updates about the club as well as photos taken by Collin while he is fox hunting. In addition to the website and Facebook page, Collin has also plans to start working with the Radnor Pony Club to encourage young riders to become more involved with Radnor. “The Pony Club is a large, active organization that actually owns its own property, which is somewhat unique in the Pony Club world, and it is adjacent to the Radnor Clubhouse. I’d love to see more kids get involved and I’d love to see more families participate so the hunt remains a vibrant welcoming operation that looks to the future, as well as the past.” Collin admits it is difficult to describe what makes foxhunting so unique, and truly a sport that a rider needs to try to understand. “I think it’s a camaraderie first and foremost, it is such a great group “[Foxhunting] is open to anybody who wants to ride and of people all sharing the same love of sport,” he explained. “I think enjoys the idea of sport and country pursuits. Individual dressage gold medalists Steffen Peters of the U.S.A. and Jan and Bruce Hlavacek’s suave Westphalian gelding Weltino’s Magic finished first all three days of dressage competition. “What an amazing day and an amazing competition,” said Peters. “I still have to think about the moment that I came out of the arena and when the scores were announced it probably took 30 seconds, but it seemed like three hours. It is a very exciting day, congratulations to my teammates. The big score that Heather pulled in – I don’t think I’ve ever had that much pressure going into the arena knowing that there was an 86 percent in front of me.” Photo by Allen MacMillan/MacMillan Photography

Individual eventing silver went to U.S. rider Hannah Sue Burnett and Jacqueline Mar’s Irish Sport Horse gelding Harbour Pilot of the U.S.A. Both Phoenix and Burnett were newcomers to riding for their countries’ teams. “I’m just really honored to be on this horse and this team,” said Burnett. “The team competition definitely had a bit more pressure; you want to make your team proud and your country proud.” Photo by Allen MacMillan/MacMillan Photography

His three best competition memories are winning the Amateur at the Palacio de Los Deportes (late ‘80s) in Mexico City and the 2008 E Alamo Cup at the Pin Oak (Houston) and being able to participate at Spruce Meadows as rider and this year, as Chef d’Equipe. Eduardo caters to hundreds of people, organizing trips around the world to international equestrian events: WEG, Finals, Pan American and Olympic Games.

I know that I am sometimes clumsy, forgetful, and often lucky to leave the house with both shoes on in the morning. My lack of organizational skills has caused me un-necessary stress that could have been easily diverted if only I had kept my head clear and focused…Sometimes this is easier said than done. I am sure it comes as no surprise that I find horse shows can be a little challenging. It’s not just getting to the ring on time; it’s getting to the right ring, on the right horse, to ride the right course…So much to do, so little TIME! It can be difficult to switch from riding the hunters to the jumpers, especially since I already have a problem going too slow in the latter. Typically I wait around for hours for my classes to start, and I know I am not alone. It seems that, without fail, the classes will all begin to run at exactly the same!

Keeping Track Changing horses in the same class is one thing, but having more than one horse, in more than one division, in more than one ring can cause all sorts of issues! Let the brain stress begin. I am a little in awe at how the trainers do it; they run from ring to ring, client to client, course to course and don’t lose their cool or break a sweat. How they keep track if it all is a wonder. Not that having multiple rides is something to complain about! I usually have a plan; get at least one hunter course done then jet over for the course walk, then back to the hunter ring, etc. until done. It doesn’t sound very hard right? Changing rings, horses and equipment is easy, but changing my style from (what I hope is) a flowing and smooth hunter round to (what I hope is) a speedy and smooth jumper trip can be more of a challenge. But I know that rushing, on a horse or off, is not good! Through trial and error, I’ve worked out a way to get through this without feeling panicked. I make myself take a deep breath and a minute to myself. It may be only 60 seconds, but it lets me find my focus and ride the course in my mind. Then all I need to do is pick up the reins and we’re ready to go.

On Course? Not Always! Of course, it wasn’t always this easy, and it doesn’t always work. I have gone off course quite a few times. I can still find myself getting a little lost, especially on the bigger jumper rings which have 18 jumps and four combinations filling my vision out of the turn. All I can say is thank goodness for flags and numbers! Anyway, I have promised to set some new goals for this year which include staying focused (from in my classes to riding my horses), relaxed, positive and having fun. Last but not least, STAY ON COURSE! Happy New Year everyone! E I found him when I went to visit my horse, Petey, who was spending several months relaxing in a field before I began the quest to find him a new partner. I rode Nick in a clinic L with Mattias Ekeroth and fell in love (with Nick, although Mattias was also very nice!) Nick is an older horse, and has so much experience. I When the trailer pulled up to McIntosh Stables, my show barn in Northern California, I couldn’t wait to take Nick to his stall and get him settled in to his new home. As I walked N him in, several people from neighboring barns commented on what a handsome horse I had and how lucky I was to have him. I certainly have to agree, Nick got blessed with E good looks. Like Magic S A few days later, when I had my first lesson on Nick, I was expecting the same lazy horse that I rode in the clinic. I was pleasantly surprised when we picked up a nice forward trot and Nick held himself in a frame. At the walk, Nick was looking at everything and trying to spook, but once I got his attention on me, it was like magic. I also figured out that Nick responds to voice commands. When we canter J around, I can say “whoa” and he will collect to a perfectly square halt. And from either the halt or the walk, I need merely to kiss twice and he will pick up the canter. I had R fun experimenting with him on the flat and figuring out the best way to ride him. Jumping was a different matter altogether. This complete program—superb bloodlines, excellent health care and careful training—has resulted in more than 35 years of making history at Iron Spring Farm. As the young stallions’ foal crops mature, the legacy continues.

