Queridos amigos: El origen de Cartas a Ofelia está en las narraciones surgidas inicialmente a partir de las cartas que escribía cada semana a mi madre, Ofelia Valdés Ríos, contándole mis experiencias del exilio parisino. En ellas cuento lo que veo y siento: filmes, obras de teatro, museos, exposiciones, los libros que leo, las relaciones con los galos, la sociedad francesa, la política, Cuba vista desde aquí, los viajes por 76 países a lo largo de estos 38 años, mis éxitos y mis fracasos, mis nostalgias y mi amor por la Libertad, las relaciones con personalidades del exilio, 4 Desde las orillas del Sena mi trabajo en el Instituto y en la Universidad como profesor de Civilización Latinoamericana, las relaciones con colegas, alumnos y estudiantes, etc., en resumen, es la experiencia vivida por una familia cubana en todos estos años.Además aparecen los testimonios de numerosas personas que han logrado conquistar la Libertad. En realidad son mis Memorias de Exilio. He contado numerosas anécdotas sobre mi infancia en mi querido pueblo natal de Camajuaní (1949-1959), así como de mi adolescencia y juventud habaneras (1959- 1981). Il ricco programma della Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze del 2019 si inaugura con una piccola ma importante esposizione che ha come fil rouge la tutela del patrimonio culturale. 7 Desde las orillas del Sena Ideata e curata dal direttore della Galleria Cecile Hollber la mostra Nuove Acquisizioni 2016-2018 sarà visibile dal 22 gennaio al 5 maggio 2019 e presenterà alcuni capolavori che, in maniere diverse, sono giunti ad arricchire le collezioni permanenti, grazie all’impegno e alla dedizione di diversi Enti sapientemente coordinati dalla Direzione del Museo. La provenienza delle opere ha seguito iter diversificati: alcune sono state acquistate sul mercato antiquario, altre sono pervenute grazie a generose donazioni, altre da confische in seguito all’esportazione illecita ad opera del Nucleo Patrimonio dei Carabinieri, altre, infine, sono giunte in Galleria dai depositi della Certosa di Firenze. Le tavole acquisite nel 2017 con i fondi ordinari della Galleria dell’Accademia sono due raffinati sportelli provenienti da un tabernacolo disperso di Mariotto di Nardo. I pannelli frammentati sono stati comprati da due diversi proprietari e ricomposti dopo l’acquisto. Il tabernacolo, impreziosito da raffinate decorazioni in pastiglia dorata che racchiudono le figure dei santi, è sicuramente frutto di una committenza prestigiosa ed è stato eseguito da Mariotto di Nardo intorno al 1420. I pannelli che in origine erano certamente di dimensioni maggiori, includevano molto probabilmente altre due coppie di santi, purtroppo perdute o fino ad oggi non ritrovate. I quattro frammenti oggi ricomposti si trovavano, alla fine dell’Ottocento, esposti in sale diverse 8 Desde las orillas del Sena della raccolta Corsini, nell’omonimo palazzo fiorentino in riva all’Arno. Ben quattro opere sono giunte nel 2016 al Museo da un deposito situato presso la Certosa di Firenze. Si tratta di una Incoronazione della Vergine e angeli di Mariotto di Nardo; di una SS. Trinità del Maestro del 1419; di una Madonna col Bambino in trono fra angeli del Maestro del 1416 e di una Madonna col Bambino e santi di Bicci di Lorenzo. A causa di una cattiva condizione di conservazione, l’Incoronazione di Mariotto di Nardo e la SS. Trinità del Maestro del 1419, sono stati recuperati nei loro valori pittorici da un accurato lavoro di restauro. Due strepitose opere come I due santi di Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, in origine scomparto destro di un trittico disperso, e la Madonna dell’Umiltà del raro Maestro della Cappella Bracciolini, sono state assegnate alla Galleria dopo il brillante recupero da parte del Reparto Operativo dei Carabinieri del Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale di Roma. Il bellissimo piccolo busto del drammaturgo Giovan Battista Niccolini (1782-1861) di Lorenzo Bartolini era esposto all’ultima edizione della Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato di Firenze, è stato generosamente acquistato e donato al Museo dall’Associazione Amici della Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze. La scultura non era ancora presente nello studio del maestro in un 9 Desde las orillas del Sena elenco redatto al momento della morte dell’artista mentre un ritratto del letterato fu presentata pochi anni dopo a Firenze, dagli eredi dell’artista pratese, all’Esposizione Italiana agraria, industriale ed artistica del 1861. Ricomparsa qualche anno fa nel mercato antiquario, grazie a questa donazione, la scultura in marmo e il modello in gesso, già custodito nella gipsoteca, saranno riuniti nel Museo. Una piccola grande mostra - afferma il direttore Cecilie Hollberg - che ci riempie d’orgoglio poiché ci da la possibilità di presentare al pubblico veri e propri capolavori che sono stati recuperati, restaurati e salvati da una sicura dispersione grazie alla dedizione di molte persone che lavorano, come noi della Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, per la salvaguardia del patrimonio culturale e artistico. París, 11 de diciembre de 2019. Querida Ofelia: Hoy te contaré el final de nuestro bello viaje de 22 días desde París hasta São Paulo. El lunes 10 de diciembre de 2018, el puerto de Santos fue la última escala de nuestro crucero. Llegamos con +22°c. Durante la noche habíamos cruzado el Trópico de Capricornio. Nuestro último día a bordo había sido extraordinario: El “Mercadillo de Navidad” con hasta -70% de rebajas sobre numerosos artículos (gafas, relojes, perfumes, 14 Desde las orillas del Sena carteras, joyas, etc.); “Il Salotto del Tè” donde probamos distintos tipos de té acompañados de canapés variados, repostería, etc. La noche a bordo fue muy festiva con el espectáculo “Ice & Fire” en Il Teatro Herminia y la “Fiesta de despedida” en el Atrio dei Diamanti. Todo comparable a las grandes festividades que tuvieron lugar el lunes 3 de diciembre al cruzar la Línea del Ecuador, con una gran fiesta para recibir al dios Neptuno, el cual le dio la Llave de los Mares al capitán y a continuación el espectáculo “Enchanted Castle” seguido de un extraordinario “Rock & Roll Party.” Después de abandonar el camarote fuimos a despedirnos del maître Salvatore Gallea en Il Ristorante Duca d’Orléans durante el desayuno.

