- 3 - Brief Description

- 4 - A rotary evaporator is a specially designed instrument for the evaporation of under vacuum. The evaporator consists of a heating bath with a rotating flask, in which the liquid is distributed as a thin film over the hot wall surfaces and can evaporate easily. The evaporation rate is regulated by the heating bath temperature, the size of flask, the pressure of and the speed of rotation. Advantages of the rotary evaporator (compared with static apparatus): With a vacuum rotary evaporator you can carry out single-stage distillation runs quickly and gently.

Rotary evaporators are mainly used for: 1. Distillation of solvent 2. Concentration of solutions and suspensions 3. Crystallization or recrystallization 4. Synthesis and purifying of fine chemicals 5. Soxhlet extraction 6. Powder and granules drying 7. Recycling of solvent

Based on the successful experience, HNZXIB Instruments supply 2L, 3L, 5L, 10L, 20L, 50L rotary evaporators. Advantages

Installation

RE-5002 rotary evaporator is composed of three parts: the mechanical parts, the glass parts and the heating bath. Installation steps

- 7 - are as follow: 1. Screw vacuum gauge rod to the stainless steel rack hand-tight. 2. Remove one screw nut of the rack. Screw the rack to the base plate then tighten the nut on and make sure the vacuum gauge facing to the setter. 3. Base unit is placed on a stable surface near water. If uneven, operator can adjust four rubber feet. 4. Tighten digital converter on the rack, then connect motor five core plug. 5. Slide main condenser clamp over stainless steel rack. Tighten knurled screw of clamp carefully. 6. Mount the vapor tube on the motor and use the PTFE-seal to tighten. 7. Connect the vice condenser with the vapor tube and sustain it with bracket. Using the PTFE-seal to tighten. 8. Connect the receiving flask with the vice condenser and sustain it with bracket. Mount the vacuum switching valve on the junction. 9. Insert the main condenser into the vice condenser and tighten the clamp. 10. Mount the inlet valve, outlet valve and discharge valve. 11. Insert the locking pin of the motor and mount the evaporating flask on the motor. Remove the locking pin after tightening the clamp. 12. Move the heating bath under the evaporating flask. Add water to 2/3 pot. Adjust the height of heating bath. 13. Using the vacuum pipe to connect the exhausting port to the joint

- 8 - above vacuum gauge. Connect another joint to the circulating water pump. 14. Mount the feeding tube and connect the device to the cooling water.

Notes

(1) Glassware should be cleaned before installation.

(2) The standard port and the sealing surface should be coated with a little vacuum grease to increase air tightness.

(3) Be sure that every parts are locked tightly before starting up .

(4) Be sure to remove the locking pin before starting up.

(5) Not to move the whole device.

Operation

The evaporation rate of the device depends on the following three points: 1. The higher vacuum degree, the faster the device evaporates. The vacuum degree should be not less than 0.096 Mpa.

- 9 - 2. The higher the heating bath temperature, the faster the speed. Generally not more than 80 ° C. Specific temperature according to the process requirements. 3. The lower the cooling water temperature, the faster the speed. Using coolant is much better.

I. Operation procedure

1. Vacuum: Do the following things if not reach the required vacuum degree after starting up the vacuum pump. Check the PTFE seal, tension ring, couplings to see whether they are sealed good. Check the vacuum pump to see how it works. The external vacuum tube connected to vacuum switch can adjust slightly to reach the best recovery rate and evaporation speed.

2. Feeding: Due to vacuum negative pressure, liquid material flow into the evaporating flask automatically through a hose. Do not feed more than half of its capacity. The device can achieve a continuous feed. When start feeding, operator should pay attention to:

(1) Turn off the vacuum pump.

- 10 - (2) Stop heating. (3) Open the feeding valve slowly when the device finish evaporating in case of back-flow.

3. Heating: The heating bath is equipped with advanced intelligent control panel. It is based on a computer chip as the main control unit. Using multiple digital filter circuit, interference automatic recovery, PID control and self-tuning function. It has advantages such as: high accuracy, stable and accurate temperature control, anti-interference ability, simple operation, etc. Evaporating flask is immersed by moving up and down via the heating bath lift.

You can fill the heating bath with various heating bath fluids: * Tap water (no deionized or distilled water) * Oil with low viscosity (40 cP) and flashpoint > 260°C.

Control panel

- 11 - Sign Introduction Sign Introduction Set SV Setting temperature SET R/S < Shift key OUT1 Output1 ∨ Reduce the OUT2 Output2 temperature ∧ Raising the ALM Alarm temperature PV Actual temperature AT Auto-turning

Using the auto-tuning function if the temperature error is large. The system will automatically calculate more suitable PID data for the - 12 - process and make temperature control more accurate and more stable.

Press “ < ” or “ ∨ ” key for about 5 seconds, then release. “AT” lights up, “SV” flashing, and the device turns to auto-tuning condition. When finished, “AT” lights off. (When starting auto-tuning, the device must be in the heating state and the PV must be lower than the SV. If the device shuts down during auto-tuning, the process will be invalid.)

Cut off the power when finish using the device.

4. Rotation: Turn on the switch of the digital converter and adjust the rotary button to achieve the most suitable speed. Pay Attention to avoid temperature fluctuations of heating bath.

5. Connected to the cooling water.

6. Solvent recovery: Open the outlet valve and let gas in. Open the discharge valve so that operator can collect the solvent.

II. Considerations

1. About the vacuum degree

- 13 - Vacuum degree is the most important technical data of rotary evaporator. However, operators often meet the problems with vacuum degree. That is often related to the nature of the medium solvent. Regularly people use water, ethanol, acetone, acetic acid, ethyl ether, petroleum ether, chloroform, and toluene as solvent in pharmaceutical and biochemical industries. General vacuum pump can not be resistant to strong organic solvent so you can choose special strong corrosion-resistant vacuum pumps. (Recommended the water circulating vacuum pump, our company also supply it.)

Simple way to test whether the device leaks: Pinch off external vacuum hose, then observe whether the vacuum gauge can hold for five minutes without pressure relief. If any leakage, operator should check the sealing joints and PTFE seals on the rotation shaft (See maintenance). If the device works properly, please check the vacuum pump and vacuum hose.

2. About the motor temperature The device uses a three-phase 220V dedicated motor with E-grade insulation. And the winding uses high strength polyester enameled wire.

Operation environment: Altitude less than 1000 meters and the ambient temperature below 40℃. Continuous operation will make the temperature of motor surface rise. It is safe for use because difference

- 14 - between the motor surface temperature and ambient temperature does not exceed 45℃ is normal. To check the lubrication system of transmission if temperature rise exceeds 45℃.

Maintenance

The housing and all surfaces of the unit allow for cleaning with a damp cloth and if required a mild soap lotion.

1. For glassware: If glassware has a lot of dirt, operator can use a little dilute sulfuric acid to wash it.

2. For PTFE seal: Never continue working with a damaged or a worn-off PTFE seal. Otherwise the unit can be damaged accordingly. Seals must be checked on a regular basis and must eventually be replaced.

3. For heating bath: Over a longer period time rust and deposition of solids may be observed. Rust can be removed easily with stainless steel polish. Lime deposits can be removed with standard cleaning agents based on acetic or citric acid. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions in both cases.