The Show Jumping Hall of Famer and Olympic medalist partnered with the stallion Good Twist to win 21 international classes in the 60s. Gem L Twist, by Good Twist out of Coldly Noble, carried on the tradition of the Bonne Nuit line by jumping into the interna- tional spotlight from 1985-1997. L Sold to Michael Golden, the young gray proved to be a handful for his owner; but turned out to be just right for Greg Best, Frank’s student and the duo romped to team and individual silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, earning I two AGA Horse of the Year titles, ’87 & ‘89. In 1990, Gem was named “World’s Best Horse” at WEG in Stockholm. He competed successfully with Leslie Howard (AGA HOTY O ’92) and with Laura Chapot, racking up an impressive trio of American Grand Prix Association Horse Champion- ships, one for each of his three riders. It’s all a matter of N equestrian record: you can read about it at the Chapot’s Chado Farm website, named for their farm in New Jersey.

Gem’s clone was born in late summer 2008 and Gemini, sign of the twin, is literally a chip off the old block. Last summer he spent time at a quarantine facility so that semen could be collected for shipping to Europe. Once he was back at Chado, Gemini returned to light work under saddle. A select small group of test mares will foal later this year, and his first official season includes several mares booked to him by a prominent horseman. “It’s amazing how much Gemini looks like Gem at the same age – his markings, etc, and it’s been a pleasure for my dad to work with him,” says Laura Chapot. “Gemini has so many characteristics that are the same as Gem Twist, and it’s really nice to have that bloodline back – Bonne Nuit was so prominent when my parents were jumping. The focus was on the carefulness of the horse. I think the horses are going back to being quite careful. I see eventing going that way also.” As for the future of Gemini, here’s what Frank Chapot, who took that Bonne Nuit line and turned it into a jumper dynasty, has to say: “Why wouldn’t you want to breed to a stallion who’s bred to be the best stallion in the world?” Apples don’t fall far from the tree: even though not all foals are destined for Olympic glory, there is merit to breeding the best to Laura Chapot and Gemini after he was started under sad- the best. R By Dr. Beverly Gordon You might have seen professional and Olympic athletes wearing what appears to be colored tape on their bodies, S and probably wondered what it was. Cyclist Lance Armstrong ran the 2006 NY City Marathon wearing the tape; Olympian volleyball player Kerri Walsh E wore the tape during the 2008 Beijing Olympics; tennis player Serena Williams, soccer player David Beckham and Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics are just a few of the many professional athletes using the tape. Of course, it is only a matter of time before what is sometimes called “magic tape” makes its way to the equestrian community. I And not just for the riders, but for their horses as well. The Case No.1: I recently worked with a talented dressage horse that seemed to chronically have a “weak back”. Understandably, the trainer was frustrated because she was having difficulty N training the horse. The horse periodically seemed to struggle with movements which the trainer believed should have been easy for him and he showed evidence of recurring back soreness. After a discussion with the trainer and assessing the horse, I determined the best treatment for the horse would include a chiropractic adjustment, after which I applied Kinesio Tape. I taped the horse several times over a period of a few weeks, with slightly different tapings each time as indicated by my assessment. The horse trained with Kinesio Tape applied, and improved greatly. I also taped the trainer for a chronic knee issue which interfered with her riding. Both the horse and the trainer were taped, and both performed better as a result. Case No.2: Application of Kinesio tape for purposes of improving training and not just treating injured or sore tissues has shown great success. Justin Thompson, Director of Golf Wanderer’s Club, Wellington, FL demonstrates shoulder taping to aid in stability throughout golf swing revealed a bit of myofascitis along with trigger points in the gluteal muscles, not uncommon in working horses. He began training with the tape applied and after a re-examination he was greatly improved and the trainer said he noticed the horse would fatigue less quickly and train better. Specific Kinesio taping applications applied during exercise improves overall training potential and this use of the tape has proven to be of great value for performance horses! Some equine conditions (I am only listing a few here) which have responded well to Kinesio taping are: swelling/filling and inflammation, sacroiliac, back and hip issues and muscle tension and pain. I have found that lymphatic and support tapings for issues resulting from suspensory and other damaged lower leg structures also work very well. So, now you know the source of that mysterious tape seen on professional and non-professional athletes. Kinesio Taping Method is used by human athletes all over the world and because of its success, it is becoming increasingly popular. And now we can use it to help our equine athletes as well! R Kya Endreson, a quiet spoken working student from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, showed the dressage world what she was capable of at the 2011 Collecting Gaits E Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions when she claimed her first National Championship title. As a full-time working student for Scott and Susanne Hassler at Hassler S Dressage in Chesapeake City, Maryland, Kya won the National Junior Dressage Championship aboard Pik L, an 18 year old Hanoverian stallion owned by Anne Sparks of Horses Unlimited. S Kya led the country as the top junior throughout the season before sweeping the junior division at the Festival of Champions -- the only rider to score above 70% in both A performances. Kya’s successes and talents haven’t gone unnoticed, and the young star is being hailed as “one to watch” in the dressage world. She and Pik L recently G appeared on the cover of Dressage Today magazine. While Kya said she would be a show jumper if she weren’t a dressage rider, her riding career began when she tagged along with a friend to a riding lesson. “My best E friend started taking lessons and at the time I loved horses and knew that’s what I wanted to pursue. I started taking lessons at a local barn and learned the basics. I then became involved in Pony Club and eventing. Eventually dressage became my main interest and I fell in love with it.”

