Abstract The history, contents, and dates of publication are presented for the first one hundred vol- umes of the Bishop Museum Occasional Papers , which began publishing in 1898. An index of the authors and co-authors of over 850 articles in its 110-year history is also given.

Introduction As one of the oldest continuing American scientific publishers west of the Mississippi, the Bishop Museum Press scholarly publications contain some of the most critical scientific papers on cultural and natural history of Hawai‘i and the Pacific during its over 100-year tenure. During its publishing history, the Press has published a number of journal series and one of these, the Occasional Papers, recently published its 100th volume and is the subject of this study. A short history of its beginnings is given as well as a list of the con- tents. Since many of the papers published in this series deal with the of plants and and establishing accurate dates of publication for original proposals of new taxa are critical to ascertaining priority of names, a detailed table of the earliest dates of publication that could be found are presented in Appendix I. A complete index to all authors (including co-authors) is presented in Appendix II.

Materials and Methods The Library and Archives of the Bishop Museum have traditionally deposited on their shelves four copies of every museum publication. I have examined all available copies for titles, authorship, pages, and dates of publication. Obtaining the dates of publication of each published issue involved: 1) examining printed dates on the covers; 2) checking receipt records in the library, which included date-of-receipt stamps on the issues them- selves and/or the entry log in the serials cardex file (the cardex log was abandoned for a computer entry system in 2007 but the date stamping continues); and 3) checking the min- utes of the meetings of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. Digitization of as many of the issues of the Occasional Papers as were available for scanning was initiated and the resulting pdf files can be found (along with other of the Museum’s many scholarly publi- cations) on the Bishop Museum’s Scholarly Publications website at: http://hbs.bishopmu- seum.org/pubs-online/index.html. 2 BISHOP MUSEUM OCCASIONAL PAPERS: No. 101, 2008

Brief History of the Occasional Papers The Bishop Museum Press began publishing in 1892 with its first Special Publication1, which was “A preliminary catalogue of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History” by the museum’s then curator and later first director, Dr. William T. Brigham. The quixotic Brigham was an ambitious and dogmatic curator and upon arriving at Bishop Museum from Boston, quickly advocated a publishing program. Unfortunately, this sort of venture was not keenly supported at the time by the Museum’s founder and patron, Charles Reed Bishop, who held the view that museums should not be in the publishing business. Despite this rebuff, the strong-willed Brigham eventually gained support of the Museum’s board of directors to buy a printing press to make muse- um labels and, once it was on the Museum’s grounds, quickly put it to business churning out publications! The Museum continued to typeset, print, and bind its own publications on-site until 1919 when the staff printer retired and his duties in the publication process were finally outsourced to a more cost-efficient printer, the Star-Bulletin in Honolulu, which was at the time the major newspaper in the city. A few years after the “Preliminary Catalogue” appeared, Brigham decided to start a more “regular” publication of the Museum but gave it the lengthy (and possibly ironic— for a regular publication) moniker of “Occasional Papers of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History”. The “Occasional Papers” name no doubt arose from Brigham’s close association with the Boston Society of Natural History, which had its own “Occasional Papers” series, and of which he was a member of the publications committee. The first issues of the Museum’s Occasional Papers series were primarily the results of Brigham’s work but also had short papers by others, most of whom were employed by or volunteered at the Museum. Restricting the Occasional Papers as primarily a house journal was kept up throughout Brigham’s tenure as director. However, when he stepped down at the end of 1917 and Dr. Herbert Gregory came on board late in the following year as the Museum’s second director, striking changes to museum research activities took place. Gregory helped establish a collaborative research program with Yale University, the Museum-sponsored expeditions throughout the Pacific, scientists worldwide participated in those expeditions and were asked to work on the Museum’s burgeoning Hawaiian and Pacific collections, and the results of these investigations were encouraged to be published in the Museum’s growing scientific publication series including in the Occasional Papers. Through inevitable oscillations over the decades in numbers of publications as a result of financial and other factors, the Occasional Papers continues to this day to publish rela- tively short papers on the results of research in Hawai‘i and the Pacific, chiefly by muse- um staff and associates.

Names and Methods of Publication The Occasional Papers has gone through a few name changes and format since its incep- tion. It was first called the Occasional Papers of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History and contained directors’ reports and short papers on the collection and trips and scientific expeditions by staff. This title remained

