A:This MWF Resident Auditioned for Jeopardy. Q: Who is Elizabeth Waller?

It all began last fall, when I finally realized it was time to stop yelling at the television when all the con- testants missed a clue that was patently obvious to ME. “Where do they get these morons?” I wondered, secure in the knowledge that I would WIPE THE FLOOR with these hapless pipsqueaks (except for Ken Jennings, of course). When host Alex Trebek casually mentioned that registration was open for the Jeopardy! online test, I jumped online and filled out the form; in two days, I received my test date and assigned start time. This is where things got a little more challenging (you knew that was coming, didn’t you?). As the date approached, I devoured all the information on the Jeopardy! web site. I learned that the test would be composed of 50 questions that would appear on my computer screen. I would have eight seconds to provide a response to each question. Fortunately, I would NOT have to phrase my answer in the form of a question. It was now test time. I took a deep breath, wiped the perspiration off my typing fingers and signed on. The whole thing was over in less than ten minutes and my brain actually hurt! While some of the questions were fairly easy, others referred to people or places I’ve never heard of. Admittedly, some responses constituted an outright blind guess. Could it be that I wasn’t quite as smart as I thought I was? After signing off, I had a stiff drink and put the experience behind me, appropriately humbled and determined not to scoff at those people who had actually passed the darned thing. Imagine my surprise in early April when I received an email informing me that not only had I passed the online test, but also that I was being invited (at my own expense) to an in-person Jeopardy! audition! My practical side forced me to decline. It was in Toledo, Ohio and I live in Florida for heavens sake! After three days, of an endless stream of harassment from family and friends, I capitulated and made plans to get to the May 1, 2012 morning audition. I spent my time on the airplane studying lists of state capitals, US Presidents, and countries of the world (can anyone tell me what happened to Yugoslavia??) so I felt reasonably prepared. A friend met me at the plane and kept me sane on the drive to the Hilton, where we settled on a conservative outfit, rejecting suggestions of colorful streaks in my hair and unusual piercings. The next morning I met the 17 strangers who were my competitors. Two thirds of them were apparently male, approximately 25 years old, self-described graduate students. The rest were similarly aged fe- males (duh), also mostly graduate students. Even though they were from all over the East Coast, I had come the farthest. For some it was a second or third try. The atmosphere was initially tense, but warmed up with the heroic efforts of the cheery and energetic show “Coordinators”. All those invited to these auditions are entered into the “contestant pool” of about 1,000 people. Only about 400 slots are available in each season. Your standing on the list is determined by the results of the audition—your presentation, your , and of course, your ability to do well answering Jeopardy!-style ques- tions. We were then presented with a new test. Here is where I got an inkling of where my problems would surface in the “real” game. I knew most of the answers but had trouble retrieving them within the time allotted. By leaving blanks and moving on, I was able to fill them in later as the answers finally bubbled to the surface. Of course, I realized that this was not allowed on live television, so I knew I was in for a challenge in the next phase, which involved playing a “mock” Jeopardy! game with two other people— complete with buzzers. Sure enough, I was neither fast on the buzzer nor fast with the answers (this time phrased as a ques- tion). My only points came from answering correctly when someone else had missed the clue on the first try. Amazingly enough, I knew the name of Beyonce’s new baby and something about the Jonas Broth- ers… go figure. This was definitely the most difficult and anxiety-producing part of the audition. No wonder these kids were all 25—they still had reflexes and they didn’t have 59 years of accumulated gar- bage to sift through to find the necessary factoids buried in their brain cells! The final part of the audition was a brief stand-up interview based on a sheet of personal information we had submitted. The Coordinators did a fine job of putting us at ease and I think I was able to project the fact that I was unlikely to cry uncontrollably, scream out obscenities, or stare blankly into space if they put me on the show. See what happens next. Continued on Page 10……. CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Your Club or Activity

If you want to promote your club or know of an activity in MWF or somewhere else local that you think would appeal to our members, send the appropriate information to the editor via email. Articles written in WORD are best, since I can cut and paste. Photos in jpg format are good. Don’t worry if they’re not perfect, I often crop them or lighten them for the newsletter. It’s always more interesting if you include something your club has done or will be doing. Pictures from your activities also always enhance the information. Thinking of starting a club and want to know if anyone else is interested, that can be posted too. Come across an article that you think would be useful to us, or want to start a column on a particular topic? Go for it. Just remember, nothing controversial. We want to keep the attitude positive and the editor is responsible for keeping it that way. This is your forum. Make it work for you. [email protected]

MWF Exercise Club

Jeopardy Audition continued….The whole process took about two and a half hours, and I left feeling rather encouraged—not by my prowess, but by my unique demographic identity. Since in my experience the average Jeopardy! viewer is a “mature” female, they need me on the show so that for once, all of us old broads can cheer for someone who looks like us! Of course, my chances might be even better if I weren’t a librarian—apparently teachers, librarians and attorneys are the most common professions represented—but still, I think I may have a better-than-average chance of actually getting “the call”. Winning is, of course, another matter. I don’t have a snowball’s chance in you-know-where of that, but who cares? The next step? I wait. The contestant pool is valid for 18 months. When you get called, you generally have three weeks’ notice to book a flight (yes, at your own expense) to Los Angeles to make your appearance. IF you win one game, the show starts to pick up your expenses. Since even the third place winner receives $1,000, I might just break even… but what fun it could be! Stay tuned to see what happens… JOIN MEADWOW WOOD FARMS ASSOCIATION