Sidelines: What was it like winning the Junior Dressage National Championships? KE: Winning the Junior National Championships was such an awesome experience. I owe so much to Anne Sparks, Scott Hassler and of course Pik L for making it possible. He is such an incredible horse and I am so lucky and thankful to have the ride on him. He has taught me so much and I continue to learn from him daily. I would say winning the Junior National Championship and the Team Gold medal at the 2011 Adequan FEI North American Junior/Young Rider Championships, also on Pik L, are definitely the highlights of my career so far.

Sidelines: Do you enjoy being a working student for the Hasslers? KE: It’s great. I have been a working student for the Hasslers for a little over a year. How often have you heard a L fellow instructor say, “I don’t know what happened; Bob rode with me for years and never indicated that he wanted to buy a horse and after he started riding with Jane, he bought a horse and is competing!” This type of scenario O and many others can be avoided by having your students participate in a simple goal setting exercise that you can review together twice a year.

Recognize Motivations Each person who decides to pursue an equestrian discipline has certain goals in mind. We egotistically assume, “Of course you want to learn to ride and improve!” However, that may not be the case. People are generally motivated by two factors. Either intrinsically, which comes from a personal level of drive or extrinsically, which may come from outside motivations such as peer, social or parental approval. As instructors, we have experienced both types and know that there are different needs to help each individual succeed and be content with their progress.

Goals for Your Students Goal setting should be done shortly after you begin training a new student. USPA Regional Polo Center Director, Erik Wright in Los Angeles provides a questionnaire that he asks his clients to fill out and review shortly after they have taken their first package of lessons. He asks them to set 10 long and short term goals that they would like to achieve in polo and then he takes time to review these goals on a one on one basis to make sure that he is clear on what they are saying. “I began asking for written goals from my clients in order to better understand their needs”, says Erik. “In the past I found myself pushing someone Kris Bowman is USPA National Club Development Director and with talent toward tournaments only to find out later that Director of Team USPA Programs. they were viewing polo solely as a hobby, and conversely, She can be reached at (703) 362-7656. there were others that I never suspected were interested in competing whom I overlooked. Erik suggests want to achieve, but if you task them with 10, they tend to narrow setting an ambitious 10 goals in order to include some down the focus and come up with specific attainable short term smaller more obtainable achievements that will keep the goals that can provide quicker gratification.” student’s confidence up. “If your client overfaces himself Ten Goals? Maybe Yes… Maybe No “A client may say that he would like to achieve a 10 goal handicap ,which may be unrealistic or long term, however further down in his list, he may say that he wishes to learn to post at the canter or learn to take penalty shots at the canter which are Let Us Handle All Your Insurance Claims completely obtainable”, says Erik. Goal setting is rewarding for everyone. Goals should be specific, trackable and achievable. The list should be reviewed and reinforced by email reminders or even written on index cards to be kept in gear bags for easy access. Once goal setting is in place, the instructor will have a better understanding of their client’s needs. With this improved communication, they will have a much better idea of where they can help their student succeed and the client will see measurable results of achievement that are 3103 Fortune Way, Wellington, FL Wellington Commerce Park • personal which should help reinforce their improvement on a scale 561.790.4433 fax: 790.6366 MV38096 that is important to them, not compared to the success of others.