1. The major serial publications of the Bishop Museum Press include the Occasional Papers (1898–date), Special Publications (1892–date), Memoirs (1899–1949), and Bulletins (1922–date; split into separate disciplinary Bulletins in 1987). Evenhuis—Bishop Museum Occasional Papers Publication and History 3 in force for the first 8 volumes (1898–1923). It varied in how it was paginated, with some volumes continuously paginated through different issues and others with separate pagina- tion for each issue of the volume. Volumes were issued in parts, each part was covered with a wrapper of varying colors (primarily shades of brown or green) made of card stock (Fig. 2), and had a page size of 6 x 9 inches. A few years after Gregory became director, he changed the title to the Bernice P. Bishop Museum Occasional Papers and the journal ran under that name from 1930 through 1937 (volumes 9–12). The method of publication for the new series changed to a fascicle format in which each fascicle contained a single article with separate pagination. Each fas- cicle was issued without the wrapper that typified the previous series (cf. Figs. 3–4). The next change coincided with the retirement of Gregory in 1936 and arrival of the Museum’s next director, Sir Peter Buck. The name was immediately changed to the Occasional Papers of Bernice P. Bishop Museum. The fascicle format (one article per fas- cicle) remained as did the absence of the wrapper but the pagination was continuous with- in each volume (cf. Fig. 5). This version of the series with that journal title and format was published from 1937 through 1984. A slight change of format of the masthead occurred with volume 24 (1968–1980) (Fig. 6) and some issues had printed the first color images for the journal. A colored wrapper appeared again, but only briefly (for volume 25; 1982–1984) and contained a cutout to reveal the masthead, author, and title of the article (Fig. 7); there was an increased page size (to 7 x 9 inches); and separate pagination for each issue within the volume was resurrected. In 1986, coinciding with the arrival of the Museum’s then new director Dr. W. Donald Duckworth, numerous changes took place in the operations of the Press, including cessa- tion of its entomological titles (e.g., Pacific , Pacific Insects Monographs, and the Journal of Medical Entomology), and the editing and publishing of the Museum’s scholar- ly publications being outsourced for a few years. The Occasional Papers continued publi- cation but under a new title, the Bishop Museum Occasional Papers, to better reflect the incorporated name of the museum, which changed from Bernice P. Bishop Museum to Bishop Museum in February 1975. The method of publication also changed with papers appearing approximately once per year in a single volume format (Fig. 8). This method of publication remained from 1986–1991. In 1993, the Museum’s editorial committee decid- ed to go back to a fascicle format (one article per fascicle), number each fascicle as a sep- arate volume, each with separate pagination (cf. Fig. 9), and go back to the 6 x 9-inch page format. This has been the method of publication to date, although a number of fascicles were published under a “theme” with separate editorship for that theme containing a num- ber of articles in each fascicle. This latter case is exemplified in two current series, the Records of the Hawaii Biological Survey (begun in 1995) and F iji (begun in 2004).

Publication Statistics In the 110 years of publishing the first 100 volumes of the Occasional Papers, 852 arti- cles have been published by 484 authors. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic representation of the numbers of papers published per year. The graph shows a small number of publica- tions for the first few decades and a substantial increase in publishing as a direct result of museum-sponsored scientific expeditions and resulting research in the 1930s. After WWII there was a resulting slow-down in publishing, and this did not pick up again until the arrival of then new director Dr. Edward Creutz, who witnessed another relatively small 4 BISHOP MUSEUM OCCASIONAL PAPERS: No. 101, 2008 Number of papers published per year showing increased activity in the 1930s and 1900s to date. The numbers per year during the 1980s remained about the same but another significant increase in activity started in the mid-1990s as a result of the initiation of the annual Records of the Hawaii Biological Survey. The HBS Records are essentially the vehicle of dissemination for the Museum’s state-mandated program of the Hawaii Biological Survey and publish new state and island records of plants and animals newly found (including native and introduced species) in the Hawaiian Islands. In 2005 another series began: Fiji Arthropods, which publish the results of surveys of arthropods of Fiji through the partial financial support from the National Science Foundation and Schlinger Foundation.

APPENDIX I. Dating of the Occasional Papers Vagaries Noted in Dating of Issues Most of the dating below is fairly straightforward and derives from either dates printed on each issue/article fascicle or derives from the dates of receipt stamped by the staff of the Bishop Museum Library. The Library did not begin to stamp a date of receipt on journals coming into the collection until 1930, so dates of publication of issues previous to that year could only be taken from the dates printed on the issues themselves. For journals coming in from outside of Hawai‘i, these stamped dates of receipt provide a minimum date and reflect only the date on which the library staff member stamped the journal when it was mailed in and not necessarily the earliest date of publication of that journal issue. In contrast, for the Bishop Museum publications, they more accurately reflect the date on which journals were received from the printer or editor to be placed in the collections and can be taken as authoritative. However, there are some anomalies that require explanation. Some dates of receipt listed below as the earliest dates of publication are later than the printed date and are taken here as the actual publication date rather than the printed date. Those that are listed as such have been verified and result from two types of delays: 1) During the years 1930–1968, proofs from the printer had an “assumed” or “esti- mated” publication date printed on the first page of each article. Those proofs that were sent to authors residing in Hawai‘i would virtually always come back on time and get printed and published close to and sometimes even before the printed date. However, proofs sent to authors not residing in Hawai‘i sometimes arrived late and printing the final version sometimes took place without changing the printed date. In the latter case, when the library received the copies from the printer or editor, the actual date would then some- times be later than the printed date. For those instances where I was not able to verify the delay, the printed date is kept as the date of publication. Further research into correspon- dence between editor and author for issues in which the printed date is in question may show a more accurate date and one that is later than the printed date. 2) The attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 caused inevitable delays in issuance of the museum’s scholarly publications due to cessation of many activities in Hawai‘i and the effects of attack on mail service in the weeks immediately afterward. Printing of scholarly publications by the museum’s contracted printer no doubt took on other more urgent priorities and delays in the mail caused a few issues that were dated with various days in “December 1941” to not be received by the library until after the first of the following year.