    Christina Ulowetz Visual Essay Japanese Modernism across Media (EALC 335) Professor Schoneveld 15 May, 2015 More Real than Reality: How the Human Body Functions in Japanese Surreal Art The human body is frequently the subject of visual art and the basis of metaphor in written; such a universal and relatable symbol functions understandably well across all eras and genres of art. A fundamental part of the human experience, the body, as well as its functions and capabilities, establish a common ground between artist and viewer. Japanese surreal art saw a novel change, however, in the treatment of the body in visual art. The groundbreaking art movement paid no heed to the limits of reality and depicted the body in a variety of shocking, unnatural situations and positions. Surrealism saw the human body combined with other bodies in bizarre ways, appearing in impossible contexts, and even incorporated into inorganic matter like machinery. The manipulation of the body fit aesthetically into surrealism’s strange and unsettling atmosphere. Yet the deliberately unsettling choices function well to communicate complex themes. By perverting and changing the body in recognizable ways, surreal artists explored the changing perspective of the Japanese people both on an individual and national level. Japanese surrealism reflects a long history of disparate influences, culminating in a unique artistic experience. In fact, the very linguistic origin of Japanese surrealism reveals a unique and significant approach to the international avant-garde movement. The English word "surrealism" comes from the Latin roots meaning "below reality", as if the idea were something primitive or basic. But the Japanese word for surrealism, "chou-genjitsushugi", uses an emphatic prefix meaning "ultra" or "super".

