MADAGASCAR: The Wonders of the “8th Continent” A Tropical Birding Custom Trip October 20—November 6, 2016 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos taken during this trip by Ken Behrens Annotated bird list by Jerry Connolly TOUR SUMMARY Madagascar has long been a core destination for Tropical Birding, and with the opening of a satellite office in the country several years ago, we further solidified our expertise in the “Eighth Continent.” This custom trip followed an itinerary similar to that of our main set-departure tour. Although this trip had a definite bird bias, it was really a general natural history tour. We took our time in observing and photographing whatever we could find, from lemurs to chameleons to bizarre invertebrates. Madagascar is rich in wonderful birds, and we enjoyed these to the fullest. But its mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects are just as wondrous and accessible, and a trip that ignored them would be sorely missing out. We also took time to enjoy the cultural riches of Madagascar, the small villages full of smiling children, the zebu carts which seem straight out of the Middle Ages, and the ingeniously engineered rice paddies. If you want to come to Madagascar and see it all… come with Tropical Birding! Madagascar is well known to pose some logistical challenges, especially in the form of the national airline Air Madagascar, but we enjoyed perfectly smooth sailing on this tour. We stayed in the most comfortable hotels available at each stop on the itinerary, including some that have just recently opened, and savored some remarkably good food, which many people rank as the best Madagascar Custom Tour October 20-November 6, 2016 they have ever had on any birding tour. -

As with all remotely sensed or publicly available data, all features should be verified with a site visit, as the locations of suitable landscapes or areas containing flood threats and community assets are approximate. The data, maps, and analysis provided should be used only as a screening-level resource to support management decisions. This report should be used strictly as a planning reference tool and not for permitting or other legal purposes. Super Typhoon Yutu Relief & Recovery Update #4 POST-DECLARATION DAMAGE ASSESSMENT COMPLETED; RELIEF MANPOWER ON-ISLAND READY TO SUPPORT; FEEDER 1, PARTIAL 1 & 2 BACK ONLINE Release Date: October 29, 2018 On Sunday, October 28, 2018, CNMI Leadership and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducted a Post-Declaration Damage Assessment. Saipan, Tinian and Rota experienced very heavy rainfall and extremely high winds which caused damages to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure. Utility infrastructure on all three islands has been visibly severely impacted to include downed power lines, transformers and poles. Driving conditions remain hazardous as debris removal operations are still underway. At the request of Governor Ralph DLG. Torres, representatives from FEMA Individual Assistance (IA) and the US Small Business Administration (SBA) joined the CNMI on an Aerial Preliminary Damage Assessment of Saipan, Tinian and Rota. A Taxonomic Review of the Genus Zosterops in East Africa, with a Revised List of Species Occurring in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania
Scopus 37(1): 1–13, January 2017 A taxonomic review of the genus Zosterops in East Africa, with a revised list of species occurring in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania David J. Pearson and Donald A. Turner Summary Species limits among East African white-eyes Zosterops are reviewed. Recent molecu- lar studies have revealed that arrangements such as those of Britton (1980), with just three species, and Fry (2000), with four species, are unsatisfactory. Most of the isolated highland forms which have been grouped under Z. poliogaster evolved independently and warrant treatment as full endemic species. Forms hitherto treated as subspecies of Z. senegalensis have been recovered within two divergent African clades. Within a northern clade Z. stuhlmanni appears best split pro tempore from Z. senegalensis (sensu stricto). Within a southern clade, stierlingi and anderssoni may be treated as subspecies of Z. anderssoni. The pale yellow-bellied forms, included until now within Z. abys- sinicus, were found in a different lineage from northeast African grey-bellied forms, and must be treated under Z. flavilateralis. With the inclusion of Z. vaughani of Pemba Island this results in a total of eleven East African species. These are listed with details of all constituent subspecies, distributions and synonyms. Occurrence within Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda is summarized in an appendix. Introduction The abundance of African white-eye forms, most of them morphologically similar, has long presented problems for taxonomists, in particular the placement of their spe- cies limits. To understand whether such population differentiation may reflect low levels of dispersal and gene flow at a very small spatial scale, we examined population structure and gene flow by analysing variation at 11 microsatellite loci among four geographically close localities (o26 km apart) sampled within the distribution range of one of the colour forms, the brown-headed brown form. Our results revealed levels of genetic differentiation that are exceptionally high for birds at such a small spatial scale. This strong population structure appears to reflect low levels of historical and contemporary gene flow among populations, unless very close geographically (o10 km). Thus, we suggest that the Re´union grey white-eye shows an extremely reduced propensity to disperse, which is likely to be related to behavioural processes. IXL ZOSTEROPIDZE FROM THE SOLOMON ISLANDS BY ROBERT CUSHMAN MURPHY In the eighth paper of this series, Dr. Hartert has reported upon a collection of birds from the Solomon Islands. The following notes are based upon longer series, than those to which he had access, of some of the same Zosteropidae, and upon additional specimens that have come to the American Museum since the former consignment was sent to Tring. All of the skins were obtained by Messrs. Beck, Hamlin, Richards, Dr. Drowne, and their associates of the Whitney South Sea Expedition, during 1927 and 1928. They comprise birds from twenty islands of the Solomons, including Rennell, which lies some distance off the southern end of the main chain. Dr. Hartert has remarked in various papers that further revision of the large and complicated genus Zosterops will lead to a new grouping of certain names now used binomially, when the status of many forms as geographic representatives of others becomes established. In the fol- lowing notes an attempt has been made to indicate the subspecific rela- tionships of certain birds that have been, or might be, described as full species. Zosterops has penetrated in such an astonishing way into almost innumerable insular groups over a large part of the world, and has been enabled, because of the resulting isolation, to split up into so many strains with more or less striking differences, that a final monograph of the family must await far more thorough collecting and detailed systematic description. -

Three Disaster Recovery Centers to Open in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Tomorrow Release Date: November 8, 2018 SAIPAN, MP — Effective tomorrow, Friday, November 9, 2018, three Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will be open to assist residents who suffered damages and property loss due to Typhoon Yutu and Typhoon Mangkhut. The DRCs will open in Tinian, Saipan, and Rota. A DRC provides residents an opportunity to meet face-to-face with representatives from the Commonwealth, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to answer questions about temporary housing, home repairs, replacement of damaged personal property, home and business recovery funding and other disaster-related needs.