(October 3 –December 14, 2019) Tetsuya Ishida: Self-Portrait of Other is the first retrospective exhibition of the work of Tetsuya Ishida (Yaizu, Shizuoka, 1973–Tokyo, 2005) to be held out of Japan. It brings together a significant selection of around 70 paintings and drawings, from 1996, the year he finished his degree in fine art at Musashino University, Tokyo, to 2004, shortly before his sudden death. His paintings, drawings, and notebooks are an extraordinary testimony to the malaise and alienation of contemporary subjects in advanced capitalism. A cult artist in his own country, where his imaginary world has become a reference for younger generations, his sharply critical work was presented in Europe at the 56 Venice Biennale in 2015. Ishida’s skeptical, nihilistic realism bears witness to today’s normalization of precarity and consumption in every sphere of life. The characters in his works are hybrid, anthropomorphic machines who embody a state of total technological domination and limitless subordination to a new, inescapable form of slavery that makes no distinction between work and consumption and heightens the anxiety of our bodies and subjectivities. Ishida’s bitter social satire cuts away at the Japanese postwar financial miracle, stripping it of any idealistic consideration. Although the 1973 petrol crisis briefly affected scientific, industrial, and technological growth in Japan, the country’s developmental trend was boosted in the 1980s at the height of real estate speculation, which led to the bursting in 1991 of the financial bubble and the deep depression that followed.

A wall was a wall, but having spent time looking at it, it drifted uncanny. There was no longer “a” recognisable “wall”, and soon there would be no “w a l l”. In the study of language, the relationship between writing and sound is taken to be arbitrary. No inherent relationship can necessarily be established between the spoken form of this name, or any part of this form, and the object it is identified with. The structures and contents of these names seem as though they are constrained only by the biology of their speakers, so what would a name be outside of any human brain or brain-like apparatus? The sound of…1 emerged from this stream of consciousness. Where my works had up to this point emphasised the visual disintegration of figures, it now turned to the disintegration of abstract representations; the dissolution of lexical objects, categories, meta-things. The segments comprising the names of the objects that surrounded me were free to go where they pleased, and I obliged them in having their new names read aloud. Some attention had to be paid to the enunciation of these names, so that they would appear as if they were perfectly ordinary. Anything less would be an insult. While this piece was initially satisfactory, it was clear that the concept behind it had not been fully explored.

In the early 21st-century digital age, its sources now include the terror of online bullying and identity theft, the nullification of truth by cynical politicians, unfathomable sexual abuse by religious leaders, endless war-making for profit, continuous economic uncertainty, and the ever- quickening destruction of the planet, which undeniably threatens life itself. With wifi-connected appliances linked into the so-called internet of things, forget about Big Brother — the washing machine and the water heater are eavesdropping on a homeowner’s every word. What is there about life today that doesn’t provoke a little existential angst? He was born in 1964 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He studied sculpture at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in 1994-1997, and also attended the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art from 1994-1996. Neto named the Russian Constructivist and American Minimalist art movements and considered the 1960s Brazilian Neo-concretist movement as the most influential for his artistry pattern. Drawing from Neo-concretism, Biomorphism and minimalist sculpture, along with other Brazilian vanguard movements of the 1960s & 70s, the he both references and incorporates organic shapes and materials – spices, sand and shells among them—that engage all five senses, producing a new type of sensory perception that renegotiates boundaries between artwork and viewer, the organic and manmade, the natural, spiritual and social worlds.

I tried to make myself—my weak self, my pitiful self, my anxious self—into a joke or something funny that could be laughed at…It was sometimes seen as a parody or satire referring to contemporary people. As I continued to think about this, I expanded it to include consumers, city-dwellers, workers, and the Japanese people. —Tetsuya Ishida Gagosian Hong Kong is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Tetsuya Ishida, the gallery’s first presentation of his work. This is the first exhibition of Ishida’s paintings outside of Japan. Ishida came of age as a painter during Japan’s “lost decade,” a time of nationwide economic recession that lasted through the 1990s. In his afflictive paintings, he captured the feelings of hopelessness, claustrophobia, and emotional isolation that burdened him and dominated Japanese society. From his early career until his untimely death in 2005, Ishida provided vivid allegories of the challenges to Japanese life and morale in paintings and graphic works charged with dark Orwellian absurdity. In nightmarish scenes, suited figures made in Ishida's own likeness but possessing machine or animal parts are depicted being boxed and repaired, like helpless objects.
